Need good open-source character ideas for brawler
Need good open-source character ideas for brawler
I'm currently working on a super smash bros clone for blender, using open-source characters. Currently I have my two characters and a stage based upon Yo Frankie!, but I only know of blender characters I can use.
Are there any open-source mascots you would like to see?
Every character from ssb had its own symbol behind the damage counter, what would be tux's symbol?
Any good item ideas? (exploding acorns come to mind)
This game will be free and open-source (but I may take donations or create a field for advertisements).
Cool, this is the one of the few games types I miss in free software, hope something comes of it!
May as well toss out suggestions with art license details:
For a sword user with ranged attacks, perhaps >dink smallwood(art was zlib'd except for certian audio the author did not hold copyright to)
for dude(ette)s with guns and explosives the red eclipse(cc-by-[sa]) player characters or some from http://open
Then there is Sara from OGA. I'll see about contacting these people for permission, thanks.

Dunno why you'd need to ask permmision. In freedink's case as zlib is pretty permissive(and the freedink project only accepts free as in freedom cc-by-sa/GPL sound replacements if you use those) and as long as you're not going to try and DRM the red eclipse art, credit the artists and don't try to change or omit the license on artwork derived from cc-by-(sa) you'll be fine.
Other comment cut sort so reposting cut off link: For levels maybe a scavenger or player base warzone2100 style(GPL, possibly some CC stuff)
I might add that the red eclipse electrosword thing might be a good striking weapon pickup like the beam sword/home run bat from smash. The game also features a mine pickup.
How about Sinbad, the OGRE3D mascot?

Oh, tux icon idea: terminal. a square box with a "$ _" inside as a reference to the (false) perception to how you need to use the command line to setup linux
blender foundation characters could match the project codenames (peach, apricot, durian ect) you likely already planned that but throwing that out there
red eclipse icon: if one close to the logo can't be used(there's a trademark on that if I recall, should check with the red eclipse team on that one. reuse/deriving of ingame artwork and such is fine) then we use a pistol icon styled after the one from the most recent red eclipse versions.
dink smallwood: a sword or a pig(he starts the game feeding them)
Is tux going to an all around mario style fighter considering his role in supertux and super tux kart? I'd imagine maryo's human status would likely be be best if you're going for a character who's more or less a clone of the plumber while tux should have his penguin-ness factored into his movements as I can't really see him being a hand to hand fighter due to the whole not having any thing.
Maryo's icon would based on the cloth on his head
Yo. This is something I've worked on before (for the 2D Ultimate Smash Friends project, which I believe is no longer active). You can see the resources which were assembled here: http://opengameart.org/content/ultimate-smash-friends Most of those are original characters, though.
The major problem I came across is that so few open source games are character driven--the ones that even have characters tend to either use Tux (who really isn't a character IMO, just an icon) or do something like what the Maryo project did.
One which I came across was Surge from OpenSurge (an unfinished sonic clone, albeit one with promising demo builds). Another suggestion would be one or more characters from Wesnoth (ala Marth and Roy).
Well, ulitmate smash friends was made so it counts towards the potential roster of game characters.
Plus, since smash bros proper created captain falcon's entire moveset and by trasplanting it onto ganondorf changed him from a user of ranged magic, thrown pitchforks and the like into a hand to hand bruiser so I figure you have some wiggle room in regards to abilities with characters you do find. for example, you could take the schoolgirl(ayumi) the cheetahwoman(neko) and a robot(uhhh... robot?) from openarena(GPLv2) and make them all play differently. Also, plee the bear(CC-BY-SA) and alex the allegator(GPLv2+) from the games of the same name for some more characters to consider.
One more item suggestion would be a staff or rod in the style of flare(CC-BY-SA) as a battering weapon slash ranged magic weapon. You could have the different strengthed staffs with the better ones being rarer in drops/slower to chare/wear out faster ect
Just think of the stupidest Ides possible. like a Communist Positronic Robot who likes Nachos.
or a Pirate Lizard with a pet rock.
why would you do that. what does a pirate lizard with a pet rock have anything to do with real game mascots. the whole point of the game is to have real existing mascots of exisiting games not characters that makes no sense that no one can relate to.

I'm also going to have five special characters of my own, along with lolcat.
THe only problem I have with most of these characters (like Dink) is their resolution. Most are sprites that I need to recreate into 3d characters (not too hard). Actually, I need to remodel most, but Dink is so pixely, so some fanart would be good in that regard. (binging it now) I had not thought of giving a symbol to each blender character based upon their respective project, but I was going to share animations a bit to make things easier. The game will also have a setup for joypads (instead of splitting up the keyboard), and a keyboard-mouse setup if you want to play alone. Ai will also be implemented to make the game more interesting. I want to avoid the pitfalls found in ultimate smash friends.
