Could really use a platform like this in the open source world.

We already have such a mechanism, it's called "donations". But the moment you take money to improve your open source software, it turns into work, and that changes the relationship between user and developer completely.
donations however dont have any system of checks and balances, you can donate 1000 to someone for feature x but if they dont deliver then what?
For companies or even individuals who need something specific this could potentually be a great thing.
