Inspired by @william.thompsonj I am commissioning a variety of anime portrait art to pair with LPC characters. They are to be used for my RPG game maker for iOS, on iOS.
I have already posted some of the commissioned art here. I will be commissioning another 20 more pieces. Each portrait would have 4 or more expression.

As you are the target audience for my app, I would love to hear your ideas on what kind of anime portrait you would like to see.
Rules:
1) generate an LPC character using the LPC generator. Cut-n-paste just the front pose.
http://gaurav.munjal.us/Universal-LPC-Spritesheet-Character-Generator/
2) Give a description of some of the personality trait or history. This gives the artist more context to add details to the portrait. E.g. "Arrogant elven commander. Icy cold look but pretty. Had to work very hard to be in her position now."
Look forward to your suggestions! :)

Hi, this is my character:
Friendly bartender/shopkeeper
I'm a fan of your artworks. ;-)

I'm honored that I was your inspiration. These portraits are a great addition to the community, thank you so much. My suggestion, if I could be so bold, would be to make the original OGA characters starting with Sara the wizard (site mascot). You can find Trevor and the others on the last 2 pages of bart's submissions page (around page 92 I think).
Thanks all. I actually don't do much artwork now as I am concentrating on my game programming. The portraits are commissioned by me and done by Zeneria29. He's not a native speaker so I'll convey the thanks to him :)
@William, could you send me the link to the post?
ZaPaper,
I don't know any more about Sara's backstory other than "female spellcaster".
The original artwork by Mandi Paugh is here. The LPC interpretation (by Stephen Channeler ("Redshrike") and others is here). There is a concept art blowup by "p0ss" here.
HTML5 Canvas Old School RPG
Yeah, I don't know if there's an official back-story to any of the OGA characters either. I've looked and asked several people but nobody can point to a single specific story for any of them. I'm tempted to ask around if someone is willing to write some story for them but that's a discussion for another thread.
Other than Sara, are there other OGA characters?

Thank you Sharm. Sorry for the confusion and lack of links, I was on a business trip to Poland when I responded to this initially. It's hard to do much with my phone. I can't realistically copy and paste links because I'm just not that savvy or cool. The characters I was trying to point out are in the two links Sharm provided:
You might also find some interest in the NPC entry found here:
http://opengameart.org/content/fantasy-rpg-npcs
I realize all of these works look drastically different from the LPC style but these were the original inspiration for a lot of things here on OGA, thus why I tried to point them out. All of those characters and NPCs are over 5 years old and the LPC contest only took place 2 years ago so you might say some of it was a catalyst for our current state ;)
None of them have an official story (from what I can gather) so feel free to interpret as you see fit.
Thanks all. :)

Is it possible to change the color scheme of some of the characters? They are good artwork, but some of the colors may be more suited for a small color palette game (i.e. primary colors). This is good 5 years ago, but maybe platforms now can support a wider range of palette. Would make it more interesting.
Btw, more portraits included in the main link. Go check it out.

I gotta ask--is your username a Read or Die reference?
Yes, it is :) it's a relatively obscure anime. What's the source of your nick?
Sara Done.

Wow! That portrait is much better. Nice!
@ZaPaper: cool! I'm glad to meet someone else who enjoyed it. Too bad RoD:The TV wasn't quite up to the same level.
My nick, alas, has no good provenance. I came up with it in elementary school and it has momentum.
By the way, if portrait suggestions are still open, I'd like to put Baldric forward.
He's an entry I made during the contest itself, and since he's not layered he isn't in the generator, but he is fully sheeted here: http://opengameart.org/content/four-characters-my-lpc-entries
Baldric MacArie is an aging general who's not quite ready to stop leading from the front. He is a tactical genius but not gifted in strategy, and is chronically uncomfortable in the company of nobility. His ability to solve unexpected problems in the field has led to promotion beyond his comfort and to some extent his ability, and long periods of diplomatic and political work have taken their toll on him. Still, he has remained strong through the years and is still fiercly loyal to those in his command.
Sorry Luca, I didn't express myself well. I wanted to seek permission from the originators of the artwork to expand the range of colors for the characters. It would be an honor to stand of the shoulders of giants (i.e. original OGA pieces).
@Redshrike, Baldric would be in the next upload :)
I don't think there'd be any problems with recolors. You're making something based on the idea of another artwork, not using the artwork itself and even then you aren't directly copying anyone's design. The character IPs would be Bart's, not the artists, and I'm sure he'd be happy to see more done with those characters regardless of those sorts of changes.
Speaking of that, I'm making pixel portraits based my own concept of Sara and will possibly be doing my own take on Treavor, Star, Puck and Baldric. Could I have permission to add your artist's designs to my project without adding ZeNeRIA29 as a credit requirement? I would only be using the design, not the actual artwork. I've got my own designs I'm doing but it'd be cool to add ZeNeRIA29's as well.
I'm making a few other character concepts for this project and I'd like to share them with you so that you could have your artist make portraits too if you want. Do you just need me to make clothing for the LPC sprites for it to work? Would it have to be a full sheet or could it be a basic one?

@Sharm, I am using LPC only for the walking sequence (NSWE). If you could make more clothings for the LPC characters that would be great!
For example, I tried making a belly-dance and edied the monk outfit to a desert nomad:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/2s3zci7tzkqdbhi/sample.png
But it took time away my programming.
Ok with the attribution suggestion. Some back story would be good too.
Awesome!!! The sketch made me excited for the final draft of the portrait. Thanks. :D
I spend ages on this LPC female orc...would love to see a portrait for her.
I keep an eye on other games that use the LPC assets and I've noticed they tend to use the male Orc only :( I've yet to see a game with a playable (LPC) orc character.
(I also hope you're going to use some of the more dark-skinned characters from the LPC character generator)
Coming up with fantasy character background stories is not my thing...

Have started work on the Male ORC.

I would could commission work on some dark elves but want to hear some views first.
That orc looks awesome :)

@nemisys, Barkeeper done. He's friendly, middle-age and helpful. The other storekeeper is not so friendly:

Wow, thank you for uploading those very useful portraits. Thank you also to ZeNeRIA29 for making this artworks!
I love to see new portraits. These are awesome. By the way, if anyone has requests for new LPC animations you're welcome to drop a line on my discussion here:

Hello,
Sorry for taking so long to respond. I've been out of town.
This looks awesome! My only suggestion is that the mustache should maybe be just a bit lower.
But this is awesome! I am very excited to see how this looks.
Here you go, Baldric
@nemisys , could you send me the spritesheet for the barkeep? I could not replicate it on the unievrsal generator. tks!

That's awesome! I'm so glad that you came back and finished this piece. I still really like this character and it's really fun to see such a nice portrait for him.
@ZaPaper Barkeep spritesheet. It was custom made, that's why it is not on the universal generator.
Keep up the good work!!!
