Some General Questions ...
#1 :
At one time, if I remember correctly, Flare was to be a engine/game with a lot of ToEE's functionality. Was that true?
( Played the Flair v0.19 alpha_demo, no party, and no turn based capability. )
Or did "IP / Copyright / License" issues force changes?
#2 :
In reading comments in the forum, I saw something about "waiting on SDL2 bugfixes, for v1.0 release". Is that correct or did I misread?
#3 : ( please ignore if #2 was misread )
Bugfixes in SDL2, or Bugfixes for SDL2 in the Flair engine?
#4 :
GOG.com bought ( rights, license, source code, & data/material/media ) all of SSI's Classic / DOS based D&D computer games.
GOG.com seems to very supportive of "ports, mods, and engine replacements" for games they sell. ( See "Knights and Pesants" / Forum thread )
( Yes, EGA graphics fullscreen on a Wide LED 1600x900 Monitor looks horrible. )
I wonder if a "insert a single name of SSI's D&D games here" with a ( Flair engine / Flair game art ) would be a theoretical possiblity?
( NOTE : assumption! / Yes, this would require a $6 purchase of the original game for license purposes. )
Or would the "license issue" still create problems?
( I am used to BBS coding for forums, this new way may make a mess. Apologies for appearance! )
Flare has no relation to any turn-based, DnD-style games. It is its own game, but gameplay is influenced by hack-and-slash RPGs like the Diablo series.
The SDL2 bugfixes (which only affected Windows builds) you mentioned have been done in development versions of SDL2. We're waiting for the next stable release before moving Flare to 1.0.
Thank you for that information.
I did own and play the original Diablo series, in the past.
Never bought or played Diablo II, no interest.
Do not have any idea what version of Diablo is currently selling retail now either.
IMO ....
Diablo sytle games will not be popular with the isometric dungeon delvers party types.
They will prefer the styles of ToEE & the Baldur's Gate series for example.
Good Luck!
I just wonder to which "they" you refer to. Personally I'm more than happy that I've found a FOSS game that reminds me of Diablo II (this is the one I own) without being a simple clone. For the record, Diablo III is the latest installment still in stores. A FOSS Baldur's Gate-like game maybe with Pathfinder rules would be awesome though I guess it would be quite a big project to bring on.
Definition of "they" ...
People who prefer turn based actions, parties ( more than one character ), and having time to think and plan ( strategy & tactics ) instead of a "Real Time" system ( how fast can you click the left mouse button. )
Yes, it would be a major project. I suspect it would require a major fork of the code base, or starting from scratch. Something to think about ( for me ).
