There are numerous games out there with freely-licensed art assets. The challenge is finding them! This thread is a sort of to-do list of games with free/libre content that we can scour and upload to OGA.
- Nexuiz/Xonotic (FPS) - everything is GPL, source/usable files included in the repo http://svn.icculus.org/nexuiz/tags/nexuiz-2.5.1/misc/mediasource/
- Glest (RTS) - CC-By compatible (requires credit to the Glest team and link to glest.org), non-animated models can be imported into blender losslessly
- Megaglest (RTS) - CC-By-SA, same as for Glest, lots of good 3D tilesets, a few decent characters
- Battle for Wesnoth (TBS) - GPL, lots of awesome sprites and 2D tilesets, icons
I'll probably work on getting the Glest/Megaglest tilesets sometime in the near future. In the mean time, feel free to grab some assets from these games, and/or do some research finding other games that we can use.
Edit: It's been requested that we wait until Xonotic 1.0 is released before using their assets.

However, I think the general rule is to not reupload assets, otherwise we'd be doing it the whole day and peeing off foss game devs :P
Well, at least not random chunks of assets. If they could be gathered in such a way as to be generally useful to a variety of projects that would be good.
Contact: Tactical Squad RTS as reported on Free Gamer has some nice models which are BY-SA according to their (otherwise empty) project homepage - a release can be found here.
The zipfile contains a "zipfile" called Contactb002.sd7 - models are in native Spring-RTS s3o format - research shows that there is a blender import/export plugin. Converting and uploading some of the models to say .obj and .blender would be nice. I think they may be useful for some projects, among others they've got weapons (G36 par example), (space-)marines, a Tank, a Spaceship - but that's just what I've seen from screenshots.
In general the Spring community has a lot and a wide range of nice assets as it seems (some of them proprietary IP though).

Don't tell anyone, but I regularly "borrow" assets from OpenArena for various projects.
A while ago, I made a ragdoll simulation in which I launched Angelyss into space.

Uhmm, the OA blend files are up in their SVN as far as I know.

you'll find them in sources/assets. I am also aware of how terribly unorganised the SVN is.
p.s. i'd like to see angelyss launched into space too. bonus points if it's angelyss/dark because that's the best character player model ever made under the GPLv2 license period

also, UFO:AI is another game to avoid ripping for the time being. Considering its history of inheriting modified q3 assets from Afterwards (and further made worse with nicked Deus Ex assets and Halo guns later on) it's a red flag all around even worse with the impression of trolling for spotting non-Free stuff.
man, i'm tired of auditing games when i play them, but I only get this offensive shock when I play a game that proclaims that it's 100% Free Software with such crap getting past the radar. Or even 67% Free Software like Sauerbraten, one contributor pulled lots of sounds from Quake4 and submitted them claiming from scratch lol, even denying it all. it's been since pulled because aardappel had the same fishy instinct about it
leilei: Any issue with Xonotic? Didn't it redo its media from the ground up? Also, good to see you participating in other communities again :P
After getting burned for the last time I brought up the issue of non-Free stuff lurking about, I don't even acknowledge Xonotic's existence (especially when you consider the whole motivation of the fork it's even more hypocritical). Whatever; ignorance is bliss. I'm done being a vigilante.
