How do you think an open source Fakemon project could work?

Hi folks,

I've been working on Tuxemon for about six months. It's an open source monster battling game.

Tuxemon has revived my interest in Pokemon, and particularly "fakemon", which is where people make their own Pokemon-like monsters. Some of the monsters we're using in Tuxemon were originally designed as fakemon.

I am struck by the enormous productivity of the fakemon community: there are literally tens of thousands of fakemon that have been created, including many that are of excellent quality. Often, fakemon designers are very happy to share their work, but it's rarely via the Creative Commons licences: it's usually more ad hoc and informal.

So one thing that has been turning over in my head is whether we could reach out to fakemon creators and encourage them to use free and open licences. How could we draw them in? What value could we add to encourage them to participate? What would be a good way to describe the concept, to appeal to their interests and values?

Any thoughts?
