if I was a Windows user I’d probably be thinking 'why not just reinstall Diablo?'"
Great question -- once that I don't have a good answer for. It's a fool's quest to try to beat or match Blizzard, even the Blizzard of 15 years ago!
Not at all. Not a fool's quest.
Blizzard doesn't make the best games - at least not in every category. There's a great game which superficially resembles Diablo, but is actually quite different (especially in multiplayer). It's like Diablo made by resourceful and inventive people. It had the misfortune to be released a few months before Diablo2, so most people skipped it. Then EA pulled the plug, EA was never known for long-time support of their games. They only released one or two patches for the game.
I'm talking about Nox.
Nox plays quite different from Diablo. While Diablo is collectible-action-rpg game, Nox is pretty much straight action game. No randomness (I don't think it's a good thing about it), and in multiplayer everyone starts at the same level and stays there. Actually multiplayer modes have much more in common with Quake, with modes like Capture The Flag, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch.
What does it have to do with FLARE ? Well, trying to make another Diablo is pretty much pointless, yes, unless you enjoy it. But I would try to resurrect Nox* and add my own ideas to it. In fact, if FLARE had a decent scripting language, I would start the project. Nox never got the attention it deserved. The game is teeming with original ideas.
* with name change, different world etc, no blatant ripoff.
Another answer to that question - the colors will bug out on Windows Vista and 7. Diablo is already technically obsolete for that matter in that it only supports 8-bit color.
;)
1. Diablo 1 has copy protecton that ***s up your cd/dvd drive.
2. Sure, it has been hacked, but the hacked up versions can't compare with what you can do with fully editable freesoftware.
3. Diablo 1 artwork always looked awful.
I think you're going too far describing the artwork - which parts were awful ? I think Diablo3 artwork looks awful.
Anyway, Diablo had some very stupid design decisions. For example there are early enemies which can permanently damage your HP. There's selling to shops, item identification. And Butcher is just frustrating unless you're a warrior, and even then he may be too tough. The only reliable way of killing him relies on what I would classify as a bug (a monster who can wield tools, axes, can't open doors).
I just found about this project, nevertheless I would personally love to see something along the lines of Nethack/SSDC meets Diablo... AKA a (well done) Graphical Realtime Roguelike. When I say well done I mean including all the complexity, choice and freedom a RL has.
Just a thought. :)

I hate to revive a more than year old thread, but I'd like to add that Divine Divinity (terrible name) is far superior to Diablo in many ways, but was often overlooked because of the similarity in visual style.
I think the term "Diablo clone" is a misnomer, because it implies that Diablo was the first of that kind of crpg game, when many of the games that are dubbed "Diablo Clones" are, imo, much more similar to the Ultima series of games. I could be wrong, but that's my 2 cents.
Divine Divinity is amazing! I love the atmosphere (gameplay is great too). It has an outstanding soundtrack which can be downloaded for free from the composer's website: http://www.kirillpokrovsky.com/
Yes, i also like the character creation system they use, stats plus dozens of perks you can adquire and upgrade with skill points, you pick the ones you want, a bit similar to elder scrolls
