Arenas of Magic – HTML5 MMO – Resource Request

UPDATE:

I'm running a crowdfunding campaign to try and raise some money to get art asset work done for this game. All art assets produced for the game will be released back here on OGA with a CC BY 4.0 license for others to use. Check it out at https://click.hubbub.net/p/arenasofmagic/

"Why not use Kickstarter/IndieGoGo/[insert crowdfunding platform here]?": I'm not trying to raise a huge amount, and my university has a programme where I can get some of the amount match funded, as well as support and access to resources from the university itself.

Who are you, and what do you want?

Greetings!

I’m Johnathan. Maker of games. I’ve been loitering around these parts for a couple of years now, and have for the last few months I’ve been bringing to life a game idea that I’ve been toying with for a while.

"Fetch your staffs and spell books, for there is wizardry to be done…

Fight with and against other players in a battle of wits and wands in this top-down 2D, real-time, team based MOBA of sorts. Spells from seven distinct elements, each with their own unique play style and counter-elements to learn and master are at your disposal for defeating foes and aiding allies across charming pixel art environments."

The game is running on the Phaser game framework (HTML5) and is currently in a playable state, with account creation & login, spell management & unlocking, player movement, collision handling, smooth networking, a few projectile spells, and a basic map all implemented and working across desktop, tablet and smartphone, with console support planned.

Good progress is being made, though it is a bit rough around the edges, and am looking for some collaborators to help in the following areas:

  • Sound effects: Short, snappy audio feedback for common game events (death, damage taken, healed, victory, etc.), and spell casts. Many spells can share the same sound effect. The main constraint will be file sizes. Audio can get easily get quite big. I was thinking MIDI. There is probably a lot of stuff on OGA that would be suitable that I’m not aware of, but you know how useful the search feature is. :/
Update: Found this. https://opengameart.org/content/50-midi-tunes A lot of the tracks seem to fit quite well with the theme of the game. Sadly browsers don't support MIDI playback, so any MIDI files will need to be rendered out to actual audio files.
  • Map design: There is currently only one map, that I put together quickly for testing. The design of the maps (split into zones) are a huge part of the gameplay, so some well planned, balanced and good looking game spaces are needed, that provide opportunities for each element to be used as intended.

And of course, any kind of testing/feedback would be welcome.

I plan on commercialising the game at some point, and would love to compensate those who help the project get to that state, but can’t do anything at the moment in terms of financial incentive.
