I thought I'd post this here, since this subforum doesn't see much in the way of use. It's an idea for a cyberpunk game, which people can feel free to use. Credit is appreciated, but not requried. :)
It's actually a cymberpunk zombie story. It starts with the invention of inject-able nanobots, which take the place of bulkier and more invasive cybernetic implants. These nanobots fuse with the central nervous system and make people smarter and faster, with better reaction time, etc. They also allow you to connect to a worldwide network from anywhere you can get a signal, without the use of any special equipment (imagine the Matrix, except without the need to plug in).
Here's the zombie part: At some point, someone created self replicating nanobots that essentially shut down all the victim's higher brain functions and turn themviolent and feral. These nanobots are transmitted from person to person via bodily fluids, generally from saliva to blood (that is, when a zombie bites an uninfected person). The catch about these zombies is that, while they're dumb individually, they have instant wireless communication with all of the other zombies in the area, so in groups of a thousand or so, they have human-level intelligence, but with interconnected senses and a singular purpose.
Possible places the plot could go:
- During the initial invasion, the protagonists are attempting to find "patient zero" so they can get a clue as to how and why the zombie nanobots were created, and hopefully come up with a way to stop them.
- Hackers discover that the zombie nanobots were invented by the military industrial complex, with the intent of using them for mind control on a massive scale, but they leaked out before they were supposed to. The inventors know how to shut them down, but releasing the information would be an admission of guilt, and they don't want to pay for the cleanup.
- Later on in the apocalypse, it could just be a zombie survival game with a cymberpunk component. The zombies, when together, are smart enough to maintain uniquitous wireless internet, which they use for their own intercommunication, hence the ubiquitous computer network would still be around to provide the possibility of cymberpunk-ish activities in the game world.
- The "your mind makes it real" trope (TVTropes link -- you have been warned) could actually be explained plausibly here, if the zombie behavior is caused by a computer virus that infects nanobots. People without the self-replicating kind of nanobots wouldn't be able to transmit them via bodily fluids, but they would be able to contract the virus online. Perhaps getting "killed" online by the zombie hivemind causes your nanobots to contract the virus.
Thoughts? :)
Interesting, could be used with the cyberpunk spriteset, also as zombies would be computer controled, some nasty AI could start adding cybernetic implants of all kinds making them real abominations. And maybe your target priority would be to shut down the networks hubs to handicap them.
That's a cool idea. One thing I'd been considering as a way to counter them would be an electromagnetic pulse, but the problem with that would be that it could kill anyone with normal cybernetics too, so it would only be usable on a completely infested area (and only if there's no possibility of a cure).
The most logical zombie idea I have ever heard. To add to the idea pool:
There can be hacking abilities which will temporarily disable zomnots (zombie + nano + bot) or make the work for you. Or better yet disable an entire hive for a short time. EMP does not need to kill, just disable all bots. This will probably drive the infected humans mad. Also any implant based skills will not be usable.
I suppose it depends on the strength of the EMP. One would think that if the pulse is strong enough to fry electronics (as opposed to just cause them to reset or something), then if those elctronics were embedded into someone's central nervous system, it would do fatal damage to their living tissue. I suppose if the pulse were mild enough, it would have a temporary stunning effect, perhaps preventable by turning your own nanobots off temporarily.
Why go as drastic as EMP? If they're communicating over wifi, you could just introduce some interference. Run a microwave or plug in a Belkin, and suddenly the zombies are all dumb as rocks. Carrying a device which spams EM noise to screw with their communication means that a single zombie noticing you doesn't summon the Horde, making it easier to deal with them one-on-one. There are a lot of fun things you could do with a premise like that, and the whole Hive Mind notion also gives a neat explanation for the 'No Zombie Cannibals' thing..
