It might be better if the shield strength is depending also on mental damage. It's just logical that the better the wand is, the stronger is the shield. And it would be a good use for the secondary weapon (which could be a wand which amplifies the shield).
The secondary gear is a nice feature but I'm a bit frustrated as there seems to be no use for it.  I planned to play brutes / archers which use a wand as second weapon for a stronger shield, but the wand is useless for the shield.  I also tried a hybrid of archer / brute, but all enemies are already dead before they make it into the melee ; )
