It's official: The Fall All-OGA Game Jam! 2018 starts October 1.
You can start prepping beforehand if you like, full details here:
https://itch.io/jam/fall-all-oga-game-jam-2018
The idea of this Jam is challenge ourselves to use only OGA available assets, so let's see what we can do to show off all the wonderful artwork on OpenGameArt.org!
There is an optional theme:
*** Completing the Set ***
So anyone in need of inspiration can dwell on that, or just start spelunking through OGA works until something strikes a chord!
Hi !
I want to join but my english is a very basic and i don't understand the theme "Completing the set" that means you must use all resources from that asset ?
Eyh ! I just join OGA Jam and I'm thinking something good.
@Lt Khorne: Glad you are joining the jam and welcome to OpenGameArt! :)
> we can take images with a public domain license (ex. wikimedia commons , pixabay) and use as base to make scenes , backgrounds , etc... Those edits are suitable to upload here ?
Yes this is ok, as long as the license for the original work allows it.
Pixbay says all of it's images are CC0 which is basically public domain so those images should be fine.
Wikimedia commons images are shared under many different licenses, so be sure to check that the image you are using allows you to distribute derivatives under an OGA supported license. Generally, anything using a Creative Commons license should be ok. Feel free to ask if you have questions about a specific image.
Also, remember the rules of the Fall All OGA Jam require you to give credit to the original artist (including a link to their work) even if the license for the work doesn't require it.
So for the Jam you will need to credit the original author(s) for CC0 images on Pixbay and Wikimedia commons, even though CC0 license doesn't require you to credit anyone.
> "Completing the set" that means you must use all resources from that asset ?
No not at all. The theme is just meant as an abstract idea. You may interpret it however you like.
For example, an RPG where you must collect all eight pieces of the Octo-Force could be considered 'Completing the Set'.
Alternately, a card game where you must collect all the cards of a particular type or suite could be considered a game about 'Completing the Set'.
Or a construction game where you must build the stage for a play or movie which would literally be 'Completing the Set'
Really anything you can think of that fits the words 'Completing the Set' will work.
Also, the theme is entirely optional. You don't have to follow the theme at all if you don't want to. You could even doing something that is the exact opposite of the theme, such as a game where you must hide all eight pieces of the Octo-Force or something like that.
Hope that helps! Feel free to ask more questions if you have them.
> Eyh ! I just join OGA Jam and I'm thinking something good.
Awesome! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with! :)
@withthelove, about the politics thing, the plot I had in mind deals with religious factions fighting about whether humanity should obey or disobey the gods.
I type so lazy now, sorry about it
the game is just an age of war clone, not much dialogue or anything.
> Yes this is ok, as long as the license for the original work allows it.

Thanks for clarify me that ! yeah im saving a excel sheet with all the info and assets I'm using . This is my first jam and I don't want to do something bad or wrong :P
> No not at all. The theme is just meant as an abstract idea. You may interpret it however you like.

Ahhhh I understand now. This also gives me a nice idea for the purpose of my game. Thanks also for those examples :)
>Awesome! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with! :)
Thanks for this awesome welcome :D
Btw I have a last question regarding the Engine. I can use for example Unity and a Free assets with shaders , etc... ? My plan is really use pixel art for all the project with art and music from there plus a bit edits . But I'm talking about light effects , etc... Are those allowed ? At last must be commented and credited if are allowed ?
For put a real example , this is allowed ?
https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/vfx/shaders/uber-shader-for-sprites-88191
Is released under MIT License
I appreciate your time for answering me , Thank you.
(sorry for grammar mistakes , this box don't have spellcheck)
Eyh ! I just join OGA Jam and I'm thinking something good.
> yeah im saving a excel sheet with all the info and assets I'm using
Good idea! The idea is to help get us all in the habit of giving proper credit for things. Sounds like are on the right track. :)
> I can use for example Unity and a Free assets with shaders , etc... ? My plan is really use pixel art for all the project with art and music from there plus a bit edits . But I'm talking about light effects , etc... Are those allowed ? At last must be commented and credited if are allowed ?
Yes these are fine to use.
No you don't have to give credit for them. You only need to provide credit for the art, music, sounds, etc. from OpenGameArt.org that you use.
Still, it might be nice to mention that you used that software and give the author a 'Special Thanks' or something. But it is not required.
btw, thanks for providing the example. That helped to me to understand exactly what you were asking about.
> (sorry for grammar mistakes , this box don't have spellcheck)
No worries. I've also noticed that the OGA entry boxes don't have spell check. :)
@Spring-Enterprises: yeah sounds like you should be fine.
@withthelove yeah probably.
So, I've started working on OH GULLY prematurely for some reason, therefore I won't submit 2 games to the jam like I once said, just one ^v^
shit, I've absolutely no quality ideas for this...
I really want to take part in it though :p
Getting close now! not long to go. :)
@Spring sure you will come up with something
@withthelove are you excited? its cool running a jam.(all being well)

regarding rule 2, so we have to post absolutely EVERY asset that we use? all 3d models? all animation rigs? all fonts?
i have one or two things i would like to remain private. One of them, for instance, is an animation rig for a tornado effect which would spawn particles and etc... if i dont post that here, i am disqualified?
i can adjust my plans if we have to post EVERYTHING, but i just want to clarify.
thanks!
@Spring: What about 'By Gully!' or 'Gully Gosh!'?
@chasersgaming: Definitely excited, got a good idea for my own effort and can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with!
@MNDV.ecb: Well, the goal is for the entries to be 'All-OGA'. The idea is two fold, one to show off OGA assets and two to encourage good sharing habits. So at the risk of being absolutist, I'm going to say, yes EVERYTHING should be available on OGA by the Oct. 31 deadline.
That said, there is an exception for logos and title music, so already I have acknowledged that there are somethings that are ok to stay private. If you can give me a very compelling reason for keeping something private, I'd at least being willing to listen. About the animation rig, why would you want to keep that private? Is it in an odd format, or is it something you don't think others would find useful?
@withthelove heh, I'm not lacking ideas for titles, but what should it actually be about :P
@withthelove i don't think anyone would ever use the rig, yeah. So long as i know that organizers are open to privacy in one or two items in case i come up with something i don't want to share (or can't... like i make an aircraft that too closely resembles a protected design or something) that's good enough for me.
all-oga is a good goal though, don't get me wrong! if i participate i will be posting everything i can.
@MNDV.ecb: I think you misundersood me. The requirement is for everything to be OGA. I said I am willing to listen if you can present a compelling case for using something private, I didn't make any promises that an exception would be granted.
Speaking directly to the two cases you've given:
> i don't think anyone would ever use the rig
I would not accept this as a compelling reason as is. Perhaps no one would ever find the rig useful, but perhaps some one would, it's impossible to really say for sure. Even if the rig wasn't of direct practical use for others, it might be of good instructional use.
If there's a specific reason the rig wouldn't be useful, I'd be willing to hear it. But on it's face, I don't see 'not useful to others' as a compelling reason to grant an exception.
> like i make an aircraft that too closely resembles a protected design or something
I definitely wouldn't accept this as a compelling reason to grant an exception. Ask yourself, if it's too close to a protected design to be distributed it on OGA, why would it be ok to distribute with your game in the first place?
Granting an exception on these grounds would open the door to all sorts of malfeasance (fan-art, trademarked characters, ripped sprites etc).
So to re-iterate: the requirement is for all art used in the game to available on OGA by the Oct. 31st deadline. There is a blanket exception for 'logos, title screens and title music or sound effects related to a logo or game title'. I am willing to acknowledge that there may exist other cases worthy of an exception to this requirement, although I can think of none at this time. I am willing to listen if someone wants to make a case for an exception to the requirement, however listening is all I can promise, I do not promise that an exception will be made no matter how strong or righteous the argument for it.
Finally, if you know you are planning to use some assets that you are either unwilling or unable to share on OGA, please ask about an exception for them NOW. Do not wait. You can ask publicly here, or PM if you want to keep the discussion private.
Do not assume that I will grant you an exception to what is the central rule of the entire jam.
And do not put me in the position of having to reject your entry after you've put a month of hard work into it on an , because I will do it, if nothing else, out of fairness to other participants who have been more diligent about following the rules.
Additionally, if you really can think of another legitimate reason to allow the use of private assets, let's air it out as quickly as possible so I can get the rules updated and allow everyone to benefit from the exception.
@Spring-Enterprises: I like the idea that in the sequel to 'Oh Gully' you play as the seagull and your mission is to steal ice cream for the hapless humans who are invading your beach with their noisy commotions and smelly sun tan lotion.
@withthelove i appreciate your thorough reply, and i agree those are not good reasons. i would include such assets.
for the jam, i was planning on making a sort of dry-run version of the larger game im working on, based on the concepts with totally fresh code and new assets... but if i make something i really like and want that to be one of a kind in the major project, i would not want to release it.
but what i think i'll do is just keep those assets out of the game-jam game and make new, open, models for the jam, then post em here.
i guess i really do have to participate now that ive caused all this trouble!
@MNDV.ecb: Thanks for being understanding. I too have been in the position of wondering 'do I share this with the community or keep it private so my project stays special?', so I certainly appreciate where you're coming from. Glad you have a solution in mind that works for you and for the jam. And don't worry, it's no problem at all to answer questions like these, like I said, just glad you are asking now and not on Oct. 31! :)
Hey!
Iv'e been a member of OGA for a few years now but I'm only now begining to become active here. I would like to participate in the jam, can anyone enter?
@ohannes-nienaber-videogame-development: absolutely, the jam is open to anyone! You do need an itch.io account to submit your entry but those are free.
@withthelove I guess I will stick with the OH GULLY idea :D
START THIS ALREADY ;D
SOON!
Hi All, I just wanted to introduce myself before the Game Jam starts, I've pretty much loved OGA since I found it, but I never signed up or checked it often enough to catch one of the Game Jams here.
UNTIL NOW.
Needless to say I'm super psyched!
The "All-OGA" restriction is a great idea, and it's really got the cogs turning, so I'm excited to see what everyone else (and myself :P) makes!
IT'S ON!!!!
Hey, so, I was considering this but I have a few questions. I've been remaking the psychopomp in UE4, and in doing so I rebuilt the engine from source (which you have to do if you want source code access). I made new features, scrapped about 3 gigs of pre-coded features, so most of the work has been on the engine itself so far.
However, if I were to participate, I'd be using stock features, classes, nodes etc that I didn't get rid of (yet) but I'd like to not download the engine again, as it comes stock because that's like... another 20 gigs. I'd be doing it all in blueprints (The psychopomp uses strictly c++) and to show I'm not using anything I made for the psychopomp, I'd make something that isn't a platformer (I was thinking of using mindchamber's red baron and doing a beat 'em up). I'd also be willing to release the source code (blueprints, not engine code) too, which would be compatible with the stock engine.
Would that be okay to do?
@WeRideForCoffee: Yay! Glad the jam inspired you to formally join the OGA community! Welcome aboard!
@VinnNo.0: Yeah that sounds fine to me. As long the final game meets the Jam requirements, I don't see any reason why not. You do make me nervous with those 3 and 20gig numbers, but I assume that's just source side stuff, the final game wouldn't be a 20gig download would it? I mean, it'd be fine if it was, that just seems like ALOT of data for anything made in a month. Although, I guess I do know how you like those super smooth animations ;)
Oh, lawdy, no! Haha The engine is a little over 20 gigs. The packaged game, and this is just a roundabout guesstimate, will probably be around 300ish mb.
Thanks for clearing that up!
I can still participate?
and i can modify some assets from oga to meet the engine requirements , for example to fix trim from spritesheets to fit for animation or erase the background color?
@machalord yes you can still participate!, plenty of time in the jam. Just check the assets you are planning on using, but yes you can modify assets to your needs. Recolouring and removal of backgrounds and ups caling/downscale won't require you to reshare, but if you make derivatives from the work You must credit the original author, and ALL assets used the in game must be available here at OGA, so any assets you create for your game should be available here too, or made available before the jam ends, October 31st. :)

@chasersgaming: Thanks for the assist. Looks like I picked the wrong month to run and participate in a game jam plus finish up work on the Game of the Jam Edition of Yulpers. I did have a plan for pulling it all off, but real life has been a swirl for the last week and a half and I'm only just now getting back to my keyboard. But hey, I guess it just means crunch time start early for me on this jam! ;)
It's gonna be tough for me to make it in time this time around. Guess I will have to submit an unfinished game again...
@Spring-Enterprises: Oh no! Love your concept, definitley excited to whatever you have ready by the deadline.
Very sad to say but I am facing a similar situation on my end. I only just got to putting any work into my project yesterday and it wasn't much. As much as it pains me to admit it, I don't think I'm going to be able to participate in the jam. I have a back up game concept that would require a lot less time, but I don't even know if that's realistic at this point.
@withthelove awww :p what's a jam, without the love??
well, when you put it that way.... :)
After sleeping on it, I have some time today, I'm going to work on my simplified concept and see how far I can get. If I can make enough progress today maybe, just maybe I'll be able drag something across the finish line. It'll be made with the love if not the time. ;)
You know what, I'm struggling too. I've had nothing but constant errors all week and it's beginning to take its toll. I set me self a nice daily plan out but I completely forgot my kids are all off next week for half term so it pretty much leaves me with no flexibility. My head has been up my arse all week. I'm just going to have to have the one level and remove everything else if I'm to have a remote chance of 'dragging something across the line'. It's disappointing, but sometimes you just have to roll with the punches.:)
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
yeah, i was super amped, too, but then my boss comes in last week and hands me a stack of TPS reports up to the ceiling. Sux. I will still try to get a simplified submission in, because the jams are awesome and i wanna keep up the participation!
Yknow, simple games can win too!
(says the person making an overly complex piece of shit) XD
Oh, cool. Everyone's late! Haha! I just started stuff today, with a disaster of a prototype and some rushed art. It'll be absolutely probably okay or not!
Well, I haven't gotten as far as I was dreaming today and yesterday, but I think I've crossed both the 'this could actually be fun' and 'this could actually be done' lines. Here's hoping the rest of you have as much luck!
You can do it! Just throw away your real life for the next 10 days, who cares about that anyway!
kinda have been slacking/it seems like SAD is a more popular game of mine than Haydenwoffle, so yeah I've been working on that instead.... sorry to let you down...
I wanted the jam to be good, but my game idea really wasn't top quality :p
@Spring-Enterprises:
no worries, you gotta keep the people happy right! :)
My project's actually coming along, hoping to post some WIP shots shortly.
I'll be using some of your tunes for the music so you've contributed to the jam no matter what becomes of Haydenwoffle. :)
@withthelove
I can always submit unfinished protoype Haydenwoffle?
also, glad the songs found some use!
Haydenwoffle released, in a completely unfinished prototype stage!

Hey everybody, new guy here. Was gonna post in the intruductions forum but I couldn't find it. So here's as good a place as any for intro's, since I joined the site for this game jam. Just started game development a few months ago and really digging all the nice assets here.
Here's my first game and entry to the Jam.
WARPLANETS
WARPLANETS Planet Battle
Games not close to being finished. Not happy with the choppiness of the game play especially in space. I'm working on refactoring. The Linux versions also way smoother. I ran out of highspeed bandwidth this month though so I have to wait till the first to upload that.
Welcome to OGA! @MAG WEB DESIGNS!
I'll try your game now!
lol what's up with all the chuck norris references, I'm pretty sure that isn't an OGA asset XD
love the INGSOC reference tho :3
