Hope this is ok, I'll take this down if not ok with Bart. I think small contests are easier and more fun to enter/run. If this goes well I'll run a bit bigger one in Oct for hopefully better prize money. I'll start doing contests every month if enough interest/entries.
Prize:
The winner gets $25. I'll also donate $25 to opengameart.org. [UPDATE] Bart will also throw in $25 to the winner, making the grand total $50 to the winner.
Art:
What I'm looking for: GUI Widgets for RPG game. The more complete the better, should include buttons, windows, text area, scroll bars, etc. Something like GUI items in Diablo or Dragon Age. Prefer a BSD compatible license, but any acceptable opengameart license will be excepted for entry.
Rules
1. Runs till OCT 1.
2. To enter, submit to openart and then put your link here.
3. Obviously *all* resources must have licenses accepted at opengameart.org (bsd, gpl, cc, public domain, etc).
4. Work doesn't have to be original, just has to be under free license (see #3). Credit to orignal author is suggested (even if not dictated by license terms).
5. You can submit as many entries as you want, the more free art posted on this site the better!
6. If same art submitted more than once, will take who ever posted it first.
7. If contest is canceled, no entries, disputes, etc - I'll donate full $50 to opengameart.org
8. Payment is via paypal or personal check and paid in United States Dollars. I'll try my best, but no guarantees that I can send money overseas to your local currency.
Juding
I'll be judging the contest with Bart retaining veto powers :)
Criteria (in no particular order):
- Completeness: the more elements of a GUI it contains the better (scroll bars, windows, buttons, text areas, etc)
- Style: Having the same style throughout the art is important.
- Resolution: Higher resolutions are suggested. It's easy to downscale something, up scaling is harder. (Pixel art is an expection to this criteria).
- Look/Feel: This is subjective, but a nice look/feel is going to rank higher.
- Clear License: please make sure all appropriate copyright and license information is posted. We can't declare something a winner if it was a questionable or fuzzy license/copyright on it.
- Original Sources: if modified, including the original sources would also be helpful in case someone else wishes to modify it also.
Updates:
-$25 send to open art via paypal: Confirmation Number: 1KR22058W91990717 Placed on Sep 16, 2010
-Judging Criteria added
- Bart also throwing in $25 making the total $50 for the winner!
Okay, this works for me. Since you put the prize money forward, I'm going to match it. The pot stands at $50.
Since we're doing this for a cash prize, we need to make an up-front decision about who is going to be judging. Obviously, contest judges can't be eligible to win. :)
If you'd like to judge it yourself, that's fine. Just state in advance what criteria you'll be judging on and the scale you'll be using. :)
Peace,
Bart
End is 1. Sept., this is long time ago already. I overlooked this contest, but my graphics artist might really be interested in this, he designed a nearly-complete GUI for the game we work at (medieval fantasy RTS), I have to ask him if he would like to enter the contest, if it's not over yet anyways.
Ah, didn't notice that. Maybe he meant October or November 1?
Sorry, yes. OCT 1st! Updated post.
Cool, I asked the artist and yep, we're in then! I will post the result at the end of the month. Our gui is relatively complete: multiple kinds of buttons, scrollbars, editboxes, checkboxes, radiobuttons, listboxes, comboboxes, etc etc. We want to finish the tooltips and maybe polish it a bit.
He said in case we win, we will use all the money to pay our server costs :)
Hello, here's my entry:
http://opengameart.org/content/rpg-gui-construction-kit-v10
Hey folks,
I feel like maybe we didn't announce this with enough time (and in my rush to deal with various life craziness, I neglected to put it up on the front page). If possible, I'd like to run this contest again, with the due date set as December 1. I'd be happy to put up all of the funds for it this time around. Does that suit everyone okay?
Notet: I'm not suggesting that we move the due date back for the current contest -- just that we run it again and advertise it more publicly so we get a larger volume of entries. :)
Bart
It is 0:44 at my place, I will go to sleep and upload our entry correctly tomorrow (still the 01.10 then :)). It's still missing tooltips, so we would have something to add in case you re-run the contest. But wait a few hours for our entry please :)
I'd feel disapointed if the contest were re-run. I spent some time and effort in creating my entry I probably wouldn't otherwise. Hah I guess I was hoping for some easy money with so little competition, but let's wait for Pompei2's entry. I won't mind if don't get the prize due to someone submitting a better entry, but it would be rather bleh if the contest was simply canceled.
That's not what I'm getting at at all. What I'm proposing is that we end this contest, award you the prize money, and then run it again with more advertising. If I commit to a contest, I see it through regardless of the number of entries -- if I didn't, people wouldn't have any reason to have faith in our contests, and nobody would enter. :)
Sorry for being late, but at my place it's still 1. October :) Here is my entry. The graphics are drawn by moOshiE, our 2D artist, not by me, I only made the CEGUI files! Enjoy!

This is not an official entry, but I had it lying around and I though I'd upload it for fun:
I"ll post winner info in a bit, still writing it up.
In terms of having another contest we could make it a general "Game GUI" contest to get more entries? Space shooters, action games, etc. Not just RPGs. That might get more entiries also?
That's a good thought.
Entries received:
RPG GUI construction kit v1.0 : http://opengameart.org/content/rpg-gui-construction-kit-v10
Arkana-FTS GUI : http://opengameart.org/content/arkana-fts-gui
Additional:
http://opengameart.org/content/rpg-gui-block-element
- Completeness:
Both entries are feature rich.
Arkana-FTS GUI: has in addition a drop down box and progress bar.
RPG GUI construction kit v1.0: A drop down box could be created from components
- Style:
Again, hard to say a clear winner in this category.
Both entries have a consistent style throughout the work.
- Resolution:
Arkana-FTS GUI is slightly larger, but again it is very closly matched!
- Look/Feel:
RPG GUI construction kit v1.0
I really like this look feel. The background remains me of a scroll and the widgets are clean.
The texturing really brings it into it's own.
- Clear License:
Both have licenses posted.
RPG GUI construction kit v1.0: This says it uses public domain works, but doesn't have any references to verify.
Arkana-FTS GUI: appears to be all original work and license is clear.
- Original Sources:
Both have original sources and either would be easy to modify.
-Final:
Wow guys, you make this really difficult to judge! Both GUIs are of excellent quality and very closely matched in all categories. In the end I had to ask myself "if I was going to make an RPG game, which GUI would I use for it?"
First Prize: RPG GUI construction kit v1.0
Second Place: Arkana-FTS GUI
Both of you email me (dimecoin@gmail.com) your paypal address, in addition lamot should contact Bart for second half of prize money. I could also send personal check (via USPS) if preferred.
Thanks for participating. Even though turnout wasn't high, we got some high quality works on open art and in the end we're all winners because of it.
Woohoo :) It's the first time I got paid for my CG work, it's such a quantum leap for me :)
Good work on the Arkana-FTS GUI as well, it's good to see quality competition around here.
Regarding the public domain sources, I will post the info once I get home. There only two images used, both from www.burningwell.org the paper texture is made from scratch in GIMP. If I get to remember the procedure it would make for a nice tutorial?
I prefer payment via paypal and will send you the address soon (it's actually my sister's so I have to ask her about the address)
@ bart: it seems I completelly misunderstood what you wanted to do with the contest. A seperate and new contest would be cool. This time with a more general theme (not limited to RPG) and you could advertise it to game projects, since they make GUIs anyway and probably wouldn't mind some extra stimulation to push up the quality and get some money for their project's needs.
Anyway, regards :)
Same for us, it's like we rediscovered the fire ;-) Dime you are the best! And Lamoot your GUI looks really great too, I must confess.
