Well, ulitmate smash friends was made so it counts towards the potential roster of game characters.

Plus, since smash bros proper created captain falcon's entire moveset and by trasplanting it onto ganondorf changed him from a user of ranged magic, thrown pitchforks and the like into a hand to hand bruiser so I figure you have some wiggle room in regards to abilities with characters you do find. for example, you could take the schoolgirl(ayumi) the cheetahwoman(neko) and a robot(uhhh... robot?) from openarena(GPLv2) and make them all play differently. Also, plee the bear(CC-BY-SA) and alex the allegator(GPLv2+) from the games of the same name for some more characters to consider.

One more item suggestion would be a staff or rod in the style of flare(CC-BY-SA) as a battering weapon slash ranged magic weapon. You could have the different strengthed staffs with the better ones being rarer in drops/slower to chare/wear out faster ect

Oh, tux icon idea: terminal. a square box with a "$ _" inside as a reference to the (false) perception to how you need to use the command line to setup linux

blender foundation characters could match the project codenames (peach, apricot, durian ect) you likely already planned that but throwing that out there

red eclipse icon: if one close to the logo can't be used(there's a trademark on that if I recall, should check with the red eclipse team on that one. reuse/deriving of ingame artwork and such is fine) then we use a pistol icon styled after the one from the most recent red eclipse versions.

dink smallwood: a sword or a pig(he starts the game feeding them)

Is tux going to an all around mario style fighter considering his role in supertux and super tux kart? I'd imagine maryo's human status would likely be be best if you're going for a character who's more or less a clone of the plumber while tux should have his penguin-ness factored into his movements as I can't really see him being a hand to hand fighter due to the whole not having any thing.

Maryo's icon would based on the cloth on his head

Dunno why you'd need to ask permmision. In freedink's case as zlib is pretty permissive(and the freedink project only accepts free as in freedom cc-by-sa/GPL sound replacements if you use those) and as long as you're not going to try and DRM the red eclipse art, credit the artists and don't try to change or omit the license on artwork derived from cc-by-(sa) you'll be fine.

Other comment cut sort so reposting cut off link: For levels maybe a scavenger or player base warzone2100 style(GPL, possibly some CC stuff)

I might add that the red eclipse electrosword thing might be a good striking weapon pickup like the beam sword/home run bat from smash. The game also features a mine pickup.

Cool, this is the one of the few games types I miss in free software, hope something comes of it!

May as well toss out suggestions with art license details:

For a sword user with ranged attacks, perhaps >dink smallwood(art was zlib'd except for certian audio the author did not hold copyright to)

for dude(ette)s with guns and explosives the red eclipse(cc-by-[sa]) player characters or some from http://open

You could become a literal guitar hero with a weapon like that!

Plus, from an in universe perspective it makes sense for the merchant who bought it from you to attempt to resell what he bought at a higher price.

Ehh, titles are not and should not be copyrightable. Now the fact they couldn't be bothered to give credit is total BS.

The CC licenses even have 'explain it like I'm five' pages so it's not like understanding them is all that hard.

the cat-fist? Like the ran

the cat-fist? Like the ranma 1/2 martial arts technique where you throw a kid into a pit of starving cats while wrapped in fish products until they snap and start acting like a cat?

It's what comes to mind for me at least. D:
