So I've been thinking about making some buildings but i had no inspiration .
so instead i turn to the internet, couldn't find anything for a while and then i thought i will see about the google maps models, if i could somehow download and adapt..
checked the licence and :
"Rights granted to other end users of the Services. You give other end users of the Services a perpetual, sublicensable, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute Existing Geolocated Models, Existing Non-Geolocated Models, New Models and related content and derivative works thereof which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services."
basically making them public domain. there is lots of shit in there, plants, vehicles, loads of buildings etc..
just thought i might bring it to people's attention.
now of course the models need work, but that's the nature of it.. easier than starting from scratch.
enjoy.

Incorrect. Please read again.
"[...] on or through, the Services."

8.2 You should be aware that Content presented to you as part of the Services, including but not limited to advertisements in the Services and sponsored Content within the Services may be protected by intellectual property rights which are owned by the sponsors or advertisers who provide that Content to Google (or by other persons or companies on their behalf). With the exception of Content generated by you, you may not modify, rent, lease, loan, sell, distribute or create derivative works based on this Content (either in whole or in part) unless you have been specifically told that you may do so by Google or by the owners of that Content, in a separate agreement. For the avoidance of doubt, you may modify, distribute, and create derivative works of Content uploaded by other users in 3D Warehouse.
The terms prohibit re-distribution and modifications outside of 3D Warehouse.
The terms permit re-distribution and modifications only inside of 3D Warehouse.
No they dont.
here's a good discussion on the subject
http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=38857
and another discussion over at blenderartists
http://blenderartists.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-131594.html
to a google search for "3dwarehouse intellectual property law" and it will bring up many such discussions all saying the same thing.. models are fair game to reuse even in commercial content.
Both threads discuss text excerpts that do not exist in today's http://www.google.com/intl/en/sketchup/3dwh/tos.html document. Section 8.2. of the document clearly states that re-distribution and modifications outside of 3D Warehouse is prohibited.
I recommend that you carefully read the license.
Please try to use one post per reply.
fine, be a stick in the mud, ive read it over and over trying to find a way to interpret it your way. I've searched for internet discussions to back you up. its not happening.
I'm going to use the models, and I'm not going to feel bad about it. I'm not going to spend any more time on this impass.
I'm not a stick in the mud but thanks for teaching me that expression.
Here's how I came to the conclusion that use in own products is prohibited:
1. Look at This submission on Sketchup. The only indication of terms is the footer link to sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/preview_tos.html. Find a section in this document that permits the users of the Service to use the works outside of the Service. There appears to be none.
2. Look at http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=79&t=38857 and http://blenderartists.org/forum/archive/index.php/t-131594.html and copy parts of the text, for example "distribute copies of derivative works" - which seems essential to the interpreation of the users that use outside the services is permitted - and try to find that exact wording on sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/preview_tos.html and google.com/intl/en/sketchup/3dwh/tos.html . It seems impossible to find.
Works taken from or based on works from 3D Warehouse can not be released under free licenses without explicit permission by the copyright holders. This also means that they can't be uploaded to OpenGameArt.
Good luck with your project but I advise you to talk to people you trust to interpret a legal document for advice (and not rely on years-old forum posts by strangers).
