I've been thinking that Deevad's CC-BY licensed Pepper and Carrot comic could be adapted to a cute old-school platform game:
Mischievous Carrot getting himself into all sorts of trouble. eg:
Probably best to wait for more source content before doing anything serious, not that I very likely will, mind. (You could help in this regard by supporting Deevad's Patreon campaign).
Likenesses are terrible (I suck hard at characters):
Cool stuff, but do we really need another "cute 2D platformer"? Sure if you really feel like telling a story (which you don't seem to be), but just for the sake of having another one?

Geez. You might as well ask if we really need another fantasy RPG, shoot-em-up in space, Flappy Bird clone, zombie game, or pretty much anything that would go with ANY of the graphics on this site.
If it's what people what to make art for, and what people want to make games for, and the kind of games people want to play, then YES!
These kinds of graphics are adaptable to a wide range of game types. Unless you have an inherent dislike of anything "cute," you could find all sorts of use for these images. If you just don't like fun, cartoony images then just download something else.
Do you imagine that Pepper and Carrot would be better adapted as massively multiplayer FPS?

Really nice, and the author likes it! ;)

Will this be used in a future game?
Thought I'd take a stab at tweaking the hair and facial features. Thoughts?

Actually, Surt, is it cool with you if I run with this and try to turn it into a complete set (walk cycles, exterior tiles, etc)?
Yeah feel free. Consider any of my contribution CC0 (keeping in mind that the source content is CC-BY).

Awesome. :)
Seems like it would be kind of a cool thing to do as a Halloween post. I think I'll give it a shot. I'm not sure I have the pixel art chops to pull it off, but it should be fun to try.
Had a bit of a chance to work on this today. I tweaked her pose a bit and changed her skirt and socks to match the current comics.

Looks good.
I was thinking my sprite was looking out of date and the freed up legs are more appropriate if she's going to be running and jumping.

I've been poking around for examples of run cycles to use as a reference, and I stumbled on this:
http://www.yarrninja.com/pixeltutorial/chapter15.htm
I think I'm going to use those Sakura run frames as a reference point, although it's probably going to be challenging, since the Sakura's legs are freakishly long and the aspect ratio looks weird, like it's been compressed vertically a bit.
Here's a test of a 6 frame run cycle, based (loosely) on the above Sakura sprite.

And another progress image.
Note that these files are animated. Click on them to view the animation in the lightbox.

Tried it with my fantasy palette.

I worked some more on the colors. Here is a (non-animated) test of her costume.

The body animation looks good so far. My only complaint would be that the angle of her head doesn't match that of her body - when her left arm is forward it looks great, as in the last still image, but animated (and especially in the frame with her right arm forward) it feels a bit awkward.
My project: Bits & Bots
Yeah, I'm planning on changing the angle of her head. Per a suggestion from Redshrike, I'm probably going to remove at least some of the internal outlines, too.
Here's the latest version:

And with her facing forward:

I think I've finally managed to correct the issue with it not being obvious which leg is in front. The positioning of her legs and her shirt didn't account for the way the torso twists when running.

And animated...

And riding a broom (not animated). Turns out I was able to adapt one of the running frames for this.

Looking good.
The tip of the hat really needs to bob some in the run animation.

Darkened the far leg a bit in the running animation..

Nice art! If there aren't any other takers for coder, I'd be willing to give it a shot. I would be interested in releasing as a sold app for android/linux (windows too if someone can cross-compile for me). Besides the run animation, is there any other art planned? Also, any game-mechanic ideas besides platform jumping?

I love these! I also think that darkening the back leg makes a big difference. Can't wait to see what else you come up with!
Finally got around to hacking together a quick test.
