We need a quick art challenge theme to preceed the upcoming OGA Game Jam #2.
Any ideas? I'm initially thinking something rather broad to get a large variety of content, but I'm not opposed to a more focused topic if it helps drive inspiration. Even something like "Game Jam Art" or "The assets we lack" work for me.
Thoughts?
how about 'Hobbies' a side from drawing or game dev as a hobbie, what other things do you like to do?
Fishing? create some fishing assets
jigsaws? create so jigsaw inspired tiles
cookin? create some things associated with cooking
disc jockey? create some music related stuff
im sure there are many different hobbies out there that you lot get up too when you have spare time. :)

Alligator coming up your toilet keep them form eating every thing in your house or man hole covers save the town for being eatn
Big foot play big foot and hide or hunt big foot
Moth man
Skin walkers

I maybe turning into 'Mr. Palette' but if you're looking for a theme that would steer the results towards assets that could be used together for the Game Jam, you could go with a palette as a theme. Like DB32 or NES.
Maybe 'Popular Palettes' could be the theme and the requirement would be that the work use one of a short list of popular palettes on OGA. DB16, DB32, NES, SMS all spring to mind. Am I missing one?

Ok, here's the ones I think seem the best:
If anyone has a preference or is particularly inspired by one, say so soon. I'll decide on one early tomorrow and announce the new Art Challenge and the soon-to-follow Game Jam on the main page.

There is definitely such a thing as a "paltette of sounds". Like using a specific arrangement of instruments, or a specific sound chip even.
One idea might be to just pick a location...Ancient Egypt, Italy, Island Paradise. Just trying to think of things where music/sfx would fit in just as well as visual art--many themes lend themself to one or the other.
of the ones I didn't recommend, I like 'Hobbies' the best, but I have a feeling that might lead to some very eclectic contributions, so if you're looking for something that might help feed into the Game Jam, my vote goes for Missing Link.
That said, Urban Legends is a great theme for fall (Halloween) and again I love Hobbies, so definitely bank for those for later use. :)

You miss understand @withlove not just a scary Halloween idea.
I would say for me making 3d assets in a giving palette kinda makes it counter intuitive. Some of use aren't just working with (pixels) as for missing link that's also a good idea I like the 404 idea I could still give some creative licenses.
And twist it to go with legends. Like a land fill full of ET video games, or MiB, UFO cow mutilations a 404 end like Trials Evolution that sets clues that spans decade's like going to the Eiffel tower in 2113

gotcha, I guess it just made me think Halloween because there are so many creepy, scary urban legends.
Definitely see the point about a palette theme not applying well outside of pixel art. Still think it would make a fun challenge, but understand if folks don't want to use a theme that's so form specific.

Sorry @withlove hope I wasn't coming across rude.
I love the idea of old school nes palette after posting I thought it would be cool to have a pixle game with a kid trying to save the ET games from the land fill.
Like he's riding a bike with a basket full of game cartridges and being chased by the dreaded Atari company.
It could only be pulled off by old school pixle art go's without saying.
I think clint even has some bike game asset that would fit for this also.

But the copyrights would have to be watched very close lol wouldn't want Atari coming after you
PS. if you fell in a hole you would never get out.

@Spring, @AnthonyMyers: Good point about palettes. I think they can apply to all the art categories.
@Joth: Nice. I can definitely see a location theme working well.
@WithTheLove, @AnthonyMyers: I'll bank Hobbies and Urban Legends for future challenge topics. Definitely good ideas.
Looks like Missing Link has a slight consensus over the others and it works well leading up to the Game Jam, too. I'll announce the Art Challenge shortly. These are some good challenge ideas! I'm excited to put all these themes to good use for the next several challenges.

In a fantasy setting there are often plenty of assets available for the good guys, but not so many for the villains of the story: the orcs, goblins, trolls, ogres, and so forth. So my challenge suggestion is:
Monster Village -- Create assets for filling out and populating a crude village of evil goblinoids and their cohorts.
Hi all!
Just wanted to let folks know that I just queued up a bunch of art challenges for the coming months including:
Hobbies
Monster Village
Urban Legends
South Paw Pride
and
My Favorite Palette
Thanks for all the great ideas!

Any monthly art challenges, planning, or having ideas yet??
Tad
I think they are coming soon. :) im sure @withthelove will announce once he is ready. :)
