It's time for the Spring 2019 Art Challenge!
This Spring's theme is:
A New Look
It's a special time at OpenGameArt.org, work is well underway on the exciting OGA 3.0 project (you can read all about it here https://opengameart.org/content/oga3-front-page-layout-feedback) and the new code base calls for a complete re-write of the OGA home page layout. Should we keep the classic look with just a few nips and tucks here and there, or should we go for a complete makeover? Now's your chance to chime in and show us how you would re-design the OpenGameArt home page!
No coding required, just submit a mockup image showing the OpenGameArt.org homepage as you envision it.
Of course, if you want to setup an actual prototype web page to show off your design, have it! Just include a link to the prototype in your submission, but also be sure to include at least one screen capture of the page so folks can see your design without leaving OGA or worrying about the dreaded browser incompatibility monster.
You can license your submission(s) however you want, licenses will be understood to only inlcude the preview or mockup image for your design and not the design itself nor any of the actual code, layout files, etc. etc. behind it.
Yes 'submission(s)', multiple submissions are allowed! ;)
Ultimately, the final design for the OpenGameArt 3.0 home page will be decided upon by the coders who are working to make it happen and the site-admins who will have to live with it ever-after, so there's no promise that the winning entry for this challenge will be used, but all the same this is your chance to have your voice heard, show us what you would do if you had OGA's future homepage in the palm of your hands! :)
Finally, as an option for those who maybe loathe web page design but still want to participate in this season's challege, 'normal' submissions (2D art, 3D models, music, etc.) will be accepted as well, so long as they fit the theme of A New Look. Maybe give one of the many great portrait collections on OGA a makeover, or have a go at up-rezzing or down-rezzing one of your favorite OGA entries, or perhaps a collection of barber sprites, whatever you can dream up!
The submission with the most favorites by close-of-vote wins! Challenge and voting starts today, Friday, March 1 2019. Have all your entries submitted by Sunday, March 24th, 2019. Voting closes one week after that at 11:59 PM Sunday, March 31st. That's a little over three weeks to submit and 1 week to vote. Voters: You can 'favorite' as soon as you see a submission you like, no need to wait for anything.
Be sure to tag your submissions with both a "Challenge" and "A New Look" tag. Also, post a link to your submission in this thread as well.
oh, just a nota buena, the category for home page mockups should be 'concept art'.

I feel that the current colour scheme is harsh on the eyes and the art is blurry.
A few points I think will make the visual aspect of the site better:
1. The top navigation bar should be separated more from the rest of the site and the links (browse, faq etc...) should be on the same line, along with the search and login bar. I like the colour scheme of the buttons too.
2. Each art piece should be recognised in its own right and should have a box to keep it separate. Also, white and blue work better together so the title shadow should be white as well. I do like the title shadow though.
3. In line with the whole "separate" theme of the art, I think that the art box should change its appearance when the mouse is hovering over it.
4. I feel the categories should be separated too (Me again with the separation lol).
5. As much as the nostalgia of the default OGA blue brings, it doesn't work great to display the art. Maybe a colour to help the art jump out? Dunno what's the replacement though.
Just my two cents. I love the idea that OGA's getting a revamp, keep up the good work! ;)
EDIT: Just realized you were supposed to submit art... :P lol. I might if I get the time sorry.
@withthelove
What should be the resolution/dimensions of such a mockup?
@flofflewoffle considering its a web page, he resolution should be good. (ie 1920 x how long you want the screen to be)
Where are we suppose to post our submissions? I got push back from another user who said "If you want to post this kind of stuff then do so in the forum.
It is not game art, so it doesn't belong in the gallery."
Bweh, surt is such a rude piece of shit
@Fral Kritic: You posted exactly as instructed and have done nothing wrong. I think there is just some confusion because typically OGA does not accept submissions unless they are 'game ready' art, which these designs clearly aren't nor are they intended to be. I have replied on the other thread to help clarify things.
@Spring: Please keep it civil. Regardless of how you feel about a post or another community member, it doesn't serve anyone to make nasty comments yourself.
Re: resolution, as DarkAgeGames suggested 1920x1080 is a good size to use, but really the mockups can be whatever dimensions you please. The idea is just to show the general layout and orientation of your design, so any image that conveys that should be fine. Heck if someone wants to do a 'de-make' design in 320x240 or something, that would be super cool!

@withthelove
Apologies. I try to be a kind person, which is why seeing someone who seemingly makes no attempt at the same will seem offensive.
@Flofflewoffle Flooferwoofer I commend you for your humility, because I know exactly how you feel and it takes courage to apologize even when the feeling is legit <3
Keep being an amazing person and thanks for coming to my rescue :D <3
@withthelove Thanks so much for the heads up! I was worried, I haven't been here long and thought I was breaking rules already LOL XD
@fral Kritic
Hehe, I'm flattered but there's no need to be grateful to me. I haven't rescued anyone really XD but yeah,,, surt has somewhat of a track record of making unfriendly/mean/arrogant whatever comments here..... as much as I want to put him in his place tho, I know it's not the right thing to do especially when I was not even personally involved, I just got carried away for some reason.
Ahhh, time is running short but I might just have to call quits on this challenge !
I really want to support the initiative but I really have no ideas for how to redesign the page or how to even design one in general ;; I think the main thing that needs to be fixed is technical issues, not a change of all the visuals, and I'm not sure how I draw that?
draw a mockup and show annotations! :)
<----- here's where users can submit comments THAT DON'T BREAK FROM PASTED TEXT
Down here is where new submissions are shown (NOTE THE LACK OF DUPLICATE ENTRIES) ---\/
:P
That is a good point; there's not many easy ways to graphically indicate technical improvements. Is there any visual or design layout aspects of the current site you'd like to change? Just focus on those. Even an ms-paint sketch of the site layout would probably help people visualize potential changes. :)

stole my own idea and went with a SMS De-make:
https://opengameart.org/content/oga-sms-demake
Probably not useful as a final design, but I will say compressinig the site down to such a small size did help focus my mind on what was essential, at least IMHO.

Intended to mockup a page, built a demo site, oops:

OOps...
I misread it and thought we had until the 31st to submit. Oh well... Better late than never. Look at it here.
Thanks!
And the winner is....
Daft-Freak for 'Site Design: Light and Dark' (https://opengameart.org/content/site-design-light-and-dark)
Thanks to everyone who participated either by submitting, voting or commenting!
We got some great entries, I'd say the site developers have their work cut out for them trying to choose between all these cool design ideas! :)
https://withthelove.itch.io/
Congratulations, Daft-Freak, and thanks to all the participants! Trophies have been awarded.
@Daft-Freak: I've gotta say I really appreciated you going the extra mile making not one, but
twothree functional demonstration sites of the designs ("Site Design: Light & Dark" by Daft-Freak, "OpenGameArt.org Dark theme" by DarkAgeGames, demo'd by daft-freak)I think this challenge was a pretty big success; I'd be proud to have OGA use any one of the site layouts submitted. There really are some good ideas in these. Looking forward to incorporating all the best features. :)

I enjoyed entering in this, hadn't had the chance to do this kind of thing for a while.
@MedicineStorm You missed the link to the light one, also I'm going to release the code for that demo soon.
OMG I did miss it. Even better!
