It's time for the Summer 2019 Art Challenge!
This year's theme is:
My Summer Time Thing
Summer's finally here and it's time to celebrate by sharing some art inspired by our favorite summer time activities!
Sand castles at the beach, ice cream in the park, fishing on the lake? What's your summer time thing? Let us know by sharing some game art inspired by it!
For the past few years my summer time thing has been driving around blaring NeoCrey's Miami Soul (https://opengameart.org/content/neocrey-miami-soul) out the windows. Of course, sometimes I give the neighbors a break and swap it out for this other summer time classic from MD: https://youtu.be/JRvOmgw5tq8 :)
The submission with the most favorites by close-of-vote wins!
Challenge and voting starts tomorrow, Saturday June 1, 2019. Have all your entries submitted by end of the day on Sunday, June 23rd, 2019. Voting closes one week after that at 11:59 PM Sunday, June 30th. That's a little over three weeks to submit and 1 week to vote. Voters: You can 'favorite' as soon as you see a submission you like, no need to wait for anything.
Be sure to tag your submissions with both a "Challenge" and "My Summer Time Thing" tag. Also, post a link to your submission in this thread as well.
My summer time thing is sitting inside being scared of people,,
@Spring: sounds like some interior tilesets!
--Medicine Storm
no one cares about my tilesets or want to use them :p
C'm on, Spring, stop being so negative.
Everybody loves your art, here ! Wether it is music, 2D art, games.
You are always too hard with yourself.
Thanks,, I will always feel the same way no matter what you say though. But yes, it really hasn't got anything to do with this community, I just give them the blame that they don't deserve but it's only myself there is something wrong with.
I'll give it a shot.
Edit: It's available here: https://opengameart.org/content/summer-resort-theme
Haw's that ? Do i just put the file here or do i put it in my section with a hashtag ?

Actually at the risk of spam, i was extremely allergic to pollen as a kid so i never learned to play in the hay and like it, which brings my summertime down to mostly(pic -> lol)
made with KumaKuma i posted it on steem https://steemit.com/@rudyardcatling (be wary of R to Z-rated language on that one ...)
maybe someone can relate :p
(earned a point in 'talkative' ??!? = lol )

Submit the work as normal ('Submit Art' button on top of OGA home page).
Then add: "Challenge" and "My Summer Time Thing" in the 'tags' field.
I believe the quotes are unnecessary, so if you want something to directly cut and paste in there, try this:
challenge,my summer time thing Sorry to hear about those pollen allergies!
okee then, i'll give it a try, thanks, and that's fine, i probably wouldn't be who i am without it and i might not like many things about the world, but i'm not really mal-content with me heh ... some people would say narcist but that's over the top , i dont love myself , i just don't dislike or demean myself ... it's a thin line hahah - often mistaken.
I should probably scale those down, they seem to be at max resolution, i assume something HD-ish would be plenty ?

I will try making some art for this challenge.
But there is a high risk it looks like "programmer's art" :-(
as long as you have a good idea for it...
@xom adept ... have you seen the stuff warhol got famous with , or 'lol' the guys they call "flemish primitives" (and those tings are still recognizable ... that's a long way from Patrick Rubinstein or Miwa Yanagi or Dali, but for some reason people call it art, it's about expression, man (or wo-man , lol ) Don't shy away

@alleycat : Thanks for your encouragements.
I actually posted some art for the challenge, the day after my previous post here.
It is an ice cream. :-)

https://opengameart.org/content/pool-cookout
My summer thing is food, so here is a lot of food: https://opengameart.org/content/lpc-food

no need to feel pity on me!
that being said, I agree with you, many good entries!
Voting has begun! So get out there and favorite your favorite! :)
There is still "Status : Accepting art submissions" on OGA home page, though.
@xom:
(thanks for reminder. Fixed)
--Medicine Storm
Do I just do a search for the tag "My Summer Time Thing" or "Challenge" to find all the (correctly tagged) submissions? What about old challenges? Won't they be tagged as "Challenge" as well?
you can do a search for multiple tags at once ^^
Okay, I've got the search thing figured out. And if previous challenges used the same tags, I can sort the results by date.
Please do another challenge soon after this one gets over... pleeeeeeaaaaase. <3
You would just search for both the tag "challenge" AND "my summer time thing". This shows only the entries for this challenge.
Also, how do you all feel about a "water" challenge next? Several people have mentioned animated water recently, but this would apply to ambient music and sound effects, too.
--Medicine Storm
A water challenge would be nice, I think I might draw Poseidon for that :D
Agree, water challenge sounds fun. :)
Congratulations, bluecarrot16 on your delicious summertime feast!
Thanks also to all who participated. Trophies awarded! :)

Congratulations to all participants !
Hello, everybody. Long time I have not posted here on OGA. How is everyone?
I was wondering : when is the next art challenge?
I suggest we make a challenge to produce assets for the games we talked about here : https://opengameart.org/forumtopic/ideas-for-games.
We could even make several challenges with these ideas.
What do you think of this?
I could see myself making that Annelids game sometime. ^^
I've lost a lot of time. Who won
Bluecarrot16 won :) with thier awesome Food assets,
if you scroll up a bit MedicineStorm has linked thier submission. :)
Since we are here on the art challenge, are we ready for another? and to start getting this art challenge going on a more consistant manner, someone needs to get this badboy by the horns. :)
anyone? @Medicinestorm @withthelove @danorder @Xomadept any of you want to do this on a more pemanent basis? I dig the 'sharing it' mentalty, the trouble is doing it this way is it leads to weeks, some times months before another challenge is started, how about a 'Rota'?.
I know sometimes maybe there isn't the participation as we would like, which maybe leads to people thinking 'well, i leave it', but if we keep a more consistant flow, overtime it will show 'activity' and more people will join in eventually. :)
New Year, New Start, lets start as we mean to go on
HAPPY NEW YEAR! :)

@all:
I am happy to step in and run quarterly Art Challenges (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall).
In fact, I was planning on running a Winter Challenge starting on Jan 1 until I fell over with a stomach bug that's had me laid up for the past week. On the mend now though, so maybe it's not too late to get something setup for middle of the month.
What format do people like best for the Art Challenges?
The current approach I've been using is 3 weeks to submit, 1 week to vote.
I don't mind that, it's kind of low key and technically favors early submitters but it does seem to work out ok.
I've also typically announced the theme and the challenge all at one go.
Would people prefer to know the theme further in advance? Like if the theme were announced the month before the challenge? The idea just being to give people more time to prepare and create works while at the same time not having an endless submission window.
I have noticed with the Game Jams that getting the word out well before the Jam actually begins does seem to help participation, so I guess to some degree I'm wondering if maybe the same thing doesn't apply to the Art Challenges?
@withthelove: I do like that format, but I am not opposed to alternatives either.
Please don't forget to PM me so I can post jam and challenge announcements on the front page. I think that also contributes to participation and getting the word out. You should have access to do some of that stuff now, but I have no problem making it fancy for everyone. :)
--Medicine Storm
@withthelove Sorry to hear youve been unwell mate, not the best start to the new year for ya, hope you get better soon!
I like the format, 3 weeks, 1 week vote, im down with that, that covers 4 months of the 12, and them leading into the 'seasonal' game jams.(which i think need cementing as well, Xomadept posted here https://opengameart.org/forumtopic/winter-2020-game-jam
i think 1 art challenge a month would be a good idea to try and do, maybe we could have others volunteer for those if anyone interested, i don't mind doing one or some if needed.
I think knowing about the art challenges before they start would be a good idea, at least until they are more known to the community that they will be more concurrent and expected. :)
I think its really important that we all know whos doing what and when, so theres no one second guessing any events that the community put together or clashes. If this could be done, then maybe we could announce something on the frontpage, idk, a timeline, schedule just something that new users or returning users can actually see whats happening on OGA throughout the year, and not get lost through disapearing forum threads.
@MedicineStorm I agree, definatly helps raise awarness, its good that you can do that, and thank you. :)

@chasersgaming:
I agree with your concern about things getting lost in the shuffle if they are confined to just forum threads.
For example, it'd be cool to have a way to pre-load the next 3 or 4 art challenges and then have a link where people could click to see 'Upcoming Art Challenges' or something like that.
But I'm not sure how much new development we can ask for right now, I know there is the big 'OGA 2.0' overhaul still going on, so I doubt there's too much appetite for adding new features to the current site.
I'm nervous to comitt to running one art challenge a month, but I do think it'd be nice for the site to sort of always have a challenge going. I think that would encourage more engagement over time. I'll think about how I could manage suppporting that. Being able to pre-load the challenges would help, because that would allow me to 'work ahead' a bit, so to speak, so if something like what happened this month where I got sick at the first of the month happens again all wouldn't be lost.
Perhaps a front page post would help, and i'm sure Medicinestorm would do that, and that would be more perminant as it doesn't get used for anything else, no extra development needed. :) Just a image or Just up and comming event text.
Im here everyday, so i could always bump any forum thread post to keep it at the top . ;)
I understand what you mean by being nervous, so it wouldn't be fair to ask you to do all the challenges, unless you wanted to, I'm more than happy to do a couple if others don't, to take the stress off, and if you did fall sick or something else came up, you only have to say "Chaser, Ive got the two bob bits, could you do the art challenge for me this month" , il be more than happy to step in for you to help out.
If you stuck for ideas, im sure the community could chuck some ideas out for you to work with aswell. It doesn't have to be to complicated, any challenge would be good either way. :)

I guess what I could do is just post the monthly challenges to the 'Weekly Challenge' forum, which is where I normally post them anyways. But instead of posting a challenge just as it starts, I could post as many challenges as I needed to ahead of time, giving them each their own topic. Then I can use the magic medicine storm showed me to push the current challenge to the front page at the start of each month. Folks who wanted to see what challenges were coming up could just peek in the 'Weekly Challenge' forum.
well, I don't know if that makes any sense, but I think it could work.
Sounds good, and a good plan! Abracadabra! :)
