Hi Everyone,
I'm needing some banner art for the up and comming Summer Game Jam. If there is anyone interested in doing it this year could they let me know below.
First jam was done by ElizaWY, the second was done by Withthelove, this year you?
I would need 2 images, one with the banner image itself, which should include an picture of 'Sara' the OGA mascot and something that you think covers summer and games in general. this should be a minuim size of 315 x250. The second is for background, something light, not to heavy, but compliments the banner. simular to last years background https://itch.io/jam/opengameart-game-jam-2 would be good.
I would need them 2 weeks before the jam starts in july. :)
Thanks.
Or if there are more than 1 person/s that want to do this then maybe we could set it up as an 'art challenge'?
really pretty!
that looks fantastic!
looking back, I definitely should have given the text a proper re-working on my variants instead of just scaling it all down from the original and hoping for the best.
We have to get someone to do a GB game now :D
ive seen a lot of games using gameboy asethetics lately, Gameboy is coming back! :) id love to see one in the jam.
Hows everyone doing then? has anyone started yet? don't be shy about sharing your progress. those on twitter , use hashtag #OGASummerJam3, i will retweet and share anything i find.
Im hoping to try and do something(wont submit though till after the jam ends) depends if i can get the time inbetween all my other workload.

Oh yeah, I already started and is pretty well on the way! Unfortunately I have no twitter :p
And it's neither a gameboy styled game x'D
I added my versions of the banner here : https://itch.io/jam/oga-summer-game-jam-3-2019/topic/476291/official-unofficial-oga-gamejam-summer-2019-made-for-splash-pages
@Basto :
Nice font you used here.
well, i did do a little animation, but i cant figure out how to upload a GIF here.

I don't know whether I'll participate, but recoloring zoria tileset with gameboy colors could work.

looks kind of moody like that, but I like it!
Oh, man. I completely forgot about this. I didn't even think of anything or do up any art work, but I might still try something that is in a super tiny scope. Good luck guys!
I decided to slop together my own banner!

XD Amazing !!
Now you don't have to worry about Halloween's gamejam banner ;)
The animation is terrifying :)
really cute and well animated!
Do you think using general MIDI as opposed to OGG would be a good idea for my soundtrack?
There are also more specific chiptune formats like the glorious master system xD (probably not using that though)
(I asked about that on itch as well, but I doubt anyone would read that)
@ spring how do you make tunes? Hardware or plugins?
Trackers ^^
@VinnNo.0 very cool banner, how you upload a GIf, i can't seem to do it. :(
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
Haha, thanks guys.
@Chaser I just did it on my phone, through "choose file" and "upload". I haven't been able to do anything on oga via desktop firefox :/
@vinnNo oh i see, im using chrome desktop, no worky for me. i lost my phone, and ipad doesn't work to post. my banner was only a rough thing anyway. il try and post it another time. :)

OGA ani banner.gif 60.9 Kb [4 download(s)]
very cute!
Midi is not a good idea since the sound depends very much on the players soundfont.
You are right about the sound varying, it's pretty hard to write a midi tune which sounds good on everything.
Do you have a suggestion for a different format?
I would just use ogg and add source files for the interested.
If you want to cling to tracker formats you could try using libmodplug.
Yeah that works quite well, I've used it in previous games though and was just looking for different opportunities. ^^
Those gifs are cool guys. It could be used like the old sega logo at the start of games :)
With the help of my missus, I made some audio to go with them. Defo using one for my submission ;)
*Edit*
I had a noodle around with the gif plus audio in Unity and the ani banner works better if the frames are extended slightly to fit the new audio EDIT. The "wink" action should be made to line up with the coin sound at the end.

For some reason I find those voices a little creepy, but I still like them ^_^;
@ Spring haha Ye I know. It reminds me of the chucky doll. "I'm your friend to the end" or whatever he says :)
Never watched those movies so I really have no idea xD
How are everyone's games doing?
Dunno, I'm learning how to use the GameBoy Development Kit.
I made a new logo with more free and also more repeating 8x8 tiles.
I don't think I can mirror sprites with a GameBoy, but I also tried to mirror where possible.

making a gameboy game?
I thought the rules said it had to be windows games.
> there should be a windows default build available for download.
*mhm I planned to bundle it with an emulator. When you make a game with godot it would also need to bundle it with it's executables.
Definitely a brave choice you make! But very cool too !
"Thought the rules said it had to be a windows game"
No it doesn't, but i did write in the rules there should be a windows build of your game. Perhaps i need to be a bit more clearer on that somehow. :)
'There should be a windows default'
'Should be'
This is because not everyone will have other versions or software to play certain games on particular platforms or emulators. Especially myself and i need this to be able to check assets. if i cant check the assets then i cant confirm the 6 asset rule can be followed. I do where i can download those other things needed to play your games, but it isn't a custom for others to do so, and they may not for whatever reasons, fear of malicious file, sign ups etc, so that could be a disadvantage to your game being played or rated, so i suggest there should be a windows default. but you don't have to if you dont want to, but for reasons i have just mentioned i would encourage you to do so, entirely up to you. You can at the end of the day use any software you like to create your project. :)
Edit: I have updated the jam page to read the following:
"It is not mandatory to have a Windows build by default for your project, but i do recommend it having one for your project."
Sorry for misleading there. I myself think its a good idea to have a Windows build for a fair few reasons, but i figured i was kinda 'forcing' projects to actually have one by having it written the way it was. My intent was to encourage such a thing, but in no way to make it so participants couldn't/wouldn't be able to participate because of it, or to think that they couldn't because thier software doesn't provide an export, or have to pay for a module for that export. So i hope this is now better worded. :) and those that are using softwares/engines that do not provide a Windows build can be rest assured that its OK to build and submit projects without the need to have a windows build. :) (but i think it would be a good idea to have one)

@Chaser That gif is pretty slick, dude!
@ZomB I dropped that sound file into animate and stretched the keys out and it kinda synchs up. Unfortunately, I won't have time to do the mouth animations. I only spent maybe 20 minutes on the banner to be a part of the crowd anyway lol Either way, good work.
@Spring My progress is almost non-existent. Ive only had 4 development sessions, two of which I recorded to be a sudo-tutorial series. There's a lot of complaints in the UE4 community about there not being any c++ tutorials (almost all of the tutorials are for the visual scripting) and there's next to nothing for 2D. So, like 3 birds with one stone. Hopefully, IllI get something playable.
@vinnNo, no worries mate I love the banner as is :) Ye there are a couple of ways to sync up the audio hey.
I am using Unity so I extracted the Png frames in Photoshop imported them into unity's animator, extended/re-arranged some to make it fit the audio. 2 minutes of a job ;)
I added chasers banner to the very start of my submission. It gives it a pro touch lol!
Good luck with your entry!
Creating an animated OGA splash on gameboy does take quite some time :D
But because of you guys I want to slide out O and A.
And also let sara blink in the end.
Who needs a story if you can have a cool splash screen?
@basto haha! It's a fun little detour. You might get extra points :)
I don't know what I would do without Buch and Surt

Looking good @Basto! gameboy arkanoid! well retro, is that TNT i see, ohhhhhhhhhh, very cool, what engine you using?
anyone else like to share there sreenshots/progress? dont forget #OGASummerJam3 for twitter for those that are on there. :)
We have had one submission already, but its not within the rules of the jam, i have reached out to the developer to update the pages, so just a reminder to all that credits for the OGA assets being use MUST be within the game, comment section, or game pages. any 3 of these ways is fine. but please make sure you do one of them. :)

I just submitted my entry, but to be honest, when looking back at it, I'm not really sure why I even participated in this, other than lacking anything better to do.
https://flofflewoffle.itch.io/the-war-over-a-melon-field
Good. I will try it tomorrow. I already like the music of this game.
I am quite curious to see what the story and gameplay look like.
@chasersgaming: I use http://gbdk.sourceforge.net/
Screenshot is taken from gambatte core of retroarch.
Source assets are https://opengameart.org/content/breakout-set and https://opengameart.org/content/monkey-lad-in-magical-planet
@Basto Thanks il take a look at that at some time. :)
@Spring Im glad you participated, participation helps support the jam, thanks for uploading. look forward to playing it. :)

I hope it follows the rules! (Given that there was no rule about the different categories this time. But if that is an issue I'll just upload all the music and it should be fixed?)
different categories this time? what do you mean?
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
there used to be a rule in former game jams that the OGA assets used in a game should belong to different categories (2D art, 3D art, music etc.) but there seems to have been no such rule this time ^^
oh yeah, i remember now, no your right, it wasn't in the last summer jam either. I laxed that because creating consistant coherent enviroments could prove difficult having to have to use 2 assets from each categories, plus it allows more freedom for manouver. Think it works better this way, well i do anyway. :)

Someone submitted a $1 game
https://itch.io/jam/oga-summer-game-jam-3-2019/entries
That submission has now been removed from the jam. :) Thanks
