I've implemented the first quest chain for Flare. It's fairly generic (and I'm sure my writing is mediocre) but it's ready for testing.
Please send feedback about the quest mechanics, especially if you get stuck and can't advance the quest line. Note that I don't really care about story feedback at this point; this quest chain simply demonstrates the basic way quests can be put together.
I will attempt to add a Quest tab to the Log menu next -- once I get that working, v0.13 will probably be ready for release.
Finished the quest chain twice - with an existing char and with a new char. With the existing one I got stuck at Professor Langlier dropping regular loot instead of the talisman quest item. Replaying the level and killing him again gave me the expected result and I could continue the quest chain without problems.
Anon, by any chance did you have to go back to Guill to get the Langlier quest chain moving again?
Is there a compiled version of this? If so, can you link me?
Redshrike: not yet. Maybe tomorrow I'll try to post a Windows compile
I'm getting stuck at the second part. I killed the goblin and got my reward, then the scribe tells me to go get the emblem, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. As far as I can tell, I've killed all of the bosses and ransacked all the crates/chests/graves, but still nothing.
Nope, i just left and reentered the Averguard Acadamy level.
johndh, check the book stand in the goblin's area.
I'll change that leg of the quest. I didn't realize how un-obvious that part is.
Quest items should have a different (text) color making it easier to differentiate them from the salable items. For instance, a vibrant red would do here.
Ahh... I tend to ignore the books now that I've seen them all multiple times. That probably would have been more obvious to a new player. Aside from that minor hang-up, the quest chain went flawlessly. I did have to resist the temptation to just teleport across the locked door, though. :)
I uploaded a Windows build for people who want to try the new quest chain.
This is quite close to v0.13. I will try to add a Quest tracking area to the Log menu, but if I get too busy I might just put out v0.13 and do the quest log later.
I've just tried r359, that's very nice, it works perfectly, quest chain (and quest) are great improvement.
Thanks a lot !
Yeah quest work and quest monsters (bosses) do not drop Quest Items if you don't have an active quest but sometimes I can loot the boss chest without kiling the boss I don't know how that is triggered ... ill try to investigate and keep you updated : )
Mumu, right now I have that boss chest rigged so it only opens if you've defeated the boss at least once. It was just the easiest way to go with my current setup
Just tested the new quest tab in the log book. Everything looks shipshape. This will help immensely when there's multiple quests going on simultaneously, and when you resume a game from before.
one little request.
when we are in the menus, would it be possible to close them automaticly if we click in the game screen ?
so that we do not have to click on each icon to close that icon menu.
as for the rest everything so far looks good.
Clint you may start thinking about translations, as I would like to start to translate it already little by little (even if more times) before having to do all at once before a big release. Other people who can not read english would like to be able to complete the quests also ;)
jorge
mjminfo, if you hit Esc it wil close all open menus. Also you can press the hotkey to open and close that menu (default "L" for the Log menu. The hotkey can be changed in the key bindings file).
I do want to add translation support soon (maybe around release v0.15). I'm not worried about it until then. I'm not even sure if any of these maps or quests will be in the first real game.
I've kill a final boss in Averguard keep (the lord of averguard), then came back to Guill, he said that it's ok, lord is now pacified and other undeads will be soon.
as i understand, I have done everything for Guill, so I went to starting location to take some other quest, but Martigan Overseer tells the same: "A member of Order passed..." meaning that I didn't finish his previous quest.
What is wrong?
Why after all I've done in Averguard Martigan speeks like i even didn't find Guill?
Should i forget about Martigan ang go somwhere else to find other quests, or there are not any other quests, or, maybe, it is my mistake and i still didn't finish Averguard quest chain and it need any additional actions to do?
oh, i almost forgot, i'm playing flare v 0.15.1-1
Fenris, the problem you are facing is a symptom of the fact that Flare is essentially just a tech demo at this point. Now that you've completed the Averguard quest, there is no more storyline.
If you haven't already, you should check out the caves attached to the inside of the Averguard Keep. They have higher-level monsters than the rest of the dungeon. I think the caves consist of maybe 2 maps?
After that, there is only one more side quest you can complete - the Cave of Living Bones - if you can find it. It's past the Averguard Keep, somewhere in the Yddraka Pass.
Once you've completed that, you've essentially beaten the game. We could always use more content, but up until now, we've been focusing on the engine. (Though that might change soon!)
Cave of Living Bones is great especially the unique ****.
Just downloaded this on Ubuntu this morning, and I'm liking it! This quest went pretty well, though I had a little bit of a tough time finding the Pass in the first place, after clearing the Goblin camp. Maybe if the dude in town just let me known that the Pass is to the northeast of the Frontier, I'd be happy.
Excellent Game But I finish the Averguard the goblins and the Brothers in the Cave of livings bones thats all ?
I want more FLARE Sorry for my bad english i'm Mexican C:
Anon,
glad you enjoy the current content. It's still an Alpha tech demo so there isn't much content. Soon we will plan many more maps and quests.
Hi.
I finished the Averguard Keep quest and then ran around randomly for a while looking for something else to do. Eventually I found my way to the caves of living bones and blew up the big rock thing. Now I'm working my way thru the caves.
If I can offer a few suggestions:
1) Have Guill give us an idea of what to do next. It seems like a bunch of us were just heading back to the village to ask the miner if he has anything else for us to do (or if anything has come up in the village since we left on our quest).
2) after Guill gives us another quest, it would be nice to circle back to the village at some point later (perhaps things at the village deteriorated since we left, and we can be sent to that zombie vault you were working on?)
3) have the vendors at the village get better stuff as we level up. You can't find anything useful at the village vendors after about level 3.
4) Or, failing that, let us come across (or have to travel to) another village with vendors so we can trade. After the Averguard Keep arc we have lots of gold and nothing to do with it!
And can I ask a few questions:
1) when a new release comes out, will it be part of my regular linux (ubuntu) updates, or will I have to actually re-install the new game? I downloaded it from the ubuntu software centre, if that makes any difference.
2) if I have to re-install the new game, will it tell me when a new version is ready to be installed? (I'm playing v0.15 right now, I understand v0.16 is ready?)
3) any idea when you will have an update ready?
Awesome work, guys. The game is really fun. I really like how a player has to change tactics while playing thru. For a while I was using heal, then I got the shield upgrade as I leveled up. Then as I went thru the cave of living bones, the shield wasn't very effective, so I went back to using heal! It's nice to be forced to change your tactics mid-game like that when confronted with a situation you cannot deal with.
Dave,
Glad you're enjoying Flare so far!
Some of the disconnect you're seeing between those quests is us testing the modding system. The entire Averguard quest chain and area is a mod. The entire Living Bones/Brothers area is another mod. Because the mods aren't guaranteed to both be there, we don't want them to depend on each other for quest info.
But that's really under the hood stuff. As a player you want the experience smoothed out. Currently we're building a handful of remaining features needed to put together a real full game. These features will make the current alpha/test maps feel old.
We'll likely be creating all new maps and scenarios for the final game. The campaign will be all in one mod, so we can smooth out all of the quest connection issues that you mentioned.
And answers to your technical questions:
I actually don't know if Ubuntu Software Center will notice if Flare is updated. I don't personally maintain that build of the game and I don't have an Ubuntu machine handy.
Version 0.16 is out but hasn't made it to Ubuntu yet. Once read it'll appear in Debian first ( http://packages.debian.org/sid/flare ) and Ubuntu shortly after.
This game is so awesome.
One request: it would be nice if there was a warning, like "you have reached the end of content." I've spent the last three days trying to figure out how to unlock the next area and I guess there is no next area. Argh!
I Finisheed Quest it`s ok well done. I think its quiet easy it should be longer. When whe gonna start new quest??
