Hi folks!
Just wanted to say a big thank you to GameBoom for agreeing to host OGA. What this means for the site is that the $200/month I was paying out of pocket for hosting can all go toward additional art commissions. The machine we're on right now is every bit equal to the old one (if not a bit beefier in terms of processor power), and it's hosted by a great group of people (as opposed to the spam-friendly host I used to have, which was on email blacklists and had hours of unannounced downtime).
On a related note, if you happen to notice some slowness over the next couple of days, please note that we're in the process of getting everything tuned correctly, so there may be a few bumps. The default configuration files that come with CentOS tend to assume that you've got unlimited RAM, so I'm making some adjustments. Hopefully the worst is over. Also, if you run into any errors, please leave a comment here (or contact me with the site contact form) so I can address them quickly.
Peace!
Bart

Sounds like great news to me. Congratulation!
edit: just the Hosted by logo seems a bit too much to me. I hope it doesn't stay that big/prominent in the long run
super thanks! and the hosting logo is hilarious in the ridiculous sense xD
This is actually really good news. I am glad to hear it.
The better server is great! GameBoom is also great for supporting open source gaming (well, it stems from Tremulous after all)! I wish they would keep a larger distance from shareware and freeware (as in beer), but I'm sure OpenGameArt is safe from those influences, so it's okay :).
Udi,
actually OGA is pretty much trying to get interesting for freeware and commercial Indie projects, as you can see on recent blog posts and the new license politic for commissioned art.
remaxim
It's true to some extent. :)
I know that this is something that you (remaxim) don't personally agree with, but I don't see any reason that we can't support indie game studios along with Open Source. Mind you, as I've said in the past, OGA's primary mission will always be for the Open Source community, but making our officially commissioned art CC-BY isn't going to affect FOSS projects in any way, and may bring in additional publicity (and hopefully art submissions!) from indie studios and gamers. And since we will only ever accept licenses that are FSF-approved, it will always serve to expand the archive of art available to FOSS projects.
Remaxim,
allowing CC-BY art is still way more sympathic for me than allowing HL2 or Bioshock appear on the same action games list as OA or WoP (GameBoom does that). So unless tons of proprietary licensed texture sets specifically made and limited to Minecraft or models made for Mount&Blade arrive on OGA, I'm still satisfied.
@ Bart and Udi:
That was actually meant pretty much without any side note ... just that OGA tries to get interesting for indie devs. I guess that is pretty much as far as we can go with the licenses we use, as well as anyone (especially bart) is willing to go.
@ Udi:
Yeah, I talked to the founder of GameBoom about it and it was a pretty heated argument... I am pretty much on your side towards that. It just doesn't work IMO. You can't promote Open source games by comparing them to multi-million-dollar games

That's some great news. Does that mean that you will be able to commission some 3D art too? Would be great!
By the way, the "Donations record" link doesn't work, it points to "internal:/donations", whatever that might be.
