Based on discussion and feedback from the wildly successful OpenGameArt Summer 2018 Game Jam, I'm volunteering to host another OGA Game Jam.
Calling this one 'The Fall All-OGA Game Jam! 2018'
If I put together an itch.io page for it can someone add the top left sidebar and sticky forum links for it on OGA?
Also, does October work as a month for the Jam?
This one will be a slight change from the Summer Game Jams.
For the Fall All-OGA Game Jam, all art/sounds/etc used in an entry must either be already available on OGA or submitted to OGA within a week of the jam submission deadline (that's a week /after/ the submission deadline). Well something like that anyway. I'll try to word it better in the official rules, but the general idea is to use only OGA assets for the games, with the option to create new stuff as needed/desired so long as it's submitted back to OGA under an open license.
Anyone want to volunteer to make a logo/banner for the Jam?
art challenge side-bar is also up now. :)

I definitive join this Jam !
But I have one question, we can take images with a public domain license (ex. wikimedia commons , pixabay) and use as base to make scenes , backgrounds , etc... Those edits are suitable to upload here ?
Sorry for this noobish question and for my bad english. IDK where ask this question.
Regards.
Eyh ! I just join OGA Jam and I'm thinking something good.
@Lt Khorne: I answered your question over on the official jam thread.

@MedicineStorm: It looks great! Other than the title being 'Art Challenge' I don't see any signs that the space is really meant for art challenges.

Would anyone be interested if I was the one hosting the next game jam in a couple of months? It would mainly be just a copy of the last summer one (no "all-OGA" restriction)
Or do you think it's too early yet and we should wait until next summer?
I'd be interested. Not sure if I would have to participate but that is true regardless of when it is run.
I would definitely try to participate. It would be all too fitting for you to host the Spring game jam ;)
If the Summer one is in Jully, then a Spring Jam in March or April wouldn't be too close IMHO.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
ahh, great to know at least a few are interested!!!
@withthelove you have hosted before... Are there any special duties to keep in mind when doing so?
Also, shouldn't we get an art challenge rolling then, so that can be used ? I would even volunteer to host that too ^^
Also, what do you think about the idea of creating a donation pool for prizes? I'd be happy to throw a couple of bucks in there ^^
On the other hand, it may attract people to the jam with no interest in oga at all, who are simply doing it for money, i don't know.
@Spring: I found hosting to be pretty straight forward. itch makes setting the jam really simple. I honestly just copied the description from chasersgaming's last jam and then tweaked it a bit, so for the most part, all the text kind of writes itself. The only real extra work is double checking all the entries to make sure their assets and credit pages are all in good order. Personally, next time I host I am going to add a requirement that the asset credits appear in the game descrption on itch.io. This will make them much easier to check over (since you'll be able to just click the urls on the itch page instead of trying to transcribe them from a credits page). It will also (hopefully) bring more attention to the assets and their creators.
Other than that, I didn't find it too much trouble to host at all. You'll want some banner art, but once you settle on a name I know someone who'd love to help putting that together (hint, hint, he looks alot like me ;)
I don't know about an official prize pool. I agree it might attract the wrong kind of attention, we seem to get quite a few bogus entries every jam as it is (games that clearly don't meet the criteria and are most likely just re-submissions of games created). Also adding money to the mix might create more sour feelings when the results come in.
What I'd love to see is some kind of template for badges that could be given out to the overall winner and the category winners for each jam. Possibly first, second and third place badges for the overall winners. This would be something folks could display proudly and use in promotional materials (banners, etc) for their games.
I tried to make something for the Fall All-OGA Jam and while I think the result came out alright, I'm certain a proper artist could do much better. Also, I got a bit carried up in the 'fall' theming for that badge so it wasn't particularly re-usable. Something with OGA and Sara would probably be more useful.
re: art challenge
I was going to try and run a 'Re-design OGA Home Page' contest but I'm not sure if that would dovetail well with a Spring game jam. Could just do a 'regular' themed art challenge if you wanted.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
I did a WIP, try and see if it works for you or if anything in unclear:

I will probably have to say prizes was a bad idea, so in this draft it says that there are none, but I think it really is better that way. Even though I was the one who aired the thought to begin with :p
I also drew a little sketch, maybe you think it has potential for a banner, or we could try to find a different artist also. If nothing else I know a bunch ;)
But after doing all that I'm feeling a bit exhausted and really need to get off the pc, so I hope it's ok I don't provide such a lenghty reply today :'D

itch won't show me the preview :(
I don't know if you have to make the page public or if there's a way to give access to a list of accounts.
Sketch is good, could maybe use a blue sky and some sun for 'spring' but otherwise it looks great. Fun to see Sara in regular people clothes :)

I was deliberately going for something modern rather than medieval with Sara here ^^ and you were right, the blue background does make a difference and looks a bit better!

cool! another jam, and coll that a 'Spring' jam by hosted by 'Spring' :)
loving the Sara banner!
some good advice fom @withthelove, its not to teduis to host, itch ,makes it pretty straight forward. what is tedious is checking every entry at the end of the submission period, that all have the right credits and ahered to the rules etc. there will be some 'iffy entrys', which is a given, your have to sort of investigate thoses and make a decision on them, whether to disqualify/take out or not. You will need to make yourself available aswell to incoming questions, which i have no doubt you will get. im hoping to have community pages better set up later this year. (most ask questions or whatever), so if you can do that, that may help you and other participants.
Good luck Spring, look forward to it!.
oh, in order for your itch preview page to show via the link you will need to 'publish' the page, but publish it as 'Unpublished', that way your link will work but wont show up on any results in any itch p[ages. :)

Ahh thanks chasersgaming! I hope there will be at least a bit of interest. It seems easy enough to work with itch like you say ^^ not ready to publish yet though.
I took the liberty of adding an optional theme based on my own completely selfish desire for what I want to see. Right now it's
"I Enjoy my Life"
but we can of course instead call some sort of vote on what it should be if any of you have some other ideas ^^
oh, yes, about iffy entries, I hope I can ask for some second opinions from you and withthelove, being earlier hosts, should it be neccessary (and I figure it will). Of course the management I will handle myself tho ^^
"Second opinions"
of coarse, not a proble, il check through them anyway I'm sure, I did with the fall jam, if I find anything il let you know, and then you can do as you wish with the info.:)
"completely selfish desire"
your the host, it is YOUR jam, your taking the time and effort to do it, so do what you want to do, if you can get a benefit from it then why not.;)

Some comments:
Is it an all OGA Jam?
Is the voting for participants only? Just for reference, I opened the last one up to anyone and I thought it worked out ok. It expands the pool of voters and allows people to participate even if they don't have time to make a game.
Any interest in moving it to April? I was hoping to run the Art Challenge in March.
I would change #5 to read:
5) You must credit the authors of every art asset you use, including yourself. This credit must be included in TWO places:
1) an in-game credits screen of some sort, which must be accessible from the very beginning of the game
2) in the game description text on itch.io
If you distribute the game as a downloadable file collection (Zip archive or Installer EXE, etc.), please also include a README or CREDITS text file that contains appropriate credits for the assets used.
Hint: You may use OGA's "collection" feature to generate a credits file.
Actually, to be honest, I would recommend just copying the credits rule from the Fall-All OGA jam and adding a blurb about listing the credits on the itch.io page. Not because I love my own pretty prose and/or dislike yours in any way, but I did get a lot of positive feedback about that rule. Especially the way it included an example of an appropriate credit. And in the end, virtually every submission included credits in the same form as the example which helped quite a bit when verifying them.
And sorry, I know I'm beating this 'require credits on itch.io page' bit to death, but I really do think it'll make things much easier for you in the end.
Love the theme! And chasersgaming's right, if you're running the Jam, you defiinitley get to pick the theme! It's the lone reward for all your efforts. :)

Here's a first draft of turning your pic into a banner logo for the jam.
Including the logo and speech bubble as separate items in case anyone wants to play with their coloring and/or placement.
I tried to go kind of light and fun with the logo, hope that carries through some.
I did have another thought on the sketch as I did this. You might try making the grey mountains shorter and maybe a bit brighter. The color is a tad drab and it really fills up most of the image, taking some of the energy away. Maybe use a hazey blue instead of a grey? Also, the mountains are so tall, they kind of tower over Sara and distract from her a bit. I think if you made them smaller it'll draw attention to Sara.

Alright, so I've made some changes to the rules, the banner picture and the dates, basically doing most of the stuff you wanted x'D
I was definitely thinking of making it all-OGA, I actually thought that way worked better than not, perhaps even better than expected.
We should also think about finding an artist who can do the badges maybe? I can try it myself, but I'm not that good, I still would though ^^
https://itch.io/jam/9140/preview
new banner looks great!
when I get a moment, I'll try and go back and add some balloon shading to the lettering just to give it some pop.
For rule #5, and I know I'm really flogging the dead horse now, but maybe swap:
You must do this via a 'Credits' menu on your title screen where you show a list.
with
You must do this via a 'Credits' menu on your title screen where you show a list AND in the game description text on itch.io.
> I was definitely thinking of making it all-OGA
cool, I agree I think it worked out quite well in the end.
> We should also think about finding an artist who can do the badges maybe?
When I get a chance, I'll do a search on OGA to see if there isn't something cool already up here that we could use as the basic framework for badges.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
All OGA is the future right now, as far as I see ^^ it helps getting people to visit and use the site, I hope.
I'll try and find the perfect wording about those credits you crave a little bit later, I think what you are suggesting might be just a teensy weeensy bit too excessive :')
And let me know if you find anything good for badges, otherwise I'll be ready to draw some myself too! I also know many artists who would surely help (even if not all for free) :)
Hello everybody.
As a new jam is coming, I am just reminding about 2 topics in related to this :
- In this topic, you can give ideas to developpers, or, if you are a developper participating to the game jam, but you do not have ideas for your game, you can take one from here
- If you made a game, you can, after finishing it, participate to my "arcade art challenge" and draw an arcade machine of your game. Arcade machines representing games from previous jams are also accepted, of course.
Have fun. I do not know if I will be ready for this jam or the next one, but I will be on the fall game jam for sure. I will put a "Phoenix Hunt" easter egg in my next game ;-)
oooh, now that Arcade Art challenge makes sense!
I'll have to make some cabinet for my old jam games, that sounds like fun!
