I've been playing FLARE since the earlier versions and I've always found the game a little...dull. Don't get me wrong, I love the game, it just still has work to do. Mainly dealing with sound and graphics.Other than that, it's perfect. I hope FLARE grows a lot.
So what I'm doing is starting a mod called FLARE: Enhanced. Or something along those lines. So far I've edited pretty much the whole soundtrack, raised the level cap to 30 (to start with), and have begun retexturing the game.
All the actions in the game sound beefed up and there's way more satisfaction hearing the sound of any enemy die from a Crit., to hear the sound of your weapon/spell rip their body apart (for lack of less morbid words).I've also started to add some original music that I've written (not done with that part yet).
Also, I'm retexturing pretty much the whole game (including the UI) to look a little more varied and like a fantasy world. This part is not nearly done yet.
I also want to add new maps, skills, quests, and lots of new features. (still waiting to find good tutorials).
Here is the download link...try it out! [Work in progress]

Lots of thins aren't finished; the start menu picture is just a placeholder, but it's in the direction I'm wanting to go with it.
If you want to help out, give feedback, or ask questions...go ahead!
UPDATE: December 21, new download link. Most of the enemies have been retextured and bosses now have their own textures. Epic weapons/armor now have better textures and glow. Subtle changes made to the tileset. The game is also more challenging. Now with some class balances and harder boss battles (they feel like actual bosses now). Names of many enemies have been changed.
Screenshots do not do much justice at this point.
Let me know which menu screen you like best. Menu 1 is what's enabled. You can change it yourself to menu 2 to see how it looks.
I haven't had a chance to download your actual mod yet, because I'm multitasking morning tasks already, but I'm looking forward to it!
I know that most Open Source projects have more coders than they do artists, which is one of the reasons why OpenGameArt was created, I think (I've only been around here for less than a year). Are you willing to release any work you do under a FLARE compatible license, and maybe post any modified artwork here as well? It'd definitely help out the game and the entire community that way.
Lastly, it is still in alpha, and I don't know what grand designs Clint has for the art direction. A lot of artwork has already been added or revamped between 0.17 and 0.18- for instance, there are many new icons, several new armor sets, and the item slots have been chopped up into smaller pieces -arms, legs, shoes, chest, etc. Check in at the latest version, at https://github.com/clintbellanger/flare-game, to get an idea of how the latest assets look, and where the best gaps to fill are.
Sure thing! I was planning on releasing more and more versions of this as FLARE progresses. And I'll definitely post modified artwork, too. That's another main thing I want to acomplish with this. Hopefully it does help the community a little.
Thanks for the response.
I'm assumig I need to speak with Clint Bellanger about the Flare compatible license?
Because FLARE is licensed under the GPL, really "FLARE compatible" would just mean GPL 3.0, CC-BY 3.0 (which I think is the current preferred license) CC-BY-SA 3.0, or CC0(public domain).
Have you thought about instead of creating a fork to try to contribute directly to it? I am not sure how your ideas work together with Clints prefered direction, but I think one enhanced version is much nicer then two versions with special enhancements in different directions.
I did. If he wants this to be apart the actual game, then I'll contribute to that. If not, it'll stay as an addon, which is fine too.
I really think you should go with the addon , unless you are writing new code. I was making a small dungeon addon myself a while back but I lost all the data : (
That's what I was thinking, this would work a lot better as an addon. However, depending on how much is possible with the engine (and I find tutorials) I'd like to add new maps, quests, new spells, crafting, and the list goes on... I have a lot of ideas.
Characters on menu screen comes from Final Fantasy:

I'm afraid that other art may be borrowed from other games too.
I know, it's just a placeholder, don't worry. That's my next concern
What other art are you talking about?
Hi,
is it possible to download without registering at 4shared?
I'd really like to try out the mod as the screenshots look great :)
The link is now on Mediafire. Enjoy ^^
