Synth orchestra

Synth orchestra

What are some good synths for mimicking an orchestra sound? Best case these are synths that have the overall qualities of orchestral instruments rather than straight-up synth violin, synth trombone, etc.

I won't be too picky on having individual instruments because that sounds both too difficult and low payoff, so how about we just look at the groups broadly:

Woodwind

Brass

Percussion

String

(Keyboard optional)

Now, percussion and keyboard have pretty easy roles to determine and even in total synth/techno/electronica, synth drums are pretty much kosher, so let's focus on the other three.

The basic relationship as I understand it is that strings are the "softest" instruments and brass are the "strongest", with woodwind in between, meaning that you use strings prominently for lower intensity and brass for high intensity (climax), so with my very limited knowledge on the subject, I would suggest that basic waveforms might be something along the lines of:

String: sine

Woodwind: triangle/square

Brass: square/sawtooth

But I'd rather not end up with music that sounds like NES chiptunes. :)

So if anybody has any better/more informed thoughts on how to emulate an orchestral-sounding orchestration (lol) or can point to some cool synth plugins that sound nice (preferably cheap/free; I have a very limited budget), I'd appreciate the input.
