apparantly not all foss mascots are open content. i first found out about it many years ago while reading a discussion about having beastie on freedoom. accoriding to one of the developers the character is proprietary. wikipedia seems to agree
i do like the pterosaurs from jp 3 a lot. i was inspired by the tried and true specevo tradition of flightless pterosaurs. i am not sure what i will base the walk on yet. i've been combing trough palaeo twitter for reference, but no luck yet. i did watch some videos of walking orangutans that seemed intriguing tho.
i thought by limiting myself to just the sillohuete i would be able to come up with more readable designs. then somewhere along the way i chickened out and added faces
edit
just uploaded the second collection. pack now has 50 critters
also got started on the third collection
lookin at them now i fear my designs might start becoming redundant. hopefully carefully referencing real animals will lessen the problem
i like the silhouette, but i'm not sure if it will work with the other angles. if possible i would like at least three of the legs to be visible in all angles during walk animation
thanks friends, here is a look at the process. the sketch is made with the krita pixel brush set to 5 pixels wide and with pressure sensitivity for width enabled. once a basic shape is made i use the standard pixel brush
i feel like my sprites lose a lot when moving from the sketch stage to the finished form
anyway here is the current second collection
does submitting the sprites as a single sheet make the submission less useful? also is it better to post them with a white background or a transparent one?
something bothers me about the rotation. i think it looks like the wing shape is changing as it turns around
the small one was my attempt at making a mantis, i really hate looking at it now XD
here is a super rough sketch for a retro fps rotation, some sort of flightless pterosaur dude
the plan was to do the whole thing by hand to learn pixel art, but i am having a lot of trouble figuring out the proportions so i might cheat and make a little prop i can photograph
here is another retro fps rough wip, some sort baloon drone
for comparison kiki is said to be licensed as cc-by sa and gnu gpl in the official krita page
https://krita.org/en/about/kiki/
the kde mascots also appear to be open content
https://community.kde.org/Promo/Material/Mascots
i am not sure about tux, the description referenced below sounds like attribution is all that is needed
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tux_(mascot)#cite_note-12
tuz however is confirmed to be ccby sa here

oh, when does that challenge start?

what i meant is if i should cut them up and zip them up? and if so should they be with white background or transperent?
like this
or like this
