O_o It turns out if you use water caustic intensities as a height map, with a few ripple functions you can actually use these to create the ribbony-effects of aurora borealis! Imagine that?! I implemented this in a ray marcher and they are now part of a-starry-sky, https://github.com/Dante83/A-Starry-Sky, when the user enable aurora borealis.
