godot is really picking up speed, easy to use, you can use c# and GD script and others I believe 2D and 3D
i've tried a bunch of engines and made game engines and made games with all of them but Godot is just fantasic, straight to the point and gets you going without a worry.
Love the original artwork, but there was no character animation.
Did a simple anim for this Knight to walk and i will do sword anim when i can.
!!missing north west and north east at the moment. done!
Anyone can use and shout if anything looks off, as i bashed it out quick and not animated in a while.
Updated 27/6/17 - frames are 32 x 32, this could be reduced but thought it might allow for a sword/shield animation. 3 frames for each North, North East, East, South East, South, South West, West and North West.
in answers to pagie_ question 'Graphicsgale' is free to download and pretty sweet program.
Just to clear up I did not make the original wonderful looking sprite art, at top of the post Buch did. I just hacked the frames to get directions out of it.

C# is the one, if you know C# then all other languages can be figured out, well except C++ don't try C++

hello polecat
start small 16 x 16 get some experience, then move on to 32 x 32 and 64 x 64
while there is a call for larger works as you've added above, most games use smaller sprites, even maps are made up of smaller re-usable parts.
keep at it you'll get there
Sparrow
used these as a base to make mine, thanks
