One idea might be to just pick a location...Ancient Egypt, Italy, Island Paradise.  Just trying to think of things where music/sfx would fit in just as well as visual art--many themes lend themself to one or the other.

I think it is more a reflection of how music is today...it is so much easier now to produce music than it was 15 years ago--a lot more people are making music on their computers--so people need to compete to get noticed.  I totally agree that it's bs though, I don't get why a song needs to be judged as better than others or not because that just narrows the field as far as creativity.  I'm not really a competitive person, I more just find making music a relaxing exercise and I'd rather share it than let it sit on my harddrive.  To answer your question, I don't know of any websites like the one you are describing :/ . I've dabbled in remixing songs but never really completely finished a remix.

TBH I enter the OGA competitions because I really want the community to get into it.  It hasn't totally caught on but I see it more as an opportunity for the site to generate more free assets of a specific theme.  With OGA at least the game devs in need of assets benefit too.

I'd love to check out your remixes, you have a link?

I'm having trouble making edits to a song I made.  When I hit "save" nothing happens.  The loading icon doesn't even come up.  This has happened before I'm not sure why.

Awesome!  Super excited to participate, should be a fun one for sure.

I really tried to get a submission in, I had a song started that was really fitting with the theme I thought.  Unfortunately with my schedule right now, 1 week isn't enough time for me to finish a song, at least one that would be up to my standards and that I could be proud of.

I think that having one week to make something is a little easier to achieve for some art styles than others.  For example, making a really detailed 3D model or a decently-mixed/mastered song can take a while.  My suggestion would be to perhaps make this a monthly thing--it may be easier to be consistent if a new challenge is introduced on the first of the month and then we have the submission time be later on in the month--maybe at the 3 week point, then voting for the last week of the month.

If the goal of these challenges is to generate more quality art assets for the site, I think allowing people to take their time and make sure their submission is exactly the way they want it may get more people involved.  I just think having such a short amount of time either A) scares people away who would want to participate because they feel they can't finish something in a week, or B) encourages rushed art that may not have realized its full potential.

This is just my 2 cents, not trying to criticize.  I could see a few downsides to my idea as well.  Anyway, I think these challenges are AWESOME and they really give me a reason to explore new avenues of creativity that I probably wouldn't have normally, so thanks for that :)

Here is my entry, a recreation of a classical song by Beethoven.

Is this challenge meant to be for music as well?

Hey, I've only toyed around with Blender, so I don't have all the answers, but I do know one thing about making models that is very important and can distinguish a "good" model from a "dirty" one is the amount of vertices.  Having a lot of needless vertices makes for a high poly model, which tends to be computationally inefficient.  So it is often better to make fewer faces and apply smoothing with a subsurface modifier or something similar than to try to make a really detailed model.  Also, making your model out of only quads seems to be the preferred way by professionals.  Having tris I guess can mess with how the normals look and can cause there to be errors.  Like I said, I'm not a pro, but I did get into Blender pretty heavily for about 6 months.

Just want to say I support this idea.  I've definitely had songs submitted that probably had potential but were buried and not given attention because I submitted them at the wrong time and other art immediately overshadowed them.

It's not really a "must have" for me, but if people are uploading their hard work for free, it seems fair to give the artists a good chance for their work to be seen.

There could even be a dynamically-sized section labeled "Art submitted today" or "Art submitted this week," which shows everything submitted in their respective time frames.  It could be put at the bottom of the main page, or really just its own section somewhere else, since I understand keeping the main page free of too much clutter is a priority, and if nothing was submitted that day, it could be hidden so as to not make the site look barren.

That's just my two cents.
