Hey Tatermand, I am going to use this :-) Originally I wanted a more pixel-arty style like http://opengameart.org/content/shmup-ships but I really dig your subsmission, its awesome! I love the clean, detailed style and the fact that the ships can be configured.
Although impudent, I would like to request a few things (things that are missing from the other stuff I wanted to use thus far as well). For the record, I am building a space RTS game based on carrier warfare, think World War 2 Pacific Theater with large carrier groups operating fighter squadrons. No base building involved.
art requirements for my game:
I need some capital ships in the same style as fighters, ideally really large (like 10 times the size) with rotatable turrets
I need explosions... of course you need to blow up ships :-) With the pixel-art style, I had lots and lots of explosions to choose from but if I use something with this detail, I need something that matches the style. My ideal conception would actually be ship-specific explosions with ship-specific debris. For capital ships, I had planned to do something like Wing Commander 3 did, with the capship burning out and being reduced to a floating husk. Problem with this ship-specific explosion thing is that one probably needs variants as well to avoid the battle from looking repetitive. (Game engine has been build with this in mind already and supports the feature)
nice-to-haves:
I would require a few more asteroid types (actual variations, not recolors), specifically some bigger ones
some alternative starfields would be nice (to simulate another stellar system)
missiles, beams and blasts, though these are definitly lowest on the list as there is lots of art appropriate to go with yours.
more ships of course
ships of a different style, which could be used as another race / faction
This work is wonderful and exactly what I need for the game I am working on. Guess I should think about hiring you in the near future (in half a year or so) to do some similar assets.
Great work, bookmarking and making a mental note, keep up the good work :-)
If you make characters, could you consider including diagonal poses as well? LPC and all the other entries usually only use the standard Up-Down-Left-Right concept from the first Zelda.
Mention MillionthVector seems to have gone on a spaceship rush... ...if he now starts to produce fightercraft for all the races released thus far, I will be thrilled :-)

Please do not feel obliged to do any of this :-)
ahh, good memories. I loved this game, in fact the first game I ever modded (I was 10)

Lovely.

awesome :-) The OpenGameArt community thanks you.
GPL is kind of a weird license for graphics, I never fully understood how this applies to non-source code things.
Any chance this might be released under any of the creative commons licenses as well (or public domain while we are at it ;-) )
Anyway, I really like the preview screenshot. Awesome work :-)
very "mass-effecty"

just checking, no worries.
Good work by the way, maybe I could use this for my RTS game.
as far as I know, Flare stuff is usually under some Creative Commons 3.0 license, is this public domain release okay?
Thanks. When developing games, you always pick up new skills.
Still, it is nowhere near enough...
