I have ideas running through my head and can't make up my mind. I want to give Redshrike something to animate and I have no idea what to do! Please give me your feedback and any ideas on what you want to see next:
Please share your thoughts in this thread. I really want to know what would be helpful for any current projects, especially if you're wishing for something that doesn't exist.
Side note: The wolf animation I had made was for my game but also because makrohn said he could use it.
Orc is more-or-less done already, via Marcel's work, which can be found in the Universal Sprite sheet. Some of the head bobbing doesn't work correctly, though, so I think if someone could put some time into making the head more compatible with the remainder of the sprite sheet, that'd go a long way. The Orc is based off of one of Redshrike's designs.
A dragon might be a little too big to be very useful - I think a lizard would go a longer way.
Again, Skeletons are in the Universal Sprite Sheet.
I'd love a flying creature or two - harpy is a cool idea, melee for talons, plus a scream or something for ranged.
Any and all Golems would be awesome.
@makrohn
By orc or goblin I meant something like these: 10 Basic RPG enemies: the goblin supplement
By skeleton type things I meant something like these: Fossil (Undead) RPG Enemy Sprites
By dragon or lizard I meant exactly what it sounds like. Redshrike already made one animated dragon and it's pretty big but thought I'd include it just in case anyone had an idea.
Flying creatures would be great, I get images in my head of wyverns from Dragon Warrior I and harpies from many different places.
Golems that Redshrike made previously are just bad ass and deserve to be mentioned and considered for animation.
Snakes Snails or Nagas since they are easier to animate (at least I think they are). Or some kind of floating spirits : )
Good suggestions. Animated snakes have already been done to some extent. In the base assents there is a snake moving animation in 4 directions. I suppose expanding it to include attacking, biting, and other movements might be appropriate: Base LPC Assets
The only snail I've seen on OGA is this one (not in LPC style, not sure how useful a snail would be to be honest):Snail
The naga Redshrike did looks pretty awesome. It could be made LPC and animated with some success but not sure how usefu or usable it would be. Not exactly a common encounter outside of sea or water environments: 3 RPG enemy remixes
I have made snail. It does not have LPC palette, but it is anyway suitable for 32x32 tiles.

Indeed you did! Sorry I missed it. I've looked at your stuff before too, I used your bush in my plant repack. Goes to show there's a lot of stuff on this site that goes undiscovered until people start talking about it.
One word about Nagas. Nagas are not water only creatures. Nagas' being water creatures are imposed by Warcraft. There is only one Naga that is very well known and lives in a river (or sort). Rest generally lives in other dimensions.
You're right. I had never read about Naga before you brought that up but Naga are not water creatures. They're snake-like things.
From Wikipedia
Pretty interesting to read about that.
When I said "Snails" I mean some kind of BAD ASS spiked caparpace laser eye shooting type pf snail (heck even a "normal" one might be usefull as a low level monster).
Anything with tracks , weels or floating can be easly animated as well.
for rpg's when the hero is very weak, having beating a snail is good for xp.
Redshrike was kind enough to make a sampler of possible sprites and wants to offer it as a preview of potential animations. I'm leaning kind of hard toward the spider, ice golem, and goblin because they're pretty generic and useful on the whole.
From left to right (in case you haven't looked through Redshrike's stuff as much as me):
* Wartotaur
* Dirg
* Spider
* Ice golem
* Rat king
* Goblin
* Hellhound-type things
Share your thoughts please!

Holy crap ... those look great : )
I totally dig the spider and golem as well. Spiders are great and alomost all rpg's have them.
I vote for the Wartotaur, Dirg, Ice Golem, or spider.
Let's set aside the spider for the time being because that's a must. What is the next thing we should animate? Does anyone want to put their thoughts down on this? More comments from the same people or new people are welcome.
A full goblin race would be quite nice, but thats a bit stretch.
These all look excellent. I specially like about goblin and golem.
I'll let you all in on a little secret. I'm going to ask Redshrike to animate most of these at some point. The purpose of this discussion is to figure out what the order will be to make them. I'm leaning toward this order so far (based in feedback and how generic/useful things are):
If something might be useful to you sooner rather than later I'm willing to work on it first. If you come up with a different order, different stuff, more stuff, or whatever, please share with me. I'm looking for as much feedback on this as I can get because everything Redshrike makes is going on OGA under a CC-BY license. It's to everyone's benefit to say what they want because they might just get it!
By the way I've been tinkering with some color swapping. The imp Redshrike made for me is on the left, two varieties of recoloring are on the middle and right. This is a programmic recoloring, no direct human interaction went into recoloring this besides writing a simple recoloring script and running the picture through it.
How usable are the middle and right sprites? Are they usable at all?

Spider... so we could recreate this scene:

The middle looks good, the right one seems a bit dark.
How about these? Same ones on top with lighter on bottom (added 40 to each color value programmically). I could selectively darken certain bits like the outline and maybe adjust the coloring a bit to fix the faded look but as an automated recolor is it close enough to be useful?
imp_recolors_2.png 10.7 Kb [4 download(s)]
Those feel close to the DawnBringer palette. The blue definitely looks better, and the green and orangish colors are usable.
So I took the outline from the darker blue (black edge, hornes, eyes, etc.) and applied it to the lightened version. Does blue look like it matches the red and green in brightness? could they all be useful in the same area together is my main interest.
imp_recolors_3.png 5.5 Kb [1 download(s)]
Yep, it seems pretty close. The green may be a bit brighter. My screen isn't calibrated or anything, so it could be my screen.
Expect some recolored imps in the near future ;)
You can try to mix colors a bit into different directions . Something like : if red value < 100 . greenvalue = redvalue + 20; else bluevalue = red- 20.......
Playing around with something like this can generate some sweet variations
So adjusting brightness of green down and blue up, this is what I end up with.
imp_recolors_4.png 5.3 Kb [1 download(s)]
That look really good. It acentuates the shadows, or something.
That's exactly what I was thinking. I don't know what exactly it did but it looks better to me.
I'm going to recolor the imp I have with that version of green and blue. It'll take a bit to make a dark outline for all the blue ones and all the equipment variations but it shouldn't be to bad. Hopefully I can finish at least one color tonight.
I surprised myself and did both in one night!

So, as William has mentioned we're starting off with the spider. I figure that, since we have this thread here, I might as well post some preliminary gifs as the work gets done.
So, so far I've done two animations on the front view:
Spider walk:
Spider bite:
Sweet!
Awesome!
Welp, he's dead.
Awe, poor little spider just wanted to play...
In case anyone needs me, I won't be able to respond until Sunday. I'll be in Switzerland and won't have internet until I get back.
Cheers.
@Redshrike
How's that spider coming? By the way, when you're done I'm interested in getting a golem started. Let me know the details over email when you can. Thanks!
If anyone knows a good LPC tile artist or is a good enough tile artist to replace Sharm let me know. I'm interested in pickingup with some stuff where she had to stop. Don't care where you are in the world or if your English skills are broken, I need a good tile artists.
If you speak something else we can try to figure something out.
Funny you mention the spider. I just got the draft of back walking giff-ified (and, of course, the statifc back view as part of that)
Next biting, then side view (and, of course, as usual this and all images here are open to any comments/changes/whatever).
Looks great so far! Reminds me of the beetle a little but that's okay. It's different enough from the beetle that it's obviously something else so I don't mind.
Still, let me know how you're doing on funding and when you start class over email so I can have a little better idea how much time I have to get some other artwork done that goes with this lovely spider and eventually a golem.

Edit: would you like multi-directional death, or just the front?
Good music, thanks for the link.
Single direction should be enough for now. If I change my mind later or someone needs it we can figure it out as long as I have the PSD file.
Alrighty, sounds good to me.
Now, the side view, and side walking
I'll send more detailed time info over email when the last animation and formatting are done, but suffice to say that currently we're totally good on the funding front.
That is an awesome looking spider. If you get a chance at the end to make a red, green, blue, and silver-ish recolor it'll save me the effort. I really appreciate all the hard work and dedication you've shown me. Keep it going man, you're doing great!
Thanks man! And here's the side bite:
Because the abdomen mostly doesn't rotate in frames it should be pretty easy to make variations on it, in patterning and in shape as well.
Wow, great work Red! They looks so fluid!
When you get done with the spider I'll post it up here on OGA and you can start on the golem animation. I'm thinking 64x64 like your sample shows would look really good. Think I'll need standing, attacking, some kind of casting-like animation, and dying (only 1 direction is okay). Sound good?
And the spiders are done! Check out the awesome handy work Redshrike made here:
http://opengameart.org/content/lpc-spider
I'm having Redshrike start on the golem next. Now is a good time to chime in if you want to see something after the golem.
How could I have missed this topic? Seriously, those spiders look epic. I just fav'd them. ^^
Personally, I'd like four-directional deaths myself (on all sprites) but just one is fine for the moment. For example, on the character sprites, I planned to use full map animations (I won't use separate battle sprites at all) and I think it'd be neat having characters and monsters/beasts (I won't use the term "monster" in my series) fall down in the direction they are currently pointing.
Of note, I like the idea of Golem next, too. The Ice Golem looks cool, though eventually I'd like to see a stone/lava golem (well, it'd be a "stone" golem with lava basically acting as veins). The first form of the final boss for one of my games I have in mind is a lava golem (at least the outside anyway...) If others are made I may use them elsewhere, too, though.

For the record, the reason for a lack of side and back death animations in the base was twofold. First, I was running behind in getting the base done and all animations polished before the LPC was ready to launch, so some cuts were made.
The other more compelling one is that a falling animation requires a lot more animating. Things like hats, which can be C/Ped for most frames, have to be animated with multiple unique frames in the fall, which adds a lot of work, especially for less experienced pixel artists. So while it wouldn't be too hard to add those poses to the base, it would be a real pain to expand all of the accessories to fit them.
Ah, that's fine, I can understand the complexity and difficulty of that. While I'd like to see four-directional death animations, one is fine.
