This is a public domain recording of The Planets, Op. 32, a well-known orchestral suite written in 1914-1916 by Gustav Holst. For most, I suspect it needs no introduction. For everyone else, you've probably heard parts of it without even realizing.
This particular version was performed by The United States Air Force Heritage of America Band. Unfortunately, it's not complete- it's missing Saturn and Neptune- and the quality is not the best. However, it is the only version I know of that is in the public domain.
Comments
I've been looking for a public domain recording of this for ages! Thanks!
If there's interest, I'll try to track down public domain recordings of other famous (and maybe not so famous) pieces.
Oh yeah there is interest!
imo - The Planets almost certainly inspired much of the original Star Wars music by John Williams.
Classic Classical
A lot of Classical music still gets used today in popular movies without most ever realising it. (due to it being well placed background music)
bring it on. :)
god damn it - somebody wake up hicks..
Actually the reverse is correct. Star wars was inspired by the planets. :P (Yes I know this comment is super old, but I'd rather people have *correct* information)
No no no! You have that backward: Heads I win, tails you lose. (you guys are in agreement: The Planets inspired Star Wars music. Star Wars music was inspired by The Planets)
Read it wrong lol. :)
The full suite is in archive.org
