I'll probably participate in this.
I'll definitely participate in this. Who knows if I'll actually be able to submit something playable, but I'm already itching to start working on my entry.
--Medicine Storm
Look forward to seeing your entry's!,
dont worry if you do not finish your game fully, you should submit it anyway, perhaps right 'demo' in brackets after your games name.
unfinished games can inspire many people, and as the focus is the assets used it will be really cool to see what ideas participants me up with, even if there just a concept. :)
although this is a after thought really, just because this is a 'Game Jam' doesn't mean it has to be a game, it could be a story book, or even a film.
as long as it uses the the minimum amount of assets required by the rules and can be submitted for voting then it's all good!
:)

I'm prepping to make an old-school Final Fantasy-ish mini-RPG. ^^ I know it's a super-difficult thing to try, but I need a sandbox break, and SNES JRPGs were my first love. :rubs hands:
I'm really looking forward to seeing what the rest of you come up with! We're already up to 36!
What exactly do you mean by 2 assets from 3 categories? What are considered to be categories?
DuoQ Bois
@DuoQ - I asked the same thing earlier.
He means at six assets-- at least two from three different categories. So, two from the OGA 2d category, two assets from music, two from textures, ect. That's a minimum, of course.
I mean to do 2d art, music, and sound effects-- which is probably the standard package for 2d games. :P The category list shows up if you hover over the 'Browse' menu.
There are 7 total searchable art categories on OGA:
Documents is mostly used as a catch-all category for weird resources that don't really fit into the other 6; some of the fonts, photoshop brushes, code tools. It's pretty small, so I doubt many people will successfully use anything from that category.
--Medicine Storm
thats correct, sorry I should of maybe explained that somewhere, my first time doing a game jam, so im learning bit by bit, :)
thanks @ElizaWy & @medicinestorm for clearing that up.

if we can use a minimum of two assets from each category then does that mean we can use as many we want as long as we met the minimum requirement?
Yep. :) Minimum only!
the more the better! :)

I'm going to try this. Honestly, I'm much more likely to wash out of a longer jam than a short one, but I'll try to keep it reasonable.
it does seem a long time, but the idea is that it will give everyone a chance to participate in the jam by allowing them to set some time away from their already busy work load, or novice coders like me who may need that extra time. :)
you could start later in the jam if you want, and set your own timing challenge, 3 days, 1 week within the 4 weeks that it runs, its up to you.
good luck, look froward to seeing your project!
:)

I totally agree with chasersgaming. I always wanted to take part in a jam, but being a novice with no experience of a jam, I didn't want to jump headfirst into a Ludum Dare. This jam provides an excellent opportunity to novices. Though the summers might have just started in the west, here in the east, our holidays are going to end two days after the jam starts. And then we have a week full of tests. So I am in favour of this time limit!
I was going to do a platformer, but I took a game jam to the knee.
Was in the middle of planning something, maybe a jam will force me to actually finish something.
Yeah, I'll join; might be fun. Coupla questions:
Does art we submit during the jam count?
What about art we submitted before the jam?
Can I create any type of game?
what exactly is the art challenge theme?
Does the game have to be complete, or can we make a demo?
May I stick a link to my patreon page in the game?
What's the max rating we can have (AO,M,T,E)?
How do I know if I've joined?
I'll start collecting some resources.

Does art we submit during the jam count?
You can use any 'Asset' (artwork, music etc) for your game, as long as you have permission to do so. So you can use your own assets if you want whether its submitted here or not, but you MUST use a minium of 6 assets from OGA itself, 2 from at least 3 categories(i.e, 2 assets from 2D artwork, 2 from Music and 2 from Sound effects). You also must follow the license attributions as you normally would, in other words, credit the author of the asset you use. The more you use from OGA the better your voting score will probably be.
What about art we submitted before the jam?
like i have mentioned above you can use any asset, so it makes no difference if it was submitted on OGA 10 years ago or last week,if its an asset from OGA, than its all good. :) any work you have used but its not on OGA, then feel free to submit it.
Can i create any type of game?
of coarse!, what ever you want, it doesn't have to be a game, maybe a book, or something else, as long as it can be submitted to the jam and voted on. but please stick to the rules of no Racism, politics and what not. :)
What is the art challenge theme?
it is assets that have been created by artists based on the art challenge set by Dannorder which have a theme. you can base your game on the themes or use the assets and get bonus votinf criteria, the links are on the jam page. :)
https://itch.io/jam/opengame-art-game-jam
Does the game have to be complete?
We all would like to have a finished game, but sometimes its not always possible for whatever reasons. If you feel you cant make a full game, then just make a demo if you want, or even if you dont finish, still submit, we want to see what you guys and girls do with the assets, just make a note in the comments about it, but try and have something playable though.
May i stick a link to my patreon?
Its your game, i dont see why not, be up to the player if they check it or not.:)
Whats the max rating?
its a 5 star system, more stars the better.
Hope that helps. :)

Thanks for answering my questions.
I did join, but all that happend was the number of participants increased.
I was actually asking about ESRB rating, what kind of content/innuendo/maturity is allowd.
My project is mainly a 3d platformer, but I tend to use innuendos and entendres with great vigor.
Where do we post/submit games/progress?

The jam does not start until Saturday 1st July, so you cannot submit anything yet, you can only join. once it starts that you will be able to submit project. You cannot start any coding/programming until the jam starts, but any planning you want to do before is fine, writing, collecting assets, creating assets, storyboarding etc.
Ideally I would like the material to be clean, in order for this to be open to all ages, so maybe it could encourage younger audiences into asset creation, or programming, however i dont want to discourage any sort of creativity, theres nothing wrong with blood and gore or horror and violance in games,(i love em) but it has to appeal to the right audience, its not something that i can police, and dont want to, its a game jam on itch so they will have there own policys on what age users should be,with that said i would ask if your game/project has such material then maybe a warning of some kind to let the user know of potential content, but this is really down to you guys making the game really. No games that could cause offense, racist etc, or discriminates, anything blatently offensive would be removed should there be complaints, but im hoping i wont need to do that and this game jam can be enjoyed by everybody. :)
the hash tag for twitter is #ogagamejam if you want to use it, il be happy to repost them but ive only got a few followers. :)
you could probably start a blog post somewhere maybe here, indie DB or other sites like that, thats up to you. ;)

And... start!
81 people in the jam. Holy cow... you guys are awesome. :D See you soon!
Is there any way someone can put this Danorder guys links and stuff all in one convenient spot for us? I can't find this anywhere. help IR dum.

Danorder was the one who'd originally talked about getting this going, but he hasn't been involved in a while. Busy, probably... which is a pity. Chasersgaming is hosting this now, and I've been following / assisting some, so I can answer most questions.
All the important info is on this thread, the itch.io description, and maybe a bit on this one other forum thread, which is what we used to plan the thing. :) Anything in particular you were looking for?
well, where can I find these "themes"? Might be good to put that right on the front page of things. Maybe even on the jam page itself for ease. Also where are the asset categories? Do I just use any assets from OGA?
Beginner game designer. Story writer. D&D nerd. Professional Slacker
The 'themes' are on the front page of the jam, so is the art. :)
Themes from previous Art Challenges are:
Underground / PD Quick / Surt's Scraps / Share the Love / Science / Reborn
And the assets created for them can be found here:
Art Challenge Collection
the asset catagories are in the 'Browse' tab at the top of the OGA home page.
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
We can only use an asset from here, right?
https://opengameart.org/content/oga-art-challenge
Oh, the 'themes' are on the Itch.io jam page. :) They're basically the themes and resulting art from some past OGA contests.
(On the Itch page:)
>> Themes from previous Art Challenges are:
>> Underground / PD Quick / Surt's Scraps / Share the Love / Science / Reborn
>> And the assets created for them can be found here: Art Challenge Collection
The 'themes' concept is really loose. Free associate things remotely related to the Art Challenge topics and you'll be good. :)
For instance, I'll just stick some of my baby sprites from the Reborn challenge, and add a 'Rebirth' plot element to my RPG's story, and that'll cover it. And for good measure, I'll stick in a cave level. Done-- two themes incorporated.
@Sparcsky -- Nope. :) Use everything you want from OGA-- and if you have rights to non-OGA art, you can throw that in, too. The challenge art is basically extra credit.
@Chasersgaming -- Heh. We're overwriting each other. :D
Oh wow, I've been so confused. "ART CHALLENGE" is the theme ugh. and yes I did only see the "Previous challenges" section, and not the "art categories" or whatever. I R A Stoop
Beginner game designer. Story writer. D&D nerd. Professional Slacker
@Xtheth -- Heh. Yeah... sorry about that. It could probably have been better worded. It's supposed to be super-open to interpretation so people have lots of flexibility to make basically whatever they want.
no, you can use any asset you like, long as you have the right permissions, but you must use a miniuim of 6 assets from OGA, 2 from each catagorie. the catagories are those in the browse tab. 2D art, 3D art, music, sound effects. the art challenge collection are assets that were created for the art challenge.

@ElizaWY, yes we are, hahha, i cant type quick enough!
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
Okay, for clarification, is the game theme will base on the previous Art Challenge? Am I right?
Underground / PD Quick / Surt's Scraps / Share the Love / Science / Reborn
yes, those are the themes.
there is no official theme for the game jam, you can make what you like. The 'themes' & 'art challenge' assets are just there to encourage people to use them, thats why the 'Bonus Voting criteria' was put in, but it's up to you if you use them you dont have to if you dont want to. if you choose to use a theme then you can use any of them, its your choice. :)

im off to bed now, its almost 3am here in the UK. any more questions on the jam I will answer when i pick them up tomorrow (in a few hours, haha).
try looking back up on this thread, your question may have already been answered.
Thanks.

So, I have a confession to make. This will be the first game I will be trying to complete that's outside of RPG Maker. I'm having a little issue I'm not sure how to solve.
I'm pre-downloading assets from OGA, and I can get the art stuff just fine, clicking the links and downloading like any other internet file.
However. I went to get music from the music section, and sound effects from that section, and I'm not quite sure how to download those from the site, also not sure where to find the credit info for them (They appear on my screen as just "play" buttons with sound waves behind them).
Beginner game designer. Story writer. D&D nerd. Professional Slacker
@Xtheth : in FireFox you can right-click on the link and select "Save Link As" from the menu that appears. I don't know about other web browsers though.
@Xtheth, downloading the music and sound is the same as downloading the art assets. what are you using? Mac. Windows?
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
if they were the same there would be a post with a download link at the bottom. These are definately not the same. These are just sound files with play buttons on them. I'm using MS Edge.
Edit: Through trial and error the answer is;
Click the name on top of the sound file looking thingy to get to the actual download place.
Beginner game designer. Story writer. D&D nerd. Professional Slacker
i dont know then im afraid, i have never worked with MS Edge. maybe attach a link to the asset here and maybe someone with a bit of knowledge on MS Edge may come long and help, perhaps the file format isnt suitable maybe, i dont really know. im sorry i cant be any more help. :)
Chasersgaming | Support | Monstropolis |
@Xtheth, can you post a screenshot of the webpage. And a link to the asset.
Per Xtheth's followup statement, I believe (s)he figured it out: The issue was not the browser so much. The audio assets were being seen in an asset list, not any individual submission pages. When clicking on the icon, the audio asset doesn't open the submission page as it does with graphical assets. Instead, it attempts to play the first sample file. By clicking on the asset title just above the icon instead of the icon itself, the page opens to the submission page itself which shows all the download links, licenses, descriptions, etc.
--Medicine Storm
We have had our first submission to the jam, however I have removed it as it was only an asset for sale.
just a note really, anything that appears on the jam that is not within the spirit of things i will remove. I got nothing against the art work that was placed, but considering the jam is about using already created assets i felt this was nothing more than someone looking to plug and sell there assets. if there are anyone creating assets for the jam then i would ask you to post and submit to OGA and not the jam itself please. It probably was not anyonr from OGA anyway, but still i thought i would mention it.

Hey guys-- what do you think about making another thread for showing off our game jam progress?
sounds good to me, i did ask for questions to be posted on the other post, but still got posted here, hahaha.
dont for get twitter #ogagamejam

:D I've started a thread, then.
Post your game progress pics / news / video things here! I'd love to see them!
I just saw this today, we have a competition that ends at 16th, so I might need to limit the time even more. Maybe 10 days? I am glad to see some programming activity on the site again..
this jam doesn't end until the 29th, so there will still be some time to create something after your comp ends on the 16th. :)

Great initiative guys!
I really wanted to join, I thought about make games using only OGA resources for a long time, I think it is the best way to promote OGA and attract more artists and developers.
Sadly I just saw this event now, it could be sent as news.
I would be anxiously waiting for the next Jam.
Seeing a lot of 2D entrants, hope my going with 3D was acceptable. I am lazy, and only have a character that moves, jumps, and glides. There is no way I'll be done with a 3D platformer in about nine days, plus I won't be online the 29th. Still going to do all that I can, but in might be no more than a tech demo.

2D,3D, 2 bit, whatever, anything is a go!, if you think you can do it, do it. don't worry if you guys don't finish, please still submit. be cool just to see what you all do with the assets you have chosen for your project, are your games inspired by the assets perhaps?
