Hi everyone, sorry if i got you excited about another jam, its not happening yet, i just want to know what everybodys thoughts are on running a 'theme' this year?
Im going to make a few changes this time round after reading all the feedback, duration, rules etc, and one of the things that im not sure about is running a theme. obvouisly most jams had one, and the last jam i kinda incorporated some sort of theme by including the art challenges as an optional theme (at the time i felt that having a theme may isolate some assets being used) , but maybe you guys and girls would actually want a theme set for the jam. so nows your chance to say, yes or keep it as it was like last year. how would you want to select a theme? should this be something you want.

Not theme related, but I really feel any OGA focused jam should have more of an "open art" element, and get the artists involved somehow.
Something along the lines of the TIGSource Assemblee (Part 1, Part 2) where there are two stages: the first stage for assest creation; the second stage for game creation using those (and preexisting) assets.
As far as theme goes I don't think it should be anything more than creating and using free and open game assets.

That's a good idea @surt, my feeling on this is that I just don't think there is enough participation on the "art challenges" themselves at the moment, which are currently an option in the jam, to think that it is worth adding something like that to it. However, teams can team up, artist and dev, and create art themselves for their game.(long as they are made available on OGA for download before the jam ends) to be considered as part of the 6 assets rule. Or even just create assets for the jam, based on the previous themes if they like, or maybe I could add it in with separate voting within the jam. Il have to think about it, I could do it, how would you suggest a voting criteria for just assets? :)

Hard for me to comment about when I have no idea what the "TIGSource Assemblee" is...
I couldn't understand it very much either, but I'm guessing creators on there create asset sets and then they are voted on by the community there to declare a winner, and then they go and make games using those sets. It's kind of similar to the art challenges, just there not part of the jam, just and optional addition to the jam. I'm just trying to think of a way to include asset creation to the jam, for those that might not want, or even make games but can still contribute to OGA and take part. But then they could do that by doing the art challenges can't they? I'm still open to suggestions.:)

I think for some, the natural flow of game creation, even when using pre-existing assets, encourages creators to make or modify assets anyway, to hit the aesthetic they're going for. I'm not sure how much, in the way of submissions that might have taken place after the last jam got posted but I know there were things I couldn't find and made myself. I even ended up submitting the tileset I made to fit the theme I wanted for my game. I think it's a good idea in some aspects, but imposing the rule of creating and distributing assets might be discouraging for some. I thought the idea was more or less for OGA to see a competitional use of it's vast library, content creator's to see their assets in action and to get a general idea of what content OGA might be lacking?. Just my 1.5 cents.
@VinnNo.0 yeah, you pretty much said what I kind of set the jam up for, to use what's here, and add what may be found needing, and at the same time the art challenges provide the theme type assets that can be used for for the jam if wanted. I think for now, we will keep it as it is, and if something comes up or is wanted by the community here to add or calibrate within the jam we can look into and discuss for the next jam.
id just like to say that if the jam I set up is not what the community here want, then of coarse you are free to create your own jam with something more tailored. (I don't mean that in a negative way) I do try and consider all of what's been said on the threads and I am always willing to experiment with ideas. :)

I definitely get the sentiment behind surt's suggestion, it would be great to get artists more directly involved in the Game Jam by some method.
The TIGSouce folks certianly have some up with an interesting solution to the problem.
For OGA, I think the most natural approach is to tie the OGA Art Challenges to the OGA Game Jams. Of course, this idea has been discussed at length in the past and I think chasersgaming hit the issue on the head, there just hasn't been enough participation to make a go of anything.
Maybe one way to do it would be to have an open themed art contest the month before the Game Jam and then award bonus points in the Game Jam for using assets from the art contest. That would give artists a way to be involved without requiring a lot of artist involvement for the Game Jam to be feasible.
If artist had older sbmissions they'd like to see used, maybe they could post a link to them in the Game Jam message thread and again Game Jam submissons could get extra points for making use of them. Could do a limit of two per artist or something.
While I agree with VimNo.0 that creating some new assets while making an entry for the Game Jam is more or less inevitable, I actually somewhat oppose the idea of devs and artists teaming up and producing new assets just for their Game Jam submission. I know that sounds bizarre, since devs and artists working together is the whole point of OGA, but my concern isn't with the idea of folks working together. Rather, I don't like the practical aspect that no matter how you slice it, the assets a team makes for the jam will not be available for everyone else to see and use until at least a few days into the jam. More likely, assets wouldn't be finished enough to be made public until near the end of the jam, making it difficult (if not impossible) for folks outside the team to make use of them, which just seems kind of unfair.
Although maybe that's the wrong way to look at it. Maybe anything that encourages more art to be contributed to OGA is better. In that light, maybe Game Jam submissions should be given bonus points for submitting new assets to OGA.
Just a note, I don't think any of this is something that needs to be addressed this summer, more something to mull over for the future.

Thinking out loud, maybe it's just giving Game Jam submissions bonus points for using assests from /any/ OGA Art Challenge in the past 12 months.
@capbros, you have given me something to think about now with regards to creating and releasing assets during the jam and thinking it's unfair. Hmmmmm.
i have got some things to mull over aswell, I think the voting criteria could have a role to play in this and how assets are used. It's quite a balancing act. I'm going to leave the jam set up as it is for now, which I will publish in the next 2 weeks, and keep listening to everyone's ideas here, so please keep the ideas coming. I will read them.
The art challenge is a good foundation to build upon and it's encouraging to see new participants recently. I would love tO see more, and it raises a couple of questions.

Speaking for myself, time is definitely the number one reason I've missed some of the art challenges, although I will add that I didn't even know the last one was going on because the sticky posts on OGA now appear so low on the home page that I have to scroll down considerably to see them. :(
I really wish there was some way to 'subscribe' or otherwise be notified whenever a new challenge was posted.
What about Twitter? I know that OGA has one, but hasn't been used for years, I did ask Bart ages ago about it but got no response. What about having a 'Static' top post for the forum thread, one that doesn't fall down the order once a new post has been posted, that way all will see it when there's a new art challenge? I agree with @capbros, the latest blog post is to low for it to be seen. Or the option to be notified of a new art challenge, I know you can be notified now, (by email) but that only seems to happen if you have actually posted on the thread itself. Mind you, with all the policy changes taken effect now I suspect all that would be an administrative nightmare now. :)

I'm more of an artist then a programmer that's why I usually don't do the game jams.
I can use a premade game engine that I've made in the past by me.
But I'm not sure if that's exceptable?
Plus not sure if I want to join the other web site, or why we have to? and why it can't be kept OGA in-house?

It's easier to submit games and vote on itch. It's also more manageable there.
Also, i liked surts idea with 2 parts. Maybe we could have two "groups". One group who create assets that are exclusive to the jam. The other group can use those assets in their games.

@AnthonyMyers generally game jams are about creating games from scratch, so pre-made game engines is not something that is usually exceptable. There are easier game engines around which are more easier than others, such as scratch or even RPG maker I think. You can use any game engine you want. I see your point about signing up to another website and not having it 'in house', but it's has to be done this way. having it in house means only the OGA community will see it (maybe), and won't attract others to OGA where potentially more developers/artists could use or contribute to OGA itself. So having it homed on one the biggest game jam platforms is essential for this reason. OGA isn't really set up to host games, nor was it designed too, to start having games uploaded would go against what OGA is about, game assets. I am not an administrator, so have no power with page set ups, maybe an admin could do it, but as I mentioned before, Bart does not want the OGA website to be a host for any games, only game assets. Plus the game jam has really no official affiliation with OGA.

@RedVoxel. I like Surts idea too, but ive been giving it some thought. To create assets exclusively for the jam i feel at the moment that it would limit or restrict other assets usage that are available on OGA. I would like the whole site and everyones contributions over the years to be considered by developers when creating their game, and not a selected 'Group' of assets. However that said, the 'Art Challenge' could be the answer to that 'Part'. As they are considered in the jam and have voting criteria for them, maybe one month the art challenge theme could be 'Game Jam' ;) Again i dont feel having another art contest would help, i personally think we should get behind the art challenge and build from there. just my thoughts. :)

I get your point more exposure for OGA from another site as for the other I can make a game from scratch just didn't know if I had to scratch build a complete setup and make assets to Boot.

I'm pretty sure using your own custom engine was explicitly allowed last year.
Well, I sure hope it was because I definitely used my own home brew engine for my entry!
In fact, I think the only restriction was that the game itself be made within the month of the challenge, but devs were otherwise free to use whatever tools they needed.
TBH, I can't see any point in restricting the tools people can use, or in trying to insist everything be done from scratch. I know some jams are designed around that idea, but the challenge here is to make good use of all the assets on OGA, not prove how amazing folks are at coding under time pressure.
Also, if Unity and GameMaker are allowed, there's no reason people's personal engines shouldn't be allowed. Trust me, if you're starting with my homebrew crapola, you're definitely starting at dis-advantage to anyone using those tools! :)

I have made an astar movement system in game maker8 in the past, that I was going to use with my new idea, but I wasn't sure if it was allowed. Seemed silly to do the same code over again for basic collusion and movment but it wasn't a deal breaker I would just use a different aprotch. Didn't know unity wasn't an issue ether thought that was frowned upon
is there any guide lines to follow?
lol the game engine was a typo got booted and forgot to add a line to my post I wish I had that level of Codding skill or better yet time and commitment. Skill always comes after hours of trial and error.

Re: "policy changes", I assume this is a reference to GDPR? No OGA policies have changed recently.
Personally, I think however people want to make the game is fine. I made my entry from scratch, but others used RPGMaker and other tools. I was fine with that, but I think the RPGMaker entries received a lower score than they could have gotten just because we've all seen it before. It's harder to make a game that stands out as unique the more you rely on tools that narrow the scope like that. I think that's fine, too. Tools like that have the advantage of saving a lot of effort, but they also come with drawbacks, and participants have to accept those when choosing their tools.
I really liked last year's requiring the inclusion of some existing OGA assets. I think it promotes the spirit of what this community stands for without hindering the creativity of the game jam participants. After all, if you don't find any assets on OGA that you could use in your game, you're still allowed to make your own assets, share them to OGA, and then use them in your game as an 'existing OGA asset'. It still encourages the sharing of assets. :)
I like the idea of a more open theme for the art challenge assets bonus. Either "bonus points for using assets from any of the narrow-themed art challenges" or "bonus points for using assets from one open-themed art challenge" as capbros suggests... (or both?).
Just one opinion, though. I can see how such an open-ended game jam may lack focus.
P.S. Looking into reviving the OGA social media accounts to help promote this sort of thing. (twitter, facebook, deviantart, etc.) No promises, though. :/

You can use ANY tool or engine/software you want or feel comfortable with and have the license/permissions to use it. be it RPG maker, Scratch, Godot, Java, html etc or even your very own engine if you want to, just as long as whatever you use it can be uploaded to itch jam page and played by all, and in keeping within the spirit of a gamejam, to code it/programme it during the jam time and not before. Storyboarding, editing, modify, locating, creating assets before the jam is perfectly fine. :)
Should you not be able to find assets on OGA for your needs, you can if you want, create your own for your game, but remember the rule. A Minuim of 6 assets from OGA is required for the jam. So i suggest that you make at least 6 of those assets you have created available on OGA before the jam ends to be considered for that 6 asset rule. Now, i know this could seem like a disadvantage to others, but the positive here is that more assets have been contributed to OGA, and they could be used next time or when ever the searching dev discovers them. The jam is an annual thing so there is nothing stopping anyone from creating within that year in prep for a jam. :)

Oh, I forgot to mention, that last year, I requested a 'credit' option on your title/start screen, some of you did, some of you didn't.this year it is a rule. I want and need to be able to check the assets are being used from OGA and I don't want to have to spend so much time searching for them. It should be easy, so others that want to use the assets can find them easily. It was a bit of a nightmare for me. Also though, I am going to write about every game that is submitted and dedicate a page to your game on my website and include those links aswell.I am not the best at writing, so it won't be nothing special, but it's something I would like to do and work on. It would be really helpful if this could happen. :)

Ok, putting my pixels where my mouth is, here's my first draft of a logo for this summer's OGA game jam.
Just an initial draft. Coloring needs work, and I plan to make the whole thing a label on jar modeled after the jar from ClintBellinger's recycling game assets.
Used CB's good neighbor's font for the OGA text. usr_share's victoria bold for SUMMER 2018 and two fonts from my own stash of legally licensed fonts for game and jam. Would love to have done all OGA assets, but there aren't too many large fonts up on OGA.
So, still some work to be done, but I'd thought I'd post what I had so far to see if there's any feed back on it.
Looks good. The colors match the website's theme and the (jam?) jar is a grand idea! Also: When is this all going down? Sorry if it was already mentioned.

If find them a bit dark overall. Great for grape jelly though. Still working out the coloring though. Those waves are just a first pass.

Ok, put some more work in. Here it is with a jar and as just a label.
Pretty happy with the text and label and all that. Shading on jar and the lid for the jar feel a touch week to me.

Ok, here's the final draft, at least until I get some other ideas for it.
I added a cloudy sky (from Dan Ryder's awesome cloud set) and some berry bushes behind Sara. I made the berry bushes by combining shrunken version of a bush from SuperMata's LPC Modified Art set and some berries from Bart's Berry Garden set. I also added a bit of grassy ground courtesy of the LPC Terrain Repack set (various artists).
I went ahead and packed it all up and make a proper submission out of it.

Hi! sorry about that was out and about the last two days and only just now had a chance to sit down and login into itch.io to take a look. Unfortunately, I'm getting a 404 when folling that link. :(
Without seeing the actual page, I can tell you, last year the jam page just used the two logos as repeating wall paper in the background. I'm not sure that will working as will with this year's design. I was thinking the logo near the top (either on the top left next to the title text, or top center above the title text) and then maybe use the checkerboard pattern (perhaps desatured a bit) as the tiling wallpaper for the page.
Well that was just my first pass idea, I don't recall if itch.io even supports anything other than the tiling wallpaper approach. if not, I'm sure that'll look fine too!
and yeah, hope the name change isn't too confusing to folks, something I've been meaning to do for a while now, pretty much since I saw that it could be done. :)
@withthelove, hmm, the link not working, thing is with itch jam pages you dont have the freedom of control like you do with your own game pages, its a background or banner, thats it, so tiled is really all you got. shame the link dont work for you to see, i dont want to publish it if its not OK. il take some screenshots instead and upload them so you can take a look, i do have a colage of all the games that were made from last years jam.

yeah, nothing quite works. Fiddling with a test jam in my own itch.io account, working up some assets to fit what itch allows. Will post them shortly. Sorry this has turned into an ordeal. :(
dont worry matey, its not an ordeal at all, the work youve done is great, its a shame the itch page doesnt give you the freedom with images, so it can mean a lot of jiggery pokery, but honestly, id go with banner 1, its the best of them i reckon, but obvouisly its your work and you want it to look the best it can, so i get if you want to fiddle. :) there is no pressure on you to work on it, so dont feel you have to. :)

ok, here's what I got after some fiddling....
first, I notice itch asks for a 'cover image' at 315x250. By some miracle, my logo is very, very close to that (315x261), so I just lopped 10 pixels off the top of the jar. It's not quite balanced right like this but it should work just fine all the same.
Second, after a bunch of twiddling in my own test game jam in itch.io, I came up with a solution that I think works ok. Attaching a snap of the itch theme setup.
first I took the checkerboard pattern, scaled it 2x and fiddled with contrast, saturation and brightness on it until I'd gotten it good and bleached out. I used this as the 'background' for the jam page. The idea was to get it to convey the same idea/feeling but not hurt my eyes when repeated all over the background of the page. Think it came out ok, although the color seems to have shifted slightly more blue than the patented OGA purple.
Second, after a bunch of trial and error, I hit on the idea of dropping the jam jar and checkerboard treatments from the logo. This made it fit better as a title for the page. It also made it simplier to look at and eliminated any conflict between the checkerboard in the logo and the checkboard pattern in the background.
Next, I scaled this logo by 2x with no interpolation just to get it to look a little bigger on the page. Honestly, it's almost a bit too big now. A scale of 1.5x or so probably would have worked better, but being as it's pixel art, there's no good way to do that without mangling the image. So I stuck to an even scaling factor.
Finally, I padded with the top of the new logo with about 50 pixels of empty space. This was just a really brute force way to get the logo to vertically center a bit better on the itch page. For some reason, itch puts the banner at the very top of the page and then puts a bunch of dead space between the bottom of the banner and the start of the page. Maybe for some banners that works fine, but for this one it looked really off, so I basically just added some dead space to the image to force it to center better.
Oh yeah, and I also changed the background and text color of the page to match the OGA 'white on purple' theme. An idea I got from last year's jam which did the same.
Final note, the background image options are:
Repeat: Repeat
Position: Align Center
And the banner image is set to:
Size: fixed width
the results looked good on my 1080p screen, hopefully they're not too awful when viewed at other resultions.
No worries about the extra work on my end, I fully realize it's my fault for being so nit-picky about things. thank you for being patient and even asking for my input to begin with. :)

Does white background + OGA-blue text work better than OGA-blue background + white text?
Do we want to have one more art challenge leading up to the Jam like Surt & Capbros/WithTheLove suggested?

Say whaaaaa? We can create assets/art ahead of time? I mean, it plainly states that it's totally fine but I just wanna verify that one.
yes, of coarse, the idea is to use all the assets available on OGA, which have been created for years, so you can prepare or even created assets for the jam if you want, the jam will run annually, so you could create stuff for next years jam if you want, as long as it is actually available on OGA. so if its on OGA, its good to go!
note though: should anyone create assets that are for the jam exclusively for your game, then you should upload the ones you want to release BEFORE the game jam ends, for it to be counted as part of the 6 asset rule, and that they are available for the rest of the community. Games that do not feature any assets from OGA will be removed, or disqualified or not counted. but im sure i didnt need to say that. :)

@chasersgaming: page looks great! Going white on purple was a great idea! With the checkerboard pattern back there, it kinda makes the whole page look like a jam label.
I don't know about you folks but all this purple talk has definitely got me dreaming of a Prince theme for next year's logo! :)
Gathering and working on assets beforehand seems somewhat like cheating but I'm not complaining. Getting different assets to look/work right together is definitely one of the challenges I ran into with last year's jam, so doing some of that work beforehand will definitely be a plus.
To be fair, I promise to post whatever work I do beforehand back to OGA at the start of the Jam so others can have access to them. If history holds, it'll probably be mostly be palette swapping and extra sprite poses. I'll either post the changes as comments to the original works, or if I end with a lot of stuff, I'll make a new submission out of it all.
Now that the page is up, should we get an announcement post up for the jam? Since folks can prep beforehand, it only seems fair to give them as much notice as possible.
@MedicineStorm: any chance of that super secret Jam announcement returning to the upper left of the home page (where I promise I didn't really see it before ;) Maybe I'm alone on this, but I definitely think Jam (and other) annoucements could pre-empt the 'Chat with Us' link for a while without huring anyone.
Hah! well, that sidebar announcement is templated to say "Art Challenge". I can certanly use it for a game jam announcement but it'll still say "Art Challenge: Game Jam or something".
Let me know what you want it to say. Something fairly short, and a link to the official Game Jam post?
Also, if we are having an art challenge just before the start of the game jam, should that go into the Art Challenge slot instead? I can link the two, but there's only a spot for one of them on the side bar.
--Medicine Storm@withthelove glad you approve of the white on purple. i appreciate that pre making assets could be cheating, but its not really, as most will maybe use pre-existing assets anyway that are already here, i would hope anyway. and if some choose to create and they release here then that can only be a good thing for OGA and its users. Youre right aswell, doing edits and modifications of other assets will most likely be needed to have the assets 'suit' well together, so having that time to do it could be essential. plus if it creates additions to an already existing asset, such as animation cycles, or new environments then that will be an added benefit to the original asset and its potential future users. I do think this will work out well, but the prove is in the pudding, so if it doesn't go as well as we liked, we can have a rethink and consider changing the set up of the jam for next year based on this years jam feedback.
I wont miss the 'chat with us' link, i dont actually use it, wouldn't it be better if OGA had a discord now? :)
