Based on discussion and feedback from the wildly successful OpenGameArt Summer 2018 Game Jam, I'm volunteering to host another OGA Game Jam.
Calling this one 'The Fall All-OGA Game Jam! 2018'
If I put together an itch.io page for it can someone add the top left sidebar and sticky forum links for it on OGA?
Also, does October work as a month for the Jam?
This one will be a slight change from the Summer Game Jams.
For the Fall All-OGA Game Jam, all art/sounds/etc used in an entry must either be already available on OGA or submitted to OGA within a week of the jam submission deadline (that's a week /after/ the submission deadline). Well something like that anyway. I'll try to word it better in the official rules, but the general idea is to use only OGA assets for the games, with the option to create new stuff as needed/desired so long as it's submitted back to OGA under an open license.
Anyone want to volunteer to make a logo/banner for the Jam?
I will!
what should it look like?
Can do. Just let me know when you're ready and what it should say including any images and links (and which forum topic to sticky... even if it's this one)
--Medicine Storm
Oop, let me add, they'll be a blanket exemption granted to the 'All-OGA' rule for studio and game logos.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
@Sping: It's fall and all, so I dunno, sara jumping into a pile of leaves. or maybe a play on this guy:
https://withthelove.itch.io/
@Sping: oh and thanks for volunteering!
https://withthelove.itch.io/
@MedicineStorm:
cool. Will get you the links as soon as they are available.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
no problem!
I think I will go with the Sara idea, even though I've never drawn her before.
@iwththelove what should the size of said logo be?
itch.io wants a 'cover image' that's 315x250.
We'll also need a banner for the top of the game jam page.
Looks like I went with '588x440' for that on my effort for the Summer 2018 Jam.
Pretty sure I just took the logo part of the cover image and scaled it by 2x or 3x.
For refernce, banner appears on top of the game jam's own web page. cover image appears whenever itch.io links to the jam page (ie. on itch's big list of jams page).
ps
bonus points if you use one of the existing OGA Sara sprites!
https://withthelove.itch.io/
oh, yeah so as an approach, I suggest you bang out the 'cover image' 315x250 first and we can scale or expand that as necessary to use as the banner image.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
why do you think one of the existing ones would be better?
oh not better, just thought it might be more in keeping with the 'All-OGA' theme of things. But approach it however you like, I'm sure whatever you come up with will be awesome! :)

What do you think of this?

My guess is the rules will be largely similar to the summer game jam, but with a stricter art requirement. Is that correct? In that case you got about 8 days to set this up so we can start preparing next month. :) And I think October is as good as it is going to get.
Can I join a team this time? I want to learn all of the skills of game dev and I need to work on my drawing. Plus, I could use the team experience. Does anyone want a 2D artist? (I drew the meteors in PREP-Hydro Jet in less than one day.)
I'll team up with you, Saliv. I'm a beginner artist but master programmer. (I have a full time job, so time is my biggest weakness.) Do you have a game idea in mind?
--Medicine Storm
I already have a game concept!
PREVENT THE SEAGULLS FROM STEALING YOUR FRIES
@withthelove are we allowed to prepare assets in advance?
I could also reverse it so you play the role of a seagull trying to steal fries from humans....
then I can call the game OH GULLY
@MedicineStorm I look forward to working with you. I do not plan to get started until the rules are up and we are given the go ahead. So no, I have no ideas on what kind of game to make just yet. I like characters so I would lean toward a mascot platformer or rpg like game, but I have never produced art at that scale before so I am open to suggestions.
@Spring That sound like a lot of fun.
I hope so!
I might make something with sara though.
> OH GULLY
Oh that's too good! You guys gotta use that one!
> What do you think of this?
It looks...Awesome!
Two quibbles...
1) The text is way to small to make an effective cover/banner.
Here's two ideas for fitting larger text in there. The previews are just for demonstation as the new text is just splotted over the old.
Anyway, that's just two examples to give you an idea of the size the text should be.
Between the two, I like the layout of the smaller text better, covers less of Sara. But I'll admit the larger text looked quite a bit better when I previewed it on the Jam's itch.io page.
Feel free to pick either or roll your own if you like.
Alternately, if you want to just post the Sara pick sans text, I can add the text at whatever size makes sense for the different banner/cover images that we'll need.
2) Unless you're super attached to it, I would drop the faded/repeating 'ALL-OGA GAME JAME' text in the backdrop. It's a neat idea but it kind of distracts from Sara.
ps
Should we port it to the Sega Master System Palette? jk ;)

I moved the red to the 'ALL-OGA' in order to emphasize that aspect of the title, since that's what's special about the jam.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
These are some fair points, and your text looks a lot better than mine, I will fully admit that working with text is very much my weak side. Here is a version without the text and the repeating background. I think it would look better if we pasted your text on top pf that ^^
I fiddled a little bit with the SMS palette, but I wouldn't say it works very well for this drawing, it was a good idea though.

@Spring: No worries, you're Sara drawing skills are way above mine! ;)
@all:
Ok, the jam page is live at:
https://itch.io/jam/fall-all-oga-game-jam-2018
Rules got pretty detailed, if the stictlers out there would care to review them and give me their feedback that would be great.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
It looks great, I read the rules through and nothing springs to mind as unreasonable to me. And I really like the leaf background you made!
@Spring: Thanks! Background was just a little something I GIMP'd up using your leaves so I'm glad you like it. :)
https://withthelove.itch.io/
@withthelove looking forward to this, i hope i can take part, the rules can get quite tricky and long cant they :), one of the things i was thinking about for the jam was actually opening up a community forum page, like F.A.Q or frequently asked questions which would lessen the summary jam page and be a bit more helpful, i didnt do this before coz i didnt want to have to many pages to answer questions and such, try to keep it in one place but could be more helpful maybe to participants. not saying you should, i just putting that idea out here as think i will do this next year. Im happy to help where i can, so give me a shout if you need. :)

@wiiththelove no problem!
this is gonna be great
Yeah, looks good!
I think rule 3 could benefit from simplification.
Take with a grain of salt. :)

> I like the credit examples, though it wasn't immediately clear there was 2 examples
yeah I see what you mean. I was trying to make it a more practicale example since most people will use more than one asset but I can see that that just made it longer and less clear. Dropped it back down to just a single example.
> What do you think about moving the "you must indicate modifications" line into the credits must include bullet points?
Yeah, I see what you mean, it almost fits there. Still, I think it reads better separate. It keeps the 'must inlcude' bullet points down to just what items you need to list under a each asset. Whereas 'modications were made' can simply stated more generally (as I do in the example). Also wording that as a 'must include' is a bit odd, eg 'must include a notice of whether modifications have been made or not'
> "3) You must credit the Author of the assets used, even if it's not required by the license, even if the asset is your own creation"
Yeah, I'd thought of that same phrasing, but it felt like I was cramming a real mouthful into one line, so I opted to split them up. That also gave a place to mention the rationale behind require credits for a creators own works.
> Derivatives: all OGA licenses permit derivatives
Good point, I updated it to use your text, thanks!
> I think it may be a good idea to let everyone know the OGA community is available and eager to help everyone with any questions they may have about licensing/derivatives/attribution.
Good call, I added a line pointing people to the OGA Faq and one pointing to the gerneral forums page.
thanks!
Thinking out loud, my understanding is that giving credit as described in the rules and my example, would be enough to satisfy the requirements of CC-BY, OGA-BY, CC-BY-SA, etc.
Does that seem right to everyone else? Part of the reason for going into such detail in the rules is to help people get it right (and hopefully see that giving 'proper' credit is not as hard as all that).
https://withthelove.itch.io/
Well, the GPL licences are a little different ...
@WithTheLove: good points
@Spring: True, but if the author requests the optional GPL attribution, the examples would satisfy it, yes? I generally use the one-line attribution format shown in the how-to-credit FAQ, but WithTheLove's examples may be more readable I think.
EDIT: I guess the optional part of GPL attribution doesn't matter since rule 3 is saying give credit even if not required. Nevermind. I think I misunderstood what Spring was referencing(?)
--Medicine Storm
@medicinestorm, no, you are absolutely right.
@withthelove
Guess that includes me...
All Fall Rules Questions:
Rule #1 "Game must be made from the start of the jam. Planning ahead is okay."
This is stricter than the summer jam. Was that the intent? In the summer jam we were allowed to get our assets ready in advance as long as we did not start programming (even on game engines). This strictly interpreted means I can not start making assets until the jam starts (though I can still do the concept art stuff). This has no affect on gathering assets, tools, etc. You just can not put them together or make any.
Also what about single picture assets (rpg enemies, profiles, some levels, gui, etc.)? If I draw out a nice concept and I like how it looks do I have to redraw it once the jam starts?
Rule #2 "... October 31, 2018 11:59 PM"
What time zone? Or do you mean exactly when the jam closes (Whenever that happens to be).
Rule #3 "A URL pointing to the asset on OpenGameArt.org"
In the case of a derivative asset: the original, the derivative, or both? License text may affect this.
Rule #4 "Logos, title screens and title music are exempted from Rule #2 and Rule #3."
Why is the title music exempt? Can I play the title music during the game? How many songs can I use for title music? (Trading card games teach horible things...)
Other Questions:
Those are my questions for now. Sorry, if I took too long.
> "Game must be made from the start of the jam. Planning ahead is okay."
This is stricter than the summer jam. Was that the intent?
Haha, that rule was actually copied verbatim from the Summer jam, so the intent was to copy the Summer Jam exactly!
I've added some text to clarify:
'Planning ahead is ok. Sketches, design documents, paper level designs, and other general 'Pre-Production' steps are allowed before October 1st. Searching for and collecting assets from OpenGameArt.org beforehand is also allowed. You may even work on expanding existing OGA art assets, or creating new ones as needed before October 1st. However, any coding, protoyping, gameplay testing etc. in advance is not allowed.
I've also added the following text under 'Rule #2'
If you do create new or derivative works, please share them back on OGA as quickly as feasible so as to be fair to other Jam participants.
> re: Timezones
Good catch! itch.io just says: 'In your local time'. For me that's CST, but I'm not sure if others will see their own local time or not?
Can someone in a different timezone check that for me? The Jam should be set to begin and end at 11:59 PM. If the that's the time folks in other timezones see see then it is indeed always just the individual user's local time. If you see some other time, then the time is in the hosts timezone (CST) and itch converts that to whatever that is in your local time.
I guess using the hosts timezone is the only thing that would make sense, since otherwise the submission deadline is kind of a moving target, but I don't know for sure how it works.
> In the case of a derivative asset: the original, the derivative, or both? License text may affect this.
Since the derivative must also be shared back to OGA (per terms of Jam), a credit for both makes sense to me. I have modified the text to read:
'When modifying existing art, please be sure to share your derivatives back on OpenGameArt.org and provide a complete credit (name, title, url, etc) for both the original work and your derivative work. Trivial derivatives (scaling, re-coloring, outlining) do not need to be shared back to OpenGameArt.org.'
> Why is the title music exempt? Can I play the title music during the game? How many songs can I use for title music? (Trading card games teach horible things...)
Well, just as a logo can uniquely identify a game or studio, so can a particular piece of music or sound effect. Think of logos that have a unique song or sound that play with them, like the old 20th century fox fanfare.
I have actually ammended the rule to read:
Logos, title screens and title music or sound effects related to a logo or game title are exempted from Rule #2 and Rule #3.
> re: windows
I have added a new rule:
6) Entries must be playable on a Windows 10 computer, either via a native executable (EXE file) or a web browser (HTML5, Unity Web plugin, etc). Builds for other platforms are welcome but not required. Entries requiring an account or sign-up for a third-party or other service(s) will be refused.
> re: teams
Teams are allowed, I think you nailed the process for how it would work. Given how itch.io works, I'm not sure there is another way to handle it.
> Those are my questions for now. Sorry, if I took too long.
no it was great, thanks very much, your feedback is much appreciated! :)
https://withthelove.itch.io/
@withthelove
Here is what I have:
I live in the eastern time zone. So it changes per user. Host's time zone, target audiences time zone, or GMT are all good ways of handleing it we just need to know when.
(This Jam just barely misses daylight savings time...)
I forgot about sounds/jingles on logos. That is an extremely valid exemption.
@saliv: Thanks! I've updated the date references in the rules to indicate Central Standard Time.
@all: I've added a strictly optional theme: 'Completing the Set'
Thought that sounded appropriate considering our discussion after the Summer jam.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
are you allowed to submit 2 entries?
hmm?
Sorry for the slow reply, things got hectic for me this weekend.
Anyway, yeah more than one entry is totally fine. As long as you think the quality's there and they meet the requirements of the jam (eg. made in October), you can submit as many games as you want.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
Ahh, good to know, I was thinking of doing both a collaborative entry, and one for just myself.
also, about the rule prohibiting political agendas, does that include the political agendas of fictional ingame factions, or only concrete real world ones?
heh! :) That seems like a question you've asked before. Why would there be a problem with fictional politics?
--Medicine Storm
Have I? Can't even remember that, damn I hope I'm not already getting old :P
I don't think there would be, just making sure due to the way the rules are worded.
@Spring-Enterprises:
> about the rule prohibiting political agendas, does that include the political agendas of fictional ingame factions, or only concrete real world ones?
fictional in-game politics/factions/agendas should be fine.
In general, using fictionalized characters or scenarios to explore political themes should be fine.
The rule is intended to cover obvious/crude propoganda or political messaging, and it's application is inherently a subjective 'I know it when I see' affair.
If you're concerned, you can PM a quick description of the story/scenario you were thinking of and I'll let you know if it's likely to be an issue.
https://withthelove.itch.io/
@all:
Ok, it's time, I've started an official forum thread for the jam, let's move discussion there.
https://opengameart.org/forumtopic/the-fall-all-oga-game-jam-2018-offici...
@medicine storm:
When you get a minute, can you add the sticky and sidebar links for the jam thread:
https://opengameart.org/forumtopic/the-fall-all-oga-game-jam-2018-offici...
and the jam page on itch:
https://itch.io/jam/fall-all-oga-game-jam-2018
Thanks!
https://withthelove.itch.io/
Done. Though the sidebar is designed for art challenges, so I don't think it would work well for showing the jam. it will say "Art Challenge" and link to art subission functions. Want me to try it anyway?
--Medicine Storm
@withthelove, I don't think there will be any problems with my fictional politics, just wanted to make sure.
MedicineStorm: awesome thanks! and yeah, let's give the side bar a try, if it's too weird we can always remove it.
Sticky post looks great btw! thanks for putting the picture up there!
