While browsing the web and stumbeling uppon yet another website with CC music i thought it might be a good idea to collect all those links to free media websites in some thread. So I'll just go on and paste all the nice websites i know of and hope others will do likewise. Maybe the realy good ones can be added to the links section.
[update] As pointed out on irc, there is already such a collection that can be found there http://freegamedev.net/wiki/Free_3D_and_2D_art_and_audio_resources [/update]
sounds:
http://www.freesound.org/ huge collection of sounds
music:
http://www.jamendo.com/ netlable
http://rec72.net/ netlable
http://8bc.org/ 8-bit bleepy music, as far as i can see it's all creative commons
2d:
http://www.morguefile.com/ not shure about the license though
3d:
http://matrep.parastudios.de/index.php open material repository
mixed:
http://media.ryzom.com/ ryzom asset repository
http://pcg.wikidot.com/ website about procedural content generation
freesound unfortunately still does not fit into this list, because of its current license choice.
(for the curious: http://forum.freegamedev.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=394 http://www.freesound.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6059 )
PS: PCG sounds mighty interesting
My favorite site to get textures for 3D assets: CGTEXTURES.com
It pretty much covers any texture base needs if what you are modeling is not something particularly unusual.
LFA: there's one problem with them though:
See http://www.cgtextures.com/content.php?action=faq
Here are some 2D resources I've found:
First Seed Material tiles
http://www.tekepon.net/fsm/modules/refmap/
This link leads to their main Download page, which shows their license. The license is not completely free; the graphics are free to use, but not to redistribute. There are a lot of city and environment maps (many are RPG Maker VX "auto tile" maps) and like 200 characters with the typical 12 poses each.
RPG Palace: Inquisitor's tile sets
http://rpg-palace.com/downloads/index.php?cmd=8&page=1
You have to look for them, but in amongst the numerous resources on RPG Palace, a guy called The Inquisitor has contributed several sets. On the site, the description just says they're free to use for any purpose, but if you look in the forums (and I've exchanged emails with him) he says he charges for any commercial use (~$500 USD to use all the tilesets; less for individual sets.) His tilesets are enormous and varied, so for a large project it might be worth it.
TomeTik: Roguelike tile sets
http://pousse.rapiere.free.fr/tome/
These are old-school tiles, originally created for roguelike games. They're flat and low-fi, but colorful and varied. Make sure you read the credits, there is one project that had a separate contributor. Everything else is free for any use.
It's worth reiterating that some of the resources listed here aren't suited for general use in open source games due to licensing restrictions on redistribution and commercial use. On the other hand, if you're an indie dev looking for resources to use in a game, some of these may be extremely useful (particularly the First Seed Materials, which don't prevent you from modifying them or selling the game).
OpenGameArt can't vouch for the legality of using any of these resources in any particular type of project, so please read their terms closely before deciding whether to include them in your game. What I can tell you is that if you use content that's released under a license that's not available here at OGA, there's a good chance that major linux distros such as Debian and Fedora will not include your project in their main distribution.
Pro tip: If you can't read Japanese, there's a small and non-obvious "English" button in the top right hand corner of the First Seed page. It took me a long time to notice it. :)
Peace,
Bart
>> http://www.morguefile.com/ not shure about the license though
yeah, no real license. Here's what I wrote on another discussion about it:
(bullets because indentation doesn't work)
Having trouble understanding. Google translation of license. |||| Google translation of the FAQ didn't clear things up.
I guess "This material, sold as a collection of material is strictly prohibited acts or equivalent." means that re-selling is illegal, which makes it non-free :|
>> http://8bc.org/
NC license
>> http://rec72.net/?page_id=2
NC license
>> http://rpg-palace.com/downloads/index.php?cmd=8&page=1
um...... can't find explicit license info. "Creditware" sounds funny :)
searching for icons today i found this site:
http://www.openclipart.org/
some nice icons there illl probably do some filtering and copy some of the more applicable ones over.
I mentioned this in IRC, but I think a wiki might be very helpful for organizing external links, how-to's, and etc. I'd love to see detailed instructions (and maybe even follow-along videos) from people who submit their art.
I know there are other wiki sites, but I'd really like to see OGA be more detailed with regards to licenses for external media.
I like the wiki idea, but we will need to have strong integration with our existing art content for there to be a point to it. Also, we'll have to make certain that people don't add things to it that aren't necessasrily appropriate for OGA. For instance, information about game projects should go in the Libre Game Wiki. The LGW does its job well (and I'm a fan of the site personally), so I'd prefer to work with them rather than step on their toes. :)
I would like to suggest using the fgd wiki it already contains a resource list for example (although I think it can use an overhaul. it's confusing now.)
NASA 3D Resources

Note: these items are not copyrighted (i.e., Public Domain) but you can't use the actual NASA logos any way you want.
Hello, I was just passing by and decided to share some of my findings.
http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/ - a LOT of music, all under CC BY-NC-SA 3.0
http://www.newgrounds.com/art/ - Art suitable for games are under Filters -> Developer resources
http://wiki.creativecommons.org/Content_Directories - A long list of Creative Commons content directories.
IMO there is a lot of free-to-use content on the web, the problem is to pick the quality stuff.
http://www.musopen.com/
PD classical music. The quality isn't exactly professional, but it makes up for it with the license and the amount of music there.

http://www.nosoapradio.us/ - over 200 songs, free for noncommercial and commercial games
Here are some sites, which all have files compatible with open/free licences (though some sites also mix them with non-free licences, so be careful).
Sounds:
http://soundbible.com/
http://free-loops.com/
http://simplythebest.net/ - has some public domain ones.
Graphics:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/
http://free3dstextures.com/
http://www.openfootage.net/
http://zooboingreview.blogspot.com/ - currently seems to be full of Ipad and Iphone wallpapers, as if for some reason those were the only devices that can have desktop images, but there are some texture packs on the site too.
http://www.imageafter.com - free including for commercial use, but doesn't appear to use a "standard" licence.
Deviant Art and Flickr also have some stuff on free licences, if you search.
http://www.nosoapradio.us/ says:
"FAQ:
Q: Can I sell a game that uses this music?
A: Yes, you can use it for commercial games, and sell your game.
Q: May I add these songs to my own 'free games music' resource or website?
A: No, you may not. You can post a link to this page however."
However no "real" license text is given. How problematic would it be to use them in a open source game?
All the propaganda pics from the IDF (lets not get into politics please) have been recently released under the CC-by:
https://twitter.com/#!/IDFSpokesperson/status/115769848629428227
http://www.idf.il/1283-11312-en/Dover.aspx
Might include some nice texture sources or at least good military reference.

is a great music site, everything is made by Kevin MacLeod and there are loads of different genres of music.
absolutely everything is under the CC-BY 3.0 license so as long as you attribute Kevin you can use his work as you like, he also takes donations and can write you specific music for something but that obviously costs you. I take loads of my music that I use from there and it's all brilliant
check it out

A pretty nice library of free sounds
http://rltiles.sourceforge.net
A big collection of PD licensed (they request attribution) tiles, items, and sprites for rogue-like games.
PS. Thanks's Scribe, Kevin MacLeod's music really is astounding!
http://www.jamendo.com/music
Editor's note: Not all of the music on Jamendo is freely licensed, but there's a lot there and it's easy to find. Just click on the "Advanced Search" link, and check the "commercial purposes" and check the two checkboxes underneath it. That should give you content that's CC-BY and CC-BY-SA.
