Hi again everyone!
So, my pony fangame idea has flubbed again (partly because the movie appended the MLP canon in such a way that I would have to redo my storyline from scratch), and I think it's time for me to start making something else.
I want to make an ancient-era, medieval or fantasy strategy game without any combat, kinda similar to Banished but with 2d retro graphics.
But since I have a track record of falied project after failed project, I want to hear you people about if you think this game idea can even be achieved by a single person in a reasonable amount of time (e.g. not more than a year or two) AND if you have any experience with producing games of this genre or any tips regarding the design. Perhaps you could even redirect me to some OGA assets that would be useful for such a game, and I would be grateful.
I tend to stumble over design and art quality problems the most often, with the programming and sound I usually am able to figure things out. I don't care about the game's popularity or income, but I really do care about having a quality and well thought out concept once in a while.
Hopefully this rambly post makes sense. If not, feel free to ask about anything!
But keep in mind, I'm not trying to recruit people. I'm merely looking for tips on how to plan and structure my own project. Of course if you're happening to be sitting with a similar idea to mine, we could maybe collaborate, but I would wish to do most of the work and in general I was not trying to make a recruitment thread.

its a bit hard to get feeling into the song with a mouse.
I dont know discord but i could try it. Tell me what and where.
I like your idea but i am afraid i have not so much time today i can only send you a bit of what i have.
Going offline now will be back in several hours...
Sorry about this late reply, turns out I didn't have as much time as I thought. :P
This is discord, it's a chatting system that everyone seems to use nowadays.

My discord tag is Kir#6354.
As for "getting feeling into the song with a mouse", I guess that's arguable but you are kinda right. Keyboard playing would probably be better for "feeling" like you said, but having control is also important imo, and there are ways to give notes entered with the mouse an acoustic feeling, I'm not an expert on how tho. It does make a lot of difference whether you want your music to sound acoustic or whether you don't mind it sounding "electronic" and "gamey", obviously, yeah I don't know.
if you'd like to send me what you have, feel free to!
Gah! My motivation with this game is slipping already...... this always happens :(
I will add you when i feel like doing the music stuff again.
Well since you are doing it just to pass time its no problem if you are not motivated right?
No I don't suffer any consequences or anyhting like that ^^ I just keep being disappointed in myself :/
Feel free to add me anytime, and sorry if I was too harsh towards your song, it's probably not as bad as I made it out to be (just not too fit for the purpose you wanted) sometimes it's just difficult for me to explain things and I have a feeling I might come off as too harsh for a lot of people.
you are disappointed because you are not motivated to have fun with making your game?
This sounds a bit like when someone says he is disappointed with himself because he does not like to play his favorite game right now. Which kinda sounds little strange...
Luckily i prevented you from writing something harsh to my song and you did only think it :)
I don't understand what you mean by "prevented", but that doesn't really matter
I get disappointed because I never manage to finish a game, I know this has only been in development for a little less than a month but knowing myself, I'm likely not gonna return to it, beacuse future me with improved programming skills is gonna find it too "bad" of a game to be worth it.
I can only tell you to look a bit earlier in the thread where i wrote:
I suggest you a different approach.
If you make the game just for fun and you dont need to finish it for any important reason like lets say make money, then you should just start and look how far you get.
And you wrote:
Yeah, that's what I usually just end up doing. But I never end up with a very high quality product, but as you say maybe that doesn't matter.
You did not aspire to make something great or finish it then. So i think you made what you aimed for: started to make a story, learned a bit programming and abandoned it then... To stay with something there needs to be more reason to stay with it than to go away and do something different.
plz do demo of chicken workers im still working hard on programming too it takes up lots of time.
Im trying to put in my marble mine system but know it gunna be 4hrs there abouts, not found that time yet but i will, i'm sure :).
im not a musician but kir developed my tune for my game love it, thanks so much
my best regards and hope you get demo out
im aiming feb to get my demo out, you got dead line?
I find in my game i have alot of spare time waiting for things to happen, to start off with!, so gunna introduce story line i think to fill time gap, think this will be done with interactive interfaces :)
My game mines stone now real time while playing too.

Here you go!
My youtube channel doesn't have much content though. It's always tough to decide whether a song should go on youtube or oga, and I tend to prioritize oga... Thanks for the appreciation still ^^
@Ninja Dog believes in Santa? no of course not, I'm not even christian.
@Rainbow Design
for some reason it says on my youtube channel that it doesn't have any content. But there is some, you just have to go to either the "videos" or "playlists" tab, if you're interested.
yeah found it :)
Now we're getting off subject again;
I took a good look around the site since I obviously have way too little to do, and I found that there are so many good assets in every genre imagineable that is feels kinda worthless for a mediocre artist like myself to contribute, seeing as pretty much everything has been covered in a better way - so it's like where do we go from here?
Do any of you feel the same way?
(Lol it's so obvious that I've got nothing to do) XP
And now a comparatively slow and small update to the chicken game, I've added a windmill and a sunflower farm. (I'm having a bit of trouble with the farmers' pathfinding)
I guess I will go outside or into the forest or something during the next couple of days to record some sfx, hopefully that'll cheer me up a little bit and help me get my motivation back.

@Ninja Dog, what about your realm, how's it coming along?

You know in Unity they have so many assets for $5 to make that. I once created a map creator that just had everything at 50 ( Sea Level ) and I randomly placed Volcanoes and Sinkholes ( Creates a circle and adds or subtracts the sea level for game maps like Conquest of the empire and Risk. Was really awesome and the sea level determine the color of the square to look like beaches and mountains.
Later I randomized the colors inside the square based on it and the surrounding squares. Looked awesome.
Playing around with a roguelike idea(RPG) i had this art work costs $10. Check out the movie animations, blood particles and a whole dungeon tile set with chibi's as the characters.
Here is rogue
This took about 4 hours to get set up with controllers, object pools, animation, breaking up tiles sets, etc.
this guy has some rpg assets that look pretty cool for free if you go through this link tilemap rpg I think he had about 200 tile squares ( grass, roads, traps, walls, etc. )
Ehhh, not sure what what you're saying has to do with anything?
