Btw, if you look into the archives you often will find the "source" files -- "LMMS" project files. You can use LMMS to open and edit them. This way you can modify the tracks to suit your needs. It is not hard to do since most of them are very simple.
I guess it depends on the game. Can not imagine playing Tetris with a story, and can not imagine playing a good RPG (like Baldur's Gate) without one. The story should not be pushed in your face, but gently provide context and purpose of your actions.

You will need STS-11, and DSK Overture for the "Empty City". I use STS-11 a lot.
