How about an indigogo/kickstarter campain for a specific set of texture/models for one of the many FOSS games out there (maybe a map-model/texture pack for Torque3D, Xonotic or Ufo:AI etc?).

If done well, it could probably get you a few hundred dollars (there is similar indigogo campaign right now that brought in about 550$ already).

You could sketch an idea of a very big pack and present it on indigogo/kickstarter and if the money comes in, you can finish it and release it.

Yes someting like that, however combining it with an actual popular game project might bring in more publicity.

Of course this would need to be discussed with developers of such a project first.
