A further extension of "yd's" winter theme.
http://opengameart.org/content/snow
I'm trying to complete the Lost Garden Circle graphics tile-set collection by making additions to go with each theme. A desert theme was made by Jetrel. Yd took Jetrel's desert and made the first snow covered mountain based on Jetrel's desert.
Now I'm working on making more additions for the winter tiles. I plan to fill this tileset like my other set, so it's still WIP.
I've completed the mountain landscape, here's the link to it.

I hope we use these graphics in this game project I'm helping to revive from it's 10 year grave. It's called "Dusk" and I would say it's similar to "The Mana World" because they are free, open-source, 2d Online MMORPG's in the style of the old-school 90's SNES, but Dusk is not as massive (much smaller) and was called a "Graphical MUD", coded in Java. I remember playing Dusk back in 2000 and 150+ people would be on the game when it was really busy but normally there would be at least 10-30 players. If your interested in this project check out the Dusk forums once a week for updates. The developer should have the server up soon for testing.

What is funny is this: there is project called "Dawn" which is a 2D RPG. It uses Lost Garden tileset too. Your MMORPG is "Dusk"... is it a coincidence? :)
Huh. My bro played Dusk quite a bit back in the day. I got on a bit myself. Neat to see that something's still being done with it.
@yd I didn't know about Dawn thanks for pointing that out. I'll keep an eye on it. I'm not sure if we will use Lost Garden tileset but I hope we do because it's the best free graphics IMO. The developer is focusing on modernizing the GUI and hopefully getting walking animation and map layers coded into the client.
@Redshrike I'm happy to hear that you know about Dusk. Your ice goblin rpg enemy sprite would be the perfect boss for this snow landscape :) All of your rpg enemies are perfect for Dusk. Keep up the good work! Let your bro know about this Dusk project.
@Zabin: Thanks! If you end up using some of those RPG enemy sprites (of which there are currently a nice number), I would be pretty happy. I'm also hoping to expand it in the future, and having them actually in use would help.
@Redshrike Your RPG enemies are the best ones I've found for Dusk on OGA. If you know of other static RPG enemies like yours made by others please let me know of them because I'm going to start a collection of art I want to use for Dusk. I hope in a couple months the developer will have the new Dusk version online and then we can start working on the game content, at that point we will be putting your sprites to good use! I'll let you know when Dusk is playable. I will start advertising the game when the client/server are up.
Why is the other Lost Garden stuff CC-BY, but this one is CC-BY-SA? Is it because it's derivative work?
http://opengameart.org/content/2d-lost-garden-zelda-style-tiles-resized-to-32x32-with-additions
I marked it under the same license yd used. Maybe it should be changed? If you look at yd's art piece http://opengameart.org/content/snow you'll see where the originals came from.
Original trees: http://opengameart.org/content/2d-circle-graphic-archive-treegif
Original Cliff: http://opengameart.org/content/2d-circle-graphic-desert-cliffs
The license on the original trees is CC-BY like you said but Jetrel's original cliff is marked CCO so I don't know maybe yd and Jetrel could explain the licensing because they made the originals.
I mixed CC0 and CC-BY art in the same submission therefore the common denominator was the CC-BY.
gotcha... So this should be CC-BY and not CC-BY-SA?
That is how I understand it.
Derivative works of CC-By can be licensed as CC-By-SA, however, it would be kind to use the original license.
I'm keeping the same linecse yd marked it as because I don't feel like I have to privledge to change it since 30% of the mountain was drawn by him also 60% of the trees. I changed the position of his tiles though.
BTW I just added cave enterence. I included my first try (left one). Doesn't look perfect yet, I plan to have a couple icesickles hanging from the enterence.
@Zabin: I have all the current RPG enemies in (or close enough to) this style organized in this collection: http://opengameart.org/content/side-on-pixel-art-rpg-enemy-sprites . They're mostly by me, but there are a few collaborations and a few by Blarumyrran. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do; it's been waaaaay too long since my Dusk days.
@Redshrike Thanks for making that collection. I'm looking foward to seeing the developer "Lou" implement the new features we've talked about. I wish I could help him with that but I have no programming knowledge so I'm working on my pixel skills instead. I know Dusk's scripting so once Lou has the game ready for content development I can help with mapping, scripting quests, ect.
I just made these new signs. I gotta admit it's pretty hard drawing it but I feel good when I look at it and think "it's pretty good". Edit: I forgot to mention I got the wood color(texture) from http://www.lostgarden.com/files/CircleTextures.zip
Finished the snowy gravel to transparency and drew a quick test map to see how it looks. I think it looks pretty good but I might give the edges another touch up.
They look awesome, Zabin. Great work.
@yd Thanks!
I polished up the snow gravel tiles and made snow gravel to gravel variations.
I put Redshrikes Ice Goblin in front of the enterence because I wanted to show what the Dusk game could look like ;D
Wow, wow, wow!!
Hi Zabin, thanks a LOT for this awesome work. :D
You made me won a lot of time, bringing this to the table.
Best regards,
Hello Bertram, I'm glad you like the new additions to the winter theme. I'm looking foward to seeing you use them :D and if I use them in Dusk I'll be sure to let you know.
Also just updated my snow to transparency.
Well done, guys. These additions look great. Am sad I can't use them. (have some 3rd party closed code) :(
looking forward to playing both valyria tear and dusk. :)
It reminds me of one of my favorite games.
