Legislation for new rules governing orphan works has been recommended. Person U (user) wants to obtain a license for a piece of art which was created by person C (creator), but U doesn't KNOW who C is. Previously, if U still used the art, C could later she U.
Under the recommended legislation, if U documents an extensive search to locate C, which may involve paying a third party to assist, and U files a notice with the US copyright office describing the search and use of the art, then they get a good faith pass for trying. Then if C later discovers the unlicensed use, they will be required to license the work to U for a reasonable amount.
Note IANAL, and this is my own short summary which may be totally off mark.
I figure general terms like "rpg" are likely to show up frequently, and search results come ordered by date. So I search for a general term and look when the top result was posted.
"rpg" - 24 Armor Icons - July 8, 2014 (also top result for "pixel")
I'm glad I'm not the only one! Good point about the music previews - the transition seems to have happened around February 2014. Searching can find art published out to July 2014, so I would expect a few songs with the new style icon, but like you report, mostly the old.
I wonder if the powers that be tweaked the database structure around that time, and never got around to updating the search function?
Lovely! One of my favorite games was Fire Emblem on GBA. Just seeing these tiles makes me feel nostalgic. Great work!
Here's an IP lawyer's take on it. http://www.workmadeforhire.net/the-rest/whats-this-orphan-works-business-about/
tl;dr

"gun" - sci-fi rotor fighter, June 29, 2014

Altogether, I haven't found anything more recent than July 10, 2014 with a search.

Holy smokes these are all fantastic!
I'm glad you like it - thanks for the hat and feather + inspiration!
I don't know if he is taking commissions or what his rates are, but I know Tim Jonsson has created high quality art like you're asking for.
