@mdwh - That Musescore soundfont list is pretty great, thanks for sharing!

I'd be careful before using some of it's plugins though. It mentions the Arachno SoundFont, but previously I had found on the documentation page for that soundfont, it explicitly states that:

But, please be aware that this bank is primarily distributed for private, non-commercial purposes only, as it uses portions from other authors

I don't know about the others, but I guess in general it's a good idea to look up licensing information for any plugins you use before using getting too invested in it.

I know that Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra is CC-SAMPLING+-1.0. DSK doesn't specifically mention a license (that I could find), but the website says it is 100% free for private and commercial work. GeneralUser has it's own custom license, but basically is CC0.

Rather - that is the consensus on CC-BY or CC-BY-SA. The tileset may alternatively be used under the terms of GPL 2.0 or GPL 3.0. These licenses require that you include a copy of the license text (to the best of my knowledge).

I can't think of a good reason why you would choose one of those licenses though.

I'd say that's the consensus.

I think if you edit the originals without referencing Sharm's, such that the end result is sufficiently unique it would only count as a derivative of Surt's original, which is CC0.

And like claudeb says, you don't have to follow ALL licenses. You may pick one.

I haven't been able to determine what Creative Commons means by Uniform Resource Identifier, but it may be that a link satisfies it. Whatever it is, CC says you may include it, instead of the full license text.

Wow, I'll be darned. I didn't think you had to include a copy of the license text for CC-BY-(SA). It is not clearly stated in the human-readable version. But your comment made me look up the full text, and sure enough, right in section 4-a:

You must include a copy of, or the Uniform Resource Identifier for, this License with every copy or phonorecord of the Work You distribute

Maybe this should also be noted in the updated FAQ (if that will ever actually go live).

I have used lmms to compose music. It comes with some built-in instruments, but I find that there are much higher quality ones available elsewhere for free. In particular, I have enjoyed GeneralUser GS, Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra (here is a more user-friendly file format), and DSK Music plugins.

There are two main file formats I deal with here for instruments: SF2 and VST. I find that lmms generally has more trouble with VST instruments, though I think it works better on Windows machines.

Good luck!

It looks like Tracy hasn't been on the site in a while. However, as a general rule, all art hosted on OpenGameArt is free to use, even in commercial projects. However there are nuances you should be familiar with.

On the left panel of the screen, you can see that Tracy chose to release this under the CC-BY 3.0 license. This means that you may use this artwork as long as you follow the terms: (1) You provide attribution (which you already say you will do), and (2) in your distribution, you don't apply additional measures that restrict others from using the art in ways permitted by the license.

Number (2) can be tricky if you release your game on a platform that imposes some DRM, or imposes its own restrictive license on your work. The Apple App store is an example of a platform which imposes a stricter license on all its content, and thus the prevailing view is that you cannot distribute CC-BY artwork over the Apple store, unless you are able to get a special exemption from the owner (Tracy).

Thanks everyone!

@peteris You may. On the left panel of the page you can see that I released this sprite under the CC0 license, which is effectively public domain. That means you may use it in any way, including commercially. Furthermore you are not required to mention me in your credits, though it is always appreciated to get a link to my OGA page somewhere in your project. And I'd love to see how you use it, so as your game progresses it would be super cool to see screenshots here!

Thanks! I'm glad to see people are getting use out of this!
