I'm not opposed to making it CC0, I honestly don't remember why it isn't. However, I will say that CC0 is not viral so no, just because the original is CC0 does not mean works based on/derived from need to be CC0.
I believe the point of this art set is to use Linear scaling and resize pixel perfect so that the same style can be used at any size.
Since the player would walk on top of the floor anyway you cand do what you're saying without removing the rope & posts :)
