@all:

Ok, it's time, I've started an official forum thread for the jam, let's move discussion there.

https://opengameart.org/forumtopic/the-fall-all-oga-game-jam-2018-offici...

@medicine storm:

When you get a minute, can you add the sticky and sidebar links for the jam thread:

https://opengameart.org/forumtopic/the-fall-all-oga-game-jam-2018-offici...

and the jam page on itch:

https://itch.io/jam/fall-all-oga-game-jam-2018

Thanks!

@Spring-Enterprises:

> about the rule prohibiting political agendas, does that include the political agendas of fictional ingame factions, or only concrete real world ones?

fictional in-game politics/factions/agendas should be fine.

In general, using fictionalized characters or scenarios to explore political themes should be fine.

The rule is intended to cover obvious/crude propoganda or political messaging, and it's application is inherently a subjective 'I know it when I see' affair.

If you're concerned, you can PM a quick description of the story/scenario you were thinking of and I'll let you know if it's likely to be an issue.

Sorry for the slow reply, things got hectic for me this weekend.

Anyway, yeah more than one entry is totally fine.  As long as you think the quality's there and they meet the requirements of the jam (eg. made in October), you can submit as many games as you want.

@saliv:  Thanks!  I've updated the date references in the rules to indicate Central Standard Time.

@all:  I've added a strictly optional theme: 'Completing the Set'

Thought that sounded appropriate considering our discussion after the Summer jam.

Just wanted to say this is awesome!   OGA's stated purpose is the provide high quality art work for free/open source projects, so it's really cool to see the site doing just that!

yeah, these look great!   thanks for sharing!

> "Game must be made from the start of the jam. Planning ahead is okay."
This is stricter than the summer jam. Was that the intent?

Haha, that rule was actually copied verbatim from the Summer jam, so the intent was to copy the Summer Jam exactly!

I've added some text to clarify:

'Planning ahead is ok.  Sketches, design documents, paper level designs, and other general 'Pre-Production' steps are allowed before October 1st.  Searching for and collecting assets from OpenGameArt.org beforehand is also allowed.  You may even work on expanding existing OGA art assets, or creating new ones as needed before October 1st.  However, any coding, protoyping, gameplay testing etc. in advance is not allowed.

I've also added the following text under 'Rule #2'

If you do create new or derivative works, please share them back on OGA as quickly as feasible so as to be fair to other Jam participants.

> re: Timezones

Good catch!   itch.io just says: 'In your local time'.  For me that's CST, but I'm not sure if others will see their own local time or not?

Can someone in a different timezone check that for me?   The Jam should be set to begin and end at 11:59 PM.  If the that's the time folks in other timezones see see then it is indeed always just the individual user's local time.  If you see some other time, then the time is in the hosts timezone (CST) and itch converts that to whatever that is in your local time.

I guess using the hosts timezone is the only thing that would make sense, since otherwise the submission deadline is kind of a moving target, but I don't know for sure how it works.

> In the case of a derivative asset: the original, the derivative, or both? License text may affect this.

Since the derivative must also be shared back to OGA (per terms of Jam), a credit for both makes sense to me.  I have modified the text to read:

'When modifying existing art, please be sure to share your derivatives back on OpenGameArt.org and provide a complete credit (name, title, url, etc) for both the original work and your derivative work.   Trivial derivatives (scaling, re-coloring, outlining) do not need to be shared back to OpenGameArt.org.'

> Why is the title music exempt? Can I play the title music during the game? How many songs can I use for title music? (Trading card games teach horible things...)

Well, just as a logo can uniquely identify a game or studio, so can a particular piece of music or sound effect.  Think of logos that have a unique song or sound that play with them, like the old 20th century fox fanfare.

I have actually ammended the rule to read:

Logos, title screens and title music or sound effects related to a logo or game title are exempted from Rule #2 and Rule #3.

> re: windows

I have added a new rule:

6) Entries must be playable on a Windows 10 computer, either via a native executable (EXE file) or a web browser (HTML5, Unity Web plugin, etc).   Builds for other platforms are welcome but not required.  Entries requiring an account or sign-up for a third-party or other service(s) will be refused.

> re: teams

Teams are allowed, I think you nailed the process for how it would work.  Given how itch.io works, I'm not sure there is another way to handle it.

> Those are my questions for now. Sorry, if I took too long.

no it was great, thanks very much, your feedback is much appreciated!  :)

> I think web playable only should be allowed

lol, I mis-read this at first to be 'only web playable should be allowed' to which I was like 'what the?'

But yeah, I don't see a reason to refuse HTML5, or Unity web games etc. games.

I do think the Roblox entry was asking a bit much, so maybe 'game cannot require login to 3rd party services' or whatever.  But I think that one kind of took care of itself.

I just flipped through a few other jams on itch and none of them said anything about required platform.  Maybe it's just assumed to be Windows or it's self-policing as Medicinestorm suggests.

> I like the credit examples, though it wasn't immediately clear there was 2 examples

yeah I see what you mean.  I was trying to make it a more practicale example since most people will use more than one asset but I can see that that just made it longer and less clear.  Dropped it back down to just a single example.

> What do you think about moving the "you must indicate modifications" line into the credits must include bullet points?

Yeah, I see what you mean, it almost fits there.  Still, I think it reads better separate.  It keeps the 'must inlcude' bullet points down to just what items you need to list under a each asset.  Whereas 'modications were made' can simply stated more generally (as I do in the example).  Also wording that as a 'must include' is a bit odd, eg 'must include a notice of whether modifications have been made or not'

> "3) You must credit the Author of the assets used, even if it's not required by the license, even if the asset is your own creation"

Yeah, I'd thought of that same phrasing, but it felt like I was cramming a real mouthful into one line, so I opted to split them up.  That also gave a place to mention the rationale behind require credits for a creators own works.

> Derivatives: all OGA licenses permit derivatives

Good point, I updated it to use your text, thanks!

> I think it may be a good idea to let everyone know the OGA community is available and eager to help everyone with any questions they may have about licensing/derivatives/attribution.

Good call, I added a line pointing people to the OGA Faq and one pointing to the gerneral forums page.

thanks!

Thinking out loud, my understanding is that giving credit as described in the rules and my example, would be enough to satisfy the requirements of CC-BY, OGA-BY, CC-BY-SA, etc.

Does that seem right to everyone else?   Part of the reason for going into such detail in the rules is to help people get it right (and hopefully see that giving 'proper' credit is not as hard as all that).

@Spring: Thanks!  Background was just a little something I GIMP'd up using your leaves so I'm glad you like it.  :)
