I wouldn't have imagined that Steam with its DRM would be very copy-left compatible, but I know the GPL engined Steel Storm is on there for one and all the old DOS games running in the GPL DOSBox, so I guess that's optional.

If you are copying something then it is a copy and so subject to copyright.
Use these things as references. Take cues and elements from them and create something new.
If you are editing, tracing, downscaling then it will always be a derivative work.
Commercial is not the opposite of copyleft.
This is the usual way.
