General Discussion

Discuss anything that relates to art and free/open source game development here.

I have developed a tower defense game engine for android and am looking for art

I have created a tower defense application I am going to name EpirisTD, I have used a lot of art from this website and am thrilled at how much it has helped me.

I seem to be a bit stuck however at this point, I myself am a full-time developer and now that I am at the point of just graphics work and balancing the game I have really become demotivated because I can spend hours just trying to think about how a menu should look.

Favorite types of character to play as

Hi all,

Was just wondering and thought it might be useful for others too, to know what everyones favourite type of character is.

I'm talking mainly about what type of character you like to play as, what species if not human do you normally choose to play as Dwarf, Elf etc or something completely different that you would love to see in games and be able to play as.

What characteristics you like your character to have, funny, determined (kind of based on how you actually make the character play but the written storyline parts might show determination)

Does anybody know the homepage of hale ?

hi all,

Sometime back I had downloaded a game called hale. I am/was trying to download it but have been unable to get more info. about it now, cannot find the website from where it was downloaded.

This is what is in the contributors txt and there is nothing about the project in the directories about the game (sadly)

~/games/hale$ cat CONTRIBUTORS.txt
Thanks to the many artists working on the Battle for Wesnoth project, much of the art used here is derived from that project.

Making music with open source tools

So sorts of software packages do you guys use to make music ? I have been looking around for some software that will supports reading from a MIDI device, and my preference of course would be something open source. So far I've been pretty disappointed with the non-commercial software I've been finding. But maybe my google-fu is just failling me.

Also, what about licensing for sound fonts? Are there free ones available? I am using SGM-V2.01.sf2 but I found no licensing information on it.

Please help choose which Tux looks better

I've been brewing a tech demo game for my 2D game engine for more than a year, now.

One of the target was to use other FOSS' mascots -- like what Wormux (now WarMUX) did.  The famous of which is obviously, none other than, Tux.

I stylized Tux to fit the art style used in my engine's mascot.  With comments from my friend we ended up having two designs.

I'd like to ask which Tux to use in our game, Smack.

OGA's stance on a senario?

Imagine this senario:

The license requires attribution, and that remixes be shared.

Setting - the mood

So we know all of the tropes, I'm sure... dungeons, castles, caves, ice levels, fire/lava levels...

But what kinds of settings really get you engaged in a game? Are there any you especially enjoy, like Water Temples? lol Any really good game settings that you think are horribly underutilized, or ones that have already been dragged out and are stale?

3 things to prevent license issues

1. Read the licenses carefully

Don't use for example textures from cgtextures. They are quite good, but they don't can be released under any opensource license.

2. Don't use resources, which may not be in all countries allowed under this license

I had the issue with picture from old books, which I used as source for icons. The copyright doesn't expire in all countries, so I had to remove them.

3. Do it at your own

Promoting OGA

I found OGA a few months back and I've been a huge fan of the resources and community that you have all built. For the last eight months I've been designing an MMORTS and have made a good amount of progress. We have a blog that's up and I'd like to promote OGA on our blog as an Affiliate, and provide maybe a brief description of OGA and a link back to this site.

kurtisevan is under construction

Hey everyone,

I won't be around for the next two months.  This will put the weekly challenges on hold, but if anyone is interested in filling in for me then let Bart know.

My wife and I have a great opportunity to upgrade our mobile home.  The newer one needs some remodeling and painting done.  This means I won't have any spare time for awhile.  After we get settled in our new home, I will return. :)  Until then...
