Had a go.

Didn't want to completely eradicate the gradientness as I think the dithery gradients are an important quality of the UFO art, but maybe left it still a bit too strong.

Note: I removed spacing between tiles as that makes it painful to work with, so it probably won't import straight back in.

Can consider it CC0.

Exporting an image with the "ufo-battle" palette results in the same palette as your "U_EXT01.bmp" so is that the correct palette then? Your "Battlescape.Png" looks more like the UFOpaedia palette.

My Steam copy doesn't have "U_EXT01.PCK".

Indexed means a palette-based image. Each pixel in the image stores an index into the palette.

The palette image isn't indexed.

The tilesheet is indexed but has a different palette.

Would you be able to provided an indexed image of the desired palette.

When quantising GraphicsGale strips out repeating colours and Pro Motion completely rearranges the palette.

You seem to be suffering a fundamental misapprehension.

An isometric projection is only visual representation of your game world.

It should have no effect whatsoever on the physical representation.

Collision response in an isometric projection viewed game shouldn't be any different than that in gameplay-equivalent games using any other projection.

Not theme related, but I really feel any OGA focused jam should have more of an "open art" element, and get the artists involved somehow.

Something along the lines of the TIGSource Assemblee (Part 1, Part 2) where there are two stages: the first stage for assest creation; the second stage for game creation using those (and preexisting) assets.

As far as theme goes I don't think it should be anything more than creating and using free and open game assets.

I don't have any experience with cutout animation, but freeness-wise I'm aware of the deicated tool DragonBones and the COA Tools addon for Blender.

Then you don't want isometric, you want trimetric.
