Actually... I might be wrong.  I don't think I am, but--I have been assuming the credit on CC-By is 'viral' (that is, all subsequent derivatives must be credited) but I'll need to discuss it a bit on the IRC to be sure.

Oh, sorry, one other quick note: your attribution instructions do need to include Daniel Seigmund, as specified in his upload.  I'm not mentioned in his attribution instructions, but since it's an official commission based on another official commission I don't see that as an issue.

I gotta say, it's really neat to see a third-generation iteration of those wall tiles.  I like what you've done, and I also appreciate anyone expanding an existing tileset.

See, the thing is, what he did there wasn't mere jerkishness.  It was an outright violation of the licensing of the asset (that is, illegal).  It is up to the artist (or their authorized representatives) to pursue legal action, but if the stolen assets are being hosted on a venue like that generally the admins of the hosting will take care of it if proof is provided.

Re: modifications.  If it's freely licensed, making changes to an asset shouldn't be a problem.  If it's not freely licensed, I'd make sure it's fine with the artist first.  Best to have  very clear communication on those things if you don't have the license to clearly define what's allowed (heck, even if it's licensed it's nice to ask even though it's not mandatory).

(edit: yeah, Duion beat me to it.)

They can't exactly stamp their name over it, in that they have to continue crediting the original author no matter what.

You absolutely may.  As long as you give attribution as specified  you can do whatever you please with these tiles.  I would appreciate it if you released aany modifications you do under the same license, but this is not required by the license.

That said, I have been planning to update these tiles in the furutre, and I've already done some work on the tree.  I dont know when that will be done, though.

Note: I have added it to the minimal platformer collection because I think some of the backgrounds qualify.  If someone objects I can remove it.

I can understand wanting to have all-original art for your game, but I think you'll definitely find it harder to get free help if that's the reason you're not using what's already here.  OGA specializes in art that is meant to be common and reusable--if you're after something that's not "overused" as it were just for the sake of newness you're probably going to need to either pay someone or get an artist on board some other way.  It would kind of defeat the purpose of the site to make a whole set of brand new assets for every single project that needs something.

When it comes to new content, I think people are more likely to be willing to expand existing stuff than create something totally new.  So say, if there is a character who would fit but lacks the animation you need or a tileset that needs some more tiles I think there's a decent chance that someone would help.

(Thanks for the link to the RPG project, cemkalyoncu!)

These collections might also be of interest:

http://opengameart.org/content/platformersidescroller-characters-and-ene... a definitive collection of the rpg characters/enemies on OGA.  This guy in particular might match what you're after character-wise : http://opengameart.org/content/2d-small-platformer-character

http://opengameart.org/content/platformersidescroller-tiles a collection of all the platformer tiles.

If what you're after isn't there, that's fine, but it's important that you be aware of what's out there and ready to explain why what's available doesn't work, and what you need that's different.

Great work, man!  I really like the simplicity, and I imagine they will be very useful.

How large are the contents of the .zip?  If possible, it's usually handy to have .pngs or such available as well, since it cuts out an extra step and lets people easily see everything that's available.
