I'm proposing an idea to make some games to improve my skills. Basically how it works, is that the OGA community creates a comment in this post containing some assets from OpenGameArt, and I have to create a game using only those assets. There should be a decent amount of assets, not just two. The goal is to create something working with those assets, before moving on to the next comment. I'll probably put the finished products no itch.io and put the source on opengameart or github.
Ok, so... sorry for the weird title... wasn't sure how to word it. But, I have noticed that there are a lot of submissions on this site that have a set of sprites repeated multiple times with various recolorings.
I have come up with a method for formatting sprites that allows for fairly easy recolorations... but it requires a non-standard Artist work flow.
The process is as follows:
Create a 32bitperpixel image (8bitperchannel +alpha)
Create a greyscale image at the same side describing the first recoloration layer.
I am not an artist... I use OpenGameArt to find assets to use in projects. It is fantastic, I appreciate all the work everyone puts into creating this gigantic collection of assets.
Wouldn't it be nice to have a "Universal Texture Atlas" format? Like, a general purpose JsonFile that describes the content of a given texture?
Over the last few months or so, I have noticced that OGA is becoming slow to respond to link clicks and uploads.
I have cleared my cahche on more than one occassion and other things and yet it still appears slow. Where talking up 10-15 seconds to load a page, well this is what im experiencing. I do not seem to have any problems loading other websites.
This will be an 'all-OGA' jam similar to last year's Fall game jam, so all art/music/sound must come from or be made available on OGA by the end of the jam, with an exception for logo, title and musical theme related art.
Thinks about commisioning open source art for my game I came up with the idea for a Youtube channal that posts videos of artist creating open source art.
The rules would be you must release the thing your working on at at least the stage in was at the end of the video, your allowed to continue to work on it is your embassist of the state it's in and save that footage for a future video.
It would pay $20USD a month for an hour of video and you must do at least an hour of work on an approved project.
I want to make, in the future, a survival/exploration/open world game. But i know that i have to start with something small, but i would like to know a good programming language to do this. But FIRST, i want to know: Can i make a game like this from zero? No engines, just coding. Can i do this? Or i need a engine?
