Those spells look awesome melior, but i'd really love some sort of a Wind spell (I'm using the 4 basic elements, plus several extras like ice and thunder, so the animation would be welcome)

I'm sure some of these might need another nudge from another person or two to get them posted, but I'm doing my best with the authors I know to get the word out.
Actually, I've used LWJGL for only 2d stuff, PokeNet was one such game, and if you google for "LWJGL" (Or look at their website), you'll see that most games are 2D Shmups.
As for jMonkey, a friend of mine is working on a 2.5d game that uses 2d sprites on a 3d map, so it is possible to use Sprites, but as you said, it's "shoehorned" :P

The Slash looks nice, but I think that a *stab* would be a better animation for a dagger. :)
To the OP: I'd be glad to help you set up and answer any doubts regarding Applet deployment on IRC (Ping Nushio)

In the meantime, I leave you with the official "Java Deployment Advice"

Just in case anyone else has the issues Shirish is having... you can replace any "imgur" url with "filmot", for instance,
http://i.imgur.com/UPXm3.png
Is the exact same thing as
http://i.filmot.com/UPXm3.png
It's a mirror site. Might get past firewalls or other sorts of nasty dns-level blockades.
I found this GreaseMonkey Userscript that might help: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/102139 (thats where I Learned about filmot).
BartK just wants to keep us in suspense :P
The slash looks awesome! Can I ask for a stab? :P

Btw, the Linux Outlaws made a mention in their episode 261 http://sixgun.org/linuxoutlaws/261.
That's pretty much agreed and done. This contest is about making Libre games using Libre frameworks. :-)
